BORMANN BRS2000 Pro Reciprocating Saw

Properties of the tool

The reciprocating saw is an electric tool designed for cutting of woodens urfaces and surfaces made of wood and those made of wood derivatives, polyethylene and metals, using adequate blades. Thanks to easy replacement of blades which does not require additional tools, the saw offers a wide range of applications in building tasks. A correct, reliable and safe operation of the tool depends on its correct use, so:
Read the operating manual thoroughly before work and keep it for future reference.
The supplier shall not be held responsible for any damage occurred as a result of failure to observe safety regulations and indica tions containedin this manual. Using the tool for purposes it has not been designed for will make the guarantee void and cancel any rights implied by a breach of contract.

General safety conditions

NOTE! Get acquainted with all the instructions below. Failure to observe them may lead to an electric shock, fire or injuries. The notion of electric tool used in the instructions applies to all the tools which are powered with electric current, both wire tools and wireless ones.
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS!

Place of work

The place of work must be properly illuminated and clean. Disorder and poor illumination may be a cause of accidents.
Do not work with electric tools in explosive environments, or those which contain inflammable liquids, gases or vapours. Electric tools generate sparks, which may cause a fire in case of contact with inflammable gases or vapours.
Do not allow children and outsiders to the place of work. A lack of concentration may result in a loss of control over the tool.

Electric safety
The plug of the power supply cable must fit the mains socket. Do not modify the plug. Do not use any adapters in order to adapt the plug to the socket. An unmodified plug which fits the socket reduces the risk of an electric shock.
Avoid contact with grounded surfaces, such as pipes, heaters and refrigerators. Grounding of the body increases the risk of an electric shock.
Do not expose electric tools to precipitation or humidity. Water and humidity which gets into the electric tool increases the risk of an electric shock.
Do not overload the power supply cable. Do not use the power supply cable in order to carry the tool or to connect and
disconnect the plug from the mains socket. Avoid contact of the power supply cable with heat, oils, sharp tools and moving elements. Damage to the power supply cable increases the risk of an electric shock.
In case work is realised outside closed areas, it is necessary to use extension cords designed for applications outside closed areas. Using a correct extension cord permits to reduce the risk of an electric shock.
If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RDC) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety
Commence work in good physical and psychological conditions. Pay attention to what you do. Do not work if you are tired or under effects of medicines or alcohol. Even a moment’s inattention during work may lead to serious injuries.
Always use individual means of protection. Always wear goggles. Using individual means of protection, such as dustmasks, protective shoes, helmets and hearing protections permits to reduce the risk of serious injuries.
Avoid accidental activation of the tool. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position, before you connect the tool to the mains.
Holding the tool with a finger on the switch or connecting an electric tool when the switch is in the ON position may lead to serious injuries.
Before you turn an electric tool on remove all the spanners and other tools, which have been used for adjustments. A spanner left on rotating elements of the tool may lead to serious injuries.
Keep your balance. Maintain an appropriate position. It will permit to control the electric tool in case of unpredicted situations during its operation.
Use protective clothes. Do not wear loose clothes or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothes and gloves away from moving elements of the electric tool. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair may get caught on moving elements of the tool.
Use dust extractors or dust containers, if the tool is equipped with any. Make sure they are properly connected. Using of dust extractors permits to reduce the risk of serious injuries.

Operation of the electric tool
Do not overload the electric tool. Use a proper tool for the given purpose. A correct selection of the tool for the given work will result in a more efficient and safer work.
Do not use the electric tool if the switch is not functioning properly. A tool which may not be controlled by means of a switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Disconnect the plug from the mains socket before any adjustment, replacement of accessories or storage of the tool. It will
permit to avoid accidental activation of the electric tool.
Store the tool away from children. Do not allow untrained persons to operate the tool. An electric tool may be dangerous in hands of an untrained person.
Make sure the tool is properly maintained. Check the tool in order to detects any unfitting or loose moving elements. Check whether the elements of the tool are not damaged. In case any damaged elements of the tool are detected, they must be repaired before the electric tool is operated. Many accidents are caused by improper maintenance of tools.
Cutting tools must be sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools are easier to control during work.
Use electric tools and accessories in accordance with the aforementioned instructions. Use the tool in accordance with its purpose, taking into account the kind and conditions of work. Should the tool be used for other applications than the ones it has been designed for, the risk of a dangerous situation increases.

