Safety instructions

Please read the instructions carefully before installing and using for the first time. Follow the in-structions. Pass these instructions on to the owner for safekeeping.
The fan may only be installed, set up, retrofitted, commissioned, cleaned, serviced or repaired by installers specialised in ventilation technology. Electrical connection, commissioning, maintenance and repairs may only be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with DGUV regulation 3, Section 2 (3) and in compliance with the relevant standards (e.g. DIN EN 50110-1) and technical rules. Further provisions of other national laws must be taken into account.

Qualifications, requirements: Specialist training and knowledge of compulsory technical standards, EU Directives and EU Ordinances. The installations must be carried out professionally. Ap-plicable accident prevention regulations, occupational health and safety measures (protective clothing in good repair etc.) must be observed. Installation work by trainees is only permitted under the supervision of the above-mentioned trained specialists.

  • Risk of combustion/fire from flammable ma-terials, liquids or gases in the vicinity of the fan. Do not place any flammable materials, liquids or gases near the fan, which may ignite in the event of heat or sparks and catch fire.
  • Attention: Damage to unit due to steam-saturated or greasy air or adhering solid particles. Steam-saturated or greasy air or solid particles which may adhere to the unit, can soil the unit and reduce the efficiency. Never use fan to convey these substances.
  • Danger: Explosive gases and dust may ignite and cause serious explosions or fire. Never use fan unit in an explosive atmosphere (risk of explosion).
  • Risk to health from chemicals or aggressive gases/vapours. Chemicals or aggressive gases/vapours may harm health, especially if they are distributed throughout the rooms by the unit. Never use fan to distribute chemicals or aggressive gases/vapours.
  • Risk of death from carbon monoxide when operating with air-ventilated fireplaces. Ensure sufficient supply air intake when operating with air-ventilated fireplaces. Observe the maximum permitted pressure difference of 4 Pa. This model always requires the approval of a regional master chimney sweep.
  • Risks for children and people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or a lack of knowledge. Fan may only be installed, commissioned, cleaned and maintained by persons who can safely recognise and avoid the risks associated with this work.
  • Choking hazard if packaging materials are swallowed. Keep foil materials and small parts away from children.
  • Risk of injury due to suction from the unit and rotating impeller. Hair, clothing, jewellery etc. may be pulled into the unit if you get too close to the fan. Keep sufficient distance during operation. Do not insert any objects into the fan.
  • Health risk due to deposits on the unit (mould, bacteria, dust etc.) after the fan has not been used for a long time. Clean fan at regular intervals, especially after the fan has not been used for a long time.
  • Attention: A fan that is not mounted correctly may result in non-intended operation or impermissible operation. Ensure that foreign objects cannot be drawn into the fan and ducts. With a free inlet, fit a protective grille (e.g. SG ../ SGR .. protective grille). The fan may be operated only if the protection against accidental contact with the impeller is guaranteed to be in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13857.
  • Risk of injury and risk to health in the event of changes or modifications or if components which are not permitted are used. The unit may only be operated with original components. Changes and modifications are not permitted and release the manufacturer from any guarantee obligations and liability, e.g. if the housing is drilled at a point which is not permitted.
  • Fan does not satisfy standard DIN 18017-3 for single air extraction systems. Do not use in systems in accordance with DIN 18017-3.
  • Never operate the fan during the construction phase. Fan and ducting can become dirty and damage the fan.
  • Use personal protective equipment (protective clothing, hard hat, protective goggles, etc.) for your own protection in the event of possible hazards. Pay attention to the applicable safety and accident prevention regulations.
  • When working at heights, use suitable ladders/climbing aids and ensure that they are stable. Ensure that you are standing securely and cannot lose your balance and that there is no one under the unit. The applicable accident prevention regulations must be observed. Assembly areas must be secured against unauthorised entry, falling objects and falling.
  • Switch the fan off immediately if it is damaged, especially if you notice damage or faults that endanger persons or property. Prevent further use until the unit has been completely repaired.
  • The motor may still be very hot after the overload protection has been triggered or the fan has been switched off → Risk of burning due to hot motor. Note the cooling time. This can be up to 15 minutes, depending on the fan type. Usually, the fan switches back on automatically after cooling down.
  • Switch off the fan’s power supply before carrying out any work on it → Risk of injury due to unexpected or automatic start-up. The fan may start up automatically after shutting down in response to an overload, clearing of an impeller blockage or accidental switch-on.

