Safety instructions for industrial fans

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Pass these safety instructions on to the operating company for safekeeping.
The operating and service personnel must be able to view these safety instructions at all times.

Required qualifications for installation work

These fans may only be installed, set up, retrofitted, commissioned, cleaned, serviced or repaired by installers specialised in ventilation technology. Electrical connection, commissioning, maintenance and repairs may only be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with DGUV regulation 3, Section 2 (3) and in compliance with the relevant standards (e.g. DIN EN 50110-1) and technical rules. Further provisions of other national laws must be taken into account.
Qualifications, requirements: Specialist training and knowledge of compulsory technical standards, EU Directives and EU Ordinances. Installations are to be carried out professionally in accordance with the planning documents and the enclosed operating instructions.
Applicable accident prevention regulations, occupational health and safety measures (protective clothing in good repair etc.) must be observed. Installation work by trainees is only permitted under the supervision of the above-mentioned trained specialists.

HAZARDS — LEVELS

DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which will result in serious injury or death, if not avoided.
WARNING: Indicates a possibly hazardous situation, which could result in severe injury or death, if not avoided.
CAUTION: Indicates a possibly hazardous situation, which could result in minor injuries, if not avoided.
NOTICE : Indicates a possible situation, which could cause damage to the product or its surroundings.

GENERAL SAFETY REGULATIONS

  • Read these safety instructions in full. Before installation, also read the installation and operating instructions of the fan at www.maico-ventilatoren.com. Follow the instructions.

  • Only use the fan for its intended purpose, see the installation and operating instructions enclosed with the fan.

  • Use personal protective equipment (protective clothing, hard hat, protective goggles, etc.) for your own protection in the event of possible hazards. Pay attention to the applicable safety and accident prevention regulations.

  • Safety devices are designed for your safety. Never bypass or tamper with the safety devices.

  • The operating company undertakes to only use the fan when in perfect condition. Electrical equipment should be checked regularly. Loose connections should be re-secured, damaged lines or cables should be replaced immediately.
    DANGER

  • Do not deposit combustible materials, liquids or gases near the fan → In case of ignition or fire, hazardous substances may enter the rooms with the ventilation.

  • Never operate the fan in an explosive atmosphere or in combination with a lab extraction unit → Risk of explosion due to explosive gases and dusts.

  • In the case of subsequent additions or modifications (range hood, air-ventilated fireplace, etc.), have the system compatibility of the ventilation system determined/ensured by a planning office → Risk of injury and risk to health in the event of improper operation. If using an exhaust air range hood or air ventilated fireplace, this must be accepted by a regional master chimney sweep.

  • Risk of suffocation when handling packaging materials. Keep foil materials and small parts away from children.
    WARNING

  • Install the fan in accordance with the planning specifications → Improper operation with incorrect or improperly installed fan.

  • When the fan is running, be sure to keep a sufficient distance from the fan and do not insert any objects into the unit → Risk of injury due to the suction effect of the fan and the rotating impeller. Hair, clothing, jewellery etc. may be pulled into the fan if you get too close to it.

  • Note the insulation of connected ducts and ventilation channels.

  • Provide for sound insulation measures for ducts and ventilation channels. Use tubular sound absorbents to reduce noise emissions or for acoustic insulation. Recommendation: Insulate the channels sufficiently to prevent diffusion.

  • Never use the fan to convey chemicals or aggressive gases/vapours → Risk to health if these substances are spread throughout the rooms.

  • Before removing covers and installing the electrics, switch off all supply circuits and secure them against being accidentally switched back on. Position a visible warning sign.

  • Operate the fan only with original components → Risk of injury and risk to health in case of modifications or conversions or if non-approved components are used. Changes and modifications are not permitted and release the manufacturer from any guarantee obligations and liability, e.g. if the housing is drilled at a point which is not permitted.

  • Secure work areas against unauthorised entry, falling and falling objects → Risk of injury/equipment damage if the fan or an object falls during installation removal, cleaning, maintenance or repair. Pay attention to the applicable accident prevention regulations.
    CAUTION

  • Clean the fan at regular intervals, especially after a longer period of standstill → Risk to health due to deposits on the unit (mould, germs, dust, etc.) after a longer period of standstill.

  • Risk of cuts from metal housing plates with sharp edges. Use personal protective equipment (cut-resistant gloves) for installation work.
    NOTICE

  • Never operate the fan during the construction phase. Fan and ducting can become dirty and damage the fan.