Repairs
The tool may be repaired only by authorised service centres, which must use solely original spare parts. It will guarantee a proper level of safety of operation of the electric tool.

Additional safety guidelines
During work, where the inserted tool may touch a hidden live conductor, hold the electric tool by the insulated handles. Any contact with ,live conducts” may also cause the metal parts of the tool to be live, which might cause electric shock to the operator.
During work wear dust masks. Inhalation of the dust generated during work may be harmful. If the tool is equipped with an extractor to remove the dust generated during work, it must be installed and used in accordance with the manual.

Installation of the equipment

ATTENTION! The equipment may be installed only if the power supply if off. Remove the plug of the cable the tool from the mains socket.
The saw is supplied complete. Once the package has been opened, make sure all the elements have been supplied.

Preparation for work
Attention! All activities related to installation and replacement of the blade, adjustments and maintenance of the electric tool must be realised when the tool is not powered, so before such tasks: Remove the plug of the cord of the saw from the mains socket!

Installation and replacement of the blade
Make sure the installed blade is not damaged or broken, and the cutting teeth are not broken, etc. In case any damage is detected, it is required to replace the blade with a new one.
The saw is supplied along with two blades. The blade for wood and wood derivatives has wider spaced teeth, and the blade for metal and plastics has smaller teeth. Select an adequate blade for the planned work. The blade must be installed with the teeth directed towards the lower part of the housing.

Attention! Installation of the blade must be realised wearing protective gloves, which will reduce the risk of injuries.
Turn the clamp of the spindle and insert the fixture of the blade into the slot of the spindle. Turn the clamp in the opposite direction and make sure the blade has been installed properly: the clamp has returned to the original position and the blade cannot be removed from the spindle.

Adjustments of the height and the angle of the foot
By means of adjustments of the height of the foot, the cutting height may be set. In order to do so, press the button located in the front part of the body, indicated with an open padlock symbo, ladjust the foot to the required height and then press the button indicated with a closed padlock symbol. Make sure the foot will not change the height during operation. Adjustments of the foot may be gradual. The foot permits continuous adjustments of the angle of the skid, and to do so, it should be inclined in relations to the foot guide. This permits to adjust the cutting angle, without lifting the foot from the surface of the material being cut.

Adjustments of the oscillation of the blade
The saw permits gradual adjustments of the oscillation of the blade. Adjustments are realised with a lever. The lower the setting, the lower oscillation of the blade. In case of adjustment ,,O”, the oscillation of the blade is off.
The oscillation of the blade facilitates cutting, and its grade must be selected experimentally, for example cutting waste material. However, the operator should follow the indications below:

  • in order to obtain a smooth kerf, it is recommended to set the lowest possible oscillation or even turn it off,
  • cutting thin materials (e.g. sheet metal plate), the oscillation should be turned off,
  • cutting hard materials (e.g. steel), low oscillation should be selected,
  • cutting soft materials, the maximum oscillation should be selected.

Adjustments of the velocity of the blade

The saw is equipped with a potentiometer, which permits adjustments of the velocity of the blade. Turning the ring of the poten tiometer, it is possible to select an adequate velocity of the blade for the given task. The lower the setting, the lower the velocity of the blade.
The velocity must be selected experimentalyl, for example cutting waste material. Lower velocity should be used while cutting plastics or aluminium. The velocity must be reduced also in case the blade is seized during cutting.

Using the tool

Before work make sure the protection of the blade is installed correctly and lowered. Wear eye and hearing protection, as well as protective gloves. Fix the object to be cut to the work station, using clamps or an anvil, etc. Do not ever keep the material being cut in your hands or other parts of the body. In case of cutting, support the material at its edges and close to the cutting line. Place the supports at both sides of the cutting line, so that during cutting the blade is not seized in the kerf. During cutting the base must be placed with the whole surface against the material being cut. Connect the dust extraction system to the connection point.