Danger if the relevant regulations for electrical installations are not observed.

  • Before installing the electrics, shut down all supply circuits, deactivate the mains fuse and secure it so it cannot be switched back on. Attach a warning sign in a clearly visible place. Be sure to observe the relevant regulations for electrical installation; e.g. DIN EN 50110-1. In Germany, particularly observe VDE 0100, with the corresponding sections.
  • A mains isolation device with contact openings of at least 3 mm at each pole is mandatory. Only connect unit to a permanent electrical installation with NYM-O or NYM-J type cables, 3x 1.5 mm2 or 5x 1.5 mm2 (depending on unit type).
  • The fan may only be operated using the voltage and frequency shown on the rating plate.
  • Make electrical connections according to circuit diagram.
  • Check protective conductor continuity on the housing.
  • The degree of protection stated on the rating plate is only guaranteed if the unit is installed as intended and if the connection cable is correctly guided through the cable grommet(s). The grommets must tightly seal the cable sheathing. The terminal box cover must be properly fitted so that the surrounding seal is tight against the terminal box all the way around.

Intended use

EN fans are used for air extraction, ENR fans for air extraction or ventilation of offices, business and commercial premises, restaurants, doctors’ surgeries, etc.
ENR fans are reversible, the air direction can be reversed with an additional toggle or reversing switch.

Operation of the fan is only permissible:

  • in indoor areas,
  • for surface mounting on walls, ceilings or in sloping roofs,
  • with permanent electrical installation, surface-mounted or flush-mounted.

EN fans must be combined with an MK, BK or AS shutter, ENR fans with an MK or BK shutter. The fans are speed-controllable and intended for domestic or similar purposes.

Overload protection
The motor overload protection switches the fan off automatically in the event of overheating/overload. ATTENTION: After cooling/rectifying the fault, the fan can restart automatically.

Ambient conditions

  • Permissible maximum temperature of air medium +40 °C.
  • Sufficient supply air intake must be ensured during operation with air-ventilated fireplaces. The maximum permitted pressure difference per residential unit is 4 Pa.
  • Store unit only in a dry location (-20 to +50 °C).

Installation instructions

ATTENTION : Damage to unit/functional problems in the event of rubbing impeller. Do not fit the flange sleeve either twisted or crushed. Make sure that the surface is level.
ATTENTION : Risk of short circuits/damage to unit if condensation builds up in the fan housing.

  • Observe minimum wall thickness:
    EN 20, ENR 20, EN 25, ENR 25: 105 mm EN 31, ENR 31: 130 millimeters

  • Observe the permissible load-bearing capacity of the wall/ceiling.

  • Allow sufficient space to the wall or ceiling.

  • Any installation position can be selected.

  • Lay the power cable to the installation site, either surface-mounted or flush-mounted.

  • Use mounting material suitable for base and of sufficient dimensions.

  • Push the cable grommets through correctly, i.e. circular and slightly smaller than the cable, to ensure the degree of protection.

  • Select the installation site where foreign objects will not be accidentally drawn in.

  • For installation of the external shutter/shutter, see the corresponding installation instructions. Never dismantle them and only install them on a flat surface to ensure proper shutter function.

  • For electrical external shutters with plug connections, disconnect the plug and wire the individual cable cores according to the relevant circuit diagram [} 21] .

Installation, electrical connection

Wall installation of fan

  1. Make wall breakthrough and dowel holes. For drilling distances, see Figure 1.

  2. If required, fit a WH wall sleeve.

  3. Lay the surface-mounted (AP) or flush-moun-ted (UP) power cable.

  4. For an electrically operated external shutter/shutter, install an empty duct with a slight slope to the outside (approx. 2°) → Figure 1 below.