  • Never use the fan to convey air saturated with water vapour or grease or if solid particles can adhere to the fan → damage to the unit. Steam-saturated or greasy air or solid particles which may stick to the unit, can soil the fan and reduce the efficiency.
    In the case of EZF/DZF fans, damage to the unit if water vapour-saturated air is conveyed and condensate is produced when used in rooms with exhaust air humidity > 70 % r.h. Do not use the fan for long periods at an air humidity > 70 % (up to approx. 80 % r. h. for a short time), for example in swimming pools or to dry out new buildings.

  • Install the fan and accessories professionally and properly, otherwise improper/inadmissible operation may be caused. Protect the fan, controls, sensors and ducts against foreign bodies being sucked in. In case of a free inlet, fit a protective grille suitable for the type (e.g. SG …/SGR ..). The fan may be operated only if the protection against accidental contact with the impeller is guaranteed to be in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13857.

  • High noise emissions near the fan. Observe sound power levels → rating plate and technical documents. When planning, take into account sound insulation at the installation site. Use additional visual warning signs to safeguard workplace areas.

Wall fans

NOTICE
Never use EZF/DZF and EZQ/DZQ/EZS/DZS fans in combination with a frequency converter → damage to the unit.

MDR EC roof fans

WARNING

  • MDR EC: Never use an MDR fan with range hoods with exhaust air mode on → Grease and oil vapours contaminate the ventilation unit and ventilation ducts and can reduce efficiency. In exhaust air rooms with greasy air (kitchens) only use ventilation valves with grease filters. In terms of energy consumption, use range hoods in circulating air mode.

Transport

WARNING

  • Danger to life if the fan falls with improper or incorrectly attached transport equipment/lifting gear.Depending on the product family and type, the fan can weigh up to 80 kg. Comply with the applicable safety and accident prevention regulations. Observe the maximum permissible loading capacity of lifting gear.

  • Only attach transport equipment (cables, chains etc.) to the intended attachment points on the fan. EZQ/DZQ: Only attach the transport equipment to the square wall plate.
    EZS/DZS: Only attach the transport equipment to the steel wall ring. MDR EC: Only attach the transport equipment to the two ring nuts.

  • Observe the centre of gravity (middle) during transport.

  • For transport and storage, observe the technical data → installation and operating instructions.

  • Wear protective gloves, when working with components with sharp edges, to avoid cuts.

  • Only lift heavy fans with several people, especially in case of ceiling installation. For fan weight → rating plate. For heavy units, use a lifting device/lifting equipment suitable for the total weight.

  • Do not stand under a suspended load.

  • Check the fan for transport damage before installation. Do not commission a damaged unit.

Operation

The fan is switched on or off with a switch (provided by customer).

CAUTION

  • People with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or a lack of knowledge may only operate the fan if they are properly supervised or have been correctly instructed regarding the dangers by a responsible person. This also applies to children.
    **WARNING**

  • Only operate the fan when it is completely assembled and correctly installed and adjusted.

  • Switch the fan off immediately if it is damaged, especially if you notice damage or faults that endanger persons or property. Prevent further use until the unit has been completely repaired.

  • In the event of a fire or chemical accident (smoke, vapours) in your environment, switch off fan until the outside air is harmless again.

Installation

WARNING

  • Observe the requirements at the installation site, environmental conditions and technical data of the fan.

  • Avoid damage to the connection cables during installation → Danger of short-circuits due to damaged connection cables routed to the outside. Installation only by qualified electrician. Check the connection cables after installing the unit.

  • Wear protective gloves, when working with components with sharp edges, to avoid cuts.

  • Only lift the ventilation unit with several persons, especially in case of ceiling installation. Never walk under suspended loads. For heavy units, use a lifting device/lifting equipment suitable for the total weight.

  • Install the fan only on walls and ceilings with sufficient load-bearing capacity (min. 200 kg/m³ – 300 kg/m³ depending on the weight of the unit) and with sufficiently dimension ed mounting material.
    The fan vibrates slightly. Risk of injury in case of falling unit. Sufficiently dimension ed mounting material is to be provided by the customer. Use vibration dampers for vibration-damped mounting. Observe the minimum strength class of the fixing screws.

  • The motor may still be hot after switching off the fan → risk of burning due to hot motor. Note the cooling time. This can be up to 30 minutes, depending on the fan type.

  • Before working on the fan or removing covers, wait until the fan has come to a standstill → risk of injury when the fan is running.

  • When working at heights, use suitable ladders/ climbing aids and ensure that they are stable. Work in pairs and ensure that you are standing securely and cannot lose your balance and that there is no one under the unit. When working at heights (e.g. on the roof), the installation personnel must feel comfortable at such heights and have secure footing → danger to life. The applicable accident prevention regulations must be observed. Assembly areas must be secured against unauthorised entry, falling objects (unsecured tiles) and falling.