Turning the reciprocating saw on and off

Make sure the surface at the place of work is even, stable and free from dirt. Adopt a secure and stable position.
Hold the tool by the handle. Do not support the tool on any object.
Press the switch with a finger and hold it. Make sure the blade moves freely and the tool does not vibrate excessively and does not emit smoke or a suspicious smell. In case and irregularity is observed, turn the saw off, disconnect the plug from the mains and have the tool repaired at an authorised service point.
The switch is equipped with a lock, which may be used during long cutting. When the switch is pressed down, press the lock button and release the switch. The lock is released when the switch is pushed down. The tool is turned off when it is unlocked and the switch is released. Once the tool has been turned off, the blade keeps moving for a while.

Cutting of wood
Before you proceed to cutting wood, use a woodwork pencil to draw the cutting line. Then place the tool on the foot and place the blade in accordance with the line, and turn the tool on, wait until it has reached the nominal rotation and start cutting. During cutting do not exert excessive pressure against the foot and the blade, since this might break the inserted tool.
In case of cutting wood, start cutting at a lower rotation and increase it during cutting.

Deep cutting

Attention! Deep cutting may be realised only in case of soft materials, such as soft wood or plasterboards. Do not ever realise deep cutting in metal or another hard material.

In case of deep cutting, use a short blade. Set the maximum rotation. Place the edge of the foot on the material to be cut and turn the tool on. Pressing the button, let the blade penetrate the material until the foot completely rests on the material being cut. Continue cutting along the marked line.

Cutting at the edge

Attention! While cutting at the edge, use a special blade of high flexibility.

It is possible to cut directly at the walls, floors and in other places which are difficult to reach, e.g. while cutting pipes off. During cutting, make sure the blade is continuously going through the full section of the material being cut. Cutting around the wall, which may cause the tool to rebound towards the operator.
It is recommended to install a blade which is turned by 180 grades as related to the normal position. This will make the cutting easier.

Cutting orifices
Attention! For the purpose of cutting orifices, use the blades for cutting arcs.
Before you start work, draw the cutting line. Drill a hole, insert the blade and start cutting.

Cutting metal
Attention! Select an adequate blade for the metal to be cut. This will increase safety and prolong the life of the blade.
In case of cutting of thinner sheet metal, place it between two pieces of wood. This will permit to obtain a smooth cutting line and reduce the vibration generated during work.
It is recommended to use an adequate cooling agent for the given metal. If possible, spread a thin oil film within the area of opera tion of the foot of the saw. This will make operation of the saw easier.

Additional remarks
Avoid overloading the tool the temperature of the external surfaces must not exceed 60oC.
Once the task has been concluded, turn the saw off, remove the plug of the tool from the mains socket and inspect the machine. The declared total value of vibration has been determined by means of a standard measurement method and may be used to compare the tool with another one. The declared total value of vibration may be used for an initial evaluation of exposure. Attention! The vibration caused during work with the tool may differ from the declared value, depending on the way in which the tool is used.

ATTENTION! It is required to determine safety measures to protect the operator, based on evaluation of exposure under actual circumstances of operation of the machine (including all the phases of the working cycle, for example the time when the tool is off or is idling, and the activation time.

Maintenance and overhaul

ATTENTION! Before any adjustments, technical service or maintenance operations unplug the tool.

Once the operations have been finished, the technical conditions of the tool must be assessed by means of external evaluation and inspection of the following elements: body and handle, conductor with a plug and deflection, functioning of the electric switch, patency of ventilation slots, sparking of brushes, noise level of functioning of bearings and gears, startup and smoothness of operation.

During the guarantee period the user must not dismantlle the electric tools or change any subassemblies or elements, since it will cancel any guarantee rights. All irregularities detected at overhaul or during functioning of the tools are a signal to have the tool repaired at a service shop. Once the functioning has been concluded, the casing, ventilation slots, switches, additional handle and protections must be cleansed with a stream of air (at a pressure not exceeding 0.3 MPa), with a brush or a cloth without any chemical substances or cleaning liquids. Tools and handles must be cleansed with a clean cloth.