  5. Remove the internal cover from the flange sleeve. To do this, hold the flange sleeve firmly, swivel out the internal cover on the underside and remove upwards.

  6. For surface-mounted connection, remove the protective bar [1.1].

  8. Remove the required cable grommet from the housing, pierce in a circle and feed through the power cable.
    Attention : If the power cable is inserted incorrectly, moisture/water can penetrate the terminal box → risk of short circuit/damage to unit.

  9. Insert the cable grommet in the housing. Ensure that the cable grommet is correctly seated in the housing and tightly encloses the power cable. If necessary, additionally seal the cable grommet.

  10. Attach the flange sleeve to the wall using suitable mounting material → Figure 2 above.

Wall installation of external shutter/shutter
Fit the external shutter/shutter in accordance with the corresponding installation in-structions.

  1. If the external shutter is electrically operated, feed the connection cable through the cable conduit at the rear into the flange sleeve and through the black grommet into the terminal box → Figure 2 below.
  2. Feed the connection cable through the black cable grommet into the terminal box. Ensure that the cable grommet is correctly seated in the housing and tightly encloses the power cable.

Attention : If the power cable is inserted incorrectly, moisture/water can penetrate the terminal box → risk of short circuit/damage to unit.

Electrical connection

  1. Connect fan to terminal block [5] and external shutter/shutter to terminal block [6] according to circuit diagram → Circuit diagrams [} 21]. If the Maico AS automatic external shutter is used, the connections to the terminal block [6] are omitted.
  2. Check protective conductor continuity on housing.
  3. Fit the terminal box cover and screw it on (tightening torque of the 3 screws 1 Nm). Ensure that the seal is properly fitted.
  4. Fit the internal cover. Do not twist it.

Ceiling installation, installation in sloping roofs

  1. Carry out the ceiling installation as described above under wall installation.MAICO-ENR-20-Axial-wall-mounted-fan-6
  2. Drill through the internal cover at position [B] using a suitable drill (Ø 3.5 mm). The hole prevents moisture and germ formation in the fan housing. Note dimensions.
  3. Secure the internal cover with the enclosed screw at marking [M]. The screw is secured in the internal cover with adhesive tape.

Commissioning

  1. Run function test.
  2. Check/ensure smooth impeller running. The air must be able to flow freely.

Operation
The fan is switched on and off using a light switch or separate switch. ENR fans can be switched between air extraction and ventilation with an additional toggle or reversing switch.

Cleaning, maintenance

The fan is maintenance-free.
Select regular cleaning intervals depending on the degree of soiling. Do not clean the cover in the dishwasher to avoid damage.

  1. Remove the internal cover. ATTENTION: Do not pull off the inner internal cover at the internal grille or the upper side → damage to unit.

  2. Clean unit components with a dry cloth.
    Use a vacuum cleaner if necessary. To clean the external shutter, swing the lamellae upwards. Do not use any aggressive, harmful or highly flammable cleaning agents for cleaning.

  3. Fit internal cover. Do not twist it.

Fault rectification

Fault finding and repairs only permissible when carried out by qualified electricians.
When the unit is at a standstill, check whether the thermal overload protection of the motor has reacted. The fan switches on automatically after cooling down.

Malfunction Cause, measures
Fan does not switch on. No mains voltage. Check whether the mains

fuse has failed. Switch on if necessary.
Thermal overload protection of the motor has triggered.| Motor too hot. Wait until motor and temperature limiter have cooled. Cool-down time can take up to 15 minutes.
Fan does not switch on.

Impeller not turning.

| Check impeller. Ensure that the impeller is not blocked by foreign bodies. Switch off the fan, secure it against being switched back on and clean it. Check the fan for unusual noises during operation.

Spare parts may only be sourced from and fitted by a specialist installer. Only use original spare parts.