  • When performing working overhead, protect your eyes and respiratory tract. If necessary, use personal protective equipment (hard hat/protective goggles etc.).

  • Switch off the fan’s power supply before carrying out any work on it → Risk of injury due to unexpected or automatic start-up. The fan may start up automatically after shutting down in response to an overload, clearing of an impeller blockage or accidental switch-on.

Electrical connection

WARNING — Risk of electric shock

  • Observe the safety rules of electrical engineering.
    Before taking off covers and before installing the electrics, shut down all supply circuits, switch off mains fuse, check that no voltage is present, secure against being accidentally switched back on and position a visible warning sign.

  • Observe the applicable regulations for electrical installations, e.g. DIN EN 50110-1 and DIN EN 60204-1, in Germany in particular VDE 0100 with the corresponding parts → In case of non-observance danger due to electric shock, fire or short circuit.

  • Do not switch on the fan until it is completely installed. Do not commission a damaged unit. Prevent from being switched back on until fully repaired.

  • Only connect the fan according to the circuit diagram/wiring plan. A fixed electrical installation is mandatory. Note the voltage and frequency stated on the rating plate. Use a mains isolation device with contact openings of at least 3 mm at each pole.
    Avoid contact with components (damage due to static charge).

  • Use cables of type NYM-O or NYM-J with 3 x 1.5 mm², 5 x 1.5 mm² or 7 x 1.5 mm² suitable for the unit type. For permissible cable types, see chapter Technical data of the installation and operating instructions or on the Internet at maico-ventilatoren.com.

  • Perform a function test after completing maintenance and repair work.

  • EZD/DZD : Be sure to fit a repair switch at the installation site so that all poles of the unit can be disconnected from the mains on site during cleaning, maintenance or repair work. It must be possible to secure the repair switch against being switched on again.

  • The degree of protection specified on the rating plate is only valid if the unit is installed as intended, in a horizontal installation position and if the connection cable is properly guided into the terminal box. EZR/DZR, EZQ/DZQ and EZS/DZS: Degree of protection IP 54/IP 55 only with horizontal installation position or, in the case of vertical installation, with downward air flow direction.

  • The terminal box cover must be properly fitted so that the surrounding seal is tight against the terminal box all the way around.

  • With protection class I, connect the PE conductor and check the connection.

  • Check protective-conductor continuity on housing.

  • Proceed with caution in the event of a malfunction.
    The fan may also be energised when at a standstill and may be switched on automatically by sensors (time delay, humidity etc.) or by the thermal switch in the motor winding. Maintenance and fault finding only permissible when carried out by qualified electricians.

Earthing systems

  • Properly earth fans, installed in outdoor areas, in accordance with IEC 60364-5-54.

Air-ventilated fireplaces

DANGER

  • Ensure sufficient supply air intake when operating with air-ventilated fireplaces. Observe the maximum permitted pressure difference of 4 Pa.
  • Risk of death from carbon monoxide when operating with air-ventilated fireplaces. Fans may only be installed in rooms, apartments or housing units of a comparable size, in which air-ventilated fireplaces are installed:
    • if parallel operation of air-ventilated fireplaces for liquid or gaseous fuels and the air-extracting equipment can be prevented via safety devices, or
    • if the extraction of exhaust gas from the air-ventilated fireplaces is monitored by special safety devices.
  • In the case of air-ventilated fireplaces for liquid or gaseous fuels, the fireplace or the ventilation system must be switched off if the safety device is triggered.
  • In the case of air-ventilated fireplaces for solid fuels, the fan must be switched off if the safety device is triggered.

Cleaning, care, maintenance

WARNING : Before cleaning tasks and maintenance tasks, disconnect fan at all poles from the power supply, secure it against being accidentally switched back on and position a visible warning sign.
Cleaning is carried out as required. Cleaning intervals are to be determined by the operating company – frequency depends on ambient conditions and expected impairments.
Maintenance: The fan is maintenance-free. Nevertheless, check the fan from time to time for bearing noises, damage and disproportionate vibrations. In the event of a fault, contact an authorised specialist installer.

CAUTION : Specialist knowledge is needed for proper cleaning and maintenance of the fan. Have the fan cleaned and serviced every two years, by a specialist installer, so that the fan operates hygienically.

Accessories

WARNING

  • The fan is tested and approved with original components → Danger when using accessories that are not approved.
  • Modifications and alterations to the unit are not permitted and release the manufacturer from any guarantee and liability.
