Utility Inspection Specialist

Summary/Objective

Supports field assessment, observations, and inspections of utility infrastructure (transmission, distribution structures, installation, substations, telecommunications, etc.). This support may include EDM’s utility and T&D asset management services. Job splits its time between Office and Field. The position is local (Denver and surrounding areas) and offers no per diem or subsistence pay.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support with electric transmission and distribution construction inspections and observations
  • Inspect all project-associated field operations as required
  • Create and maintain detailed inspection reports daily
  • Assist in field survey planning and coordination
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, landowners, and the public
  • Maintain all contract documents, necessary permits, and updated drawings
  • Performs duties in a manner that will promote and maintain good public relations
  • Assist in the development and execution of utility wildfire mitigation plan development
  • Support senior wildfire specialists with virtual and field assessments
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Ability and willingness to guide and direct peers in several types of work and environments.

Qualifications/Experience

  • 5-10 years of utility distribution line construction/maintenance experience preferred
  • Ability to read maps, prints, and diagrams
  • Ability to observe for conformance to plans, and specifications
  • Knowledgeable in construction principles and techniques
  • Project management experience is a plus
  • Ability to coordinate with engineers, developers, clients, and contractors with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Understanding of utility safety protocols, a plus
  • Proficient with basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office applications)
  • Collect and enter data on handheld devices, and laptops and use GPS navigation
  • Design experience using ArcMap Designer or AutoCAD
  • Bilingual is helpful but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license

Work Environment Office

  • This job operates in both a professional office environment and in the field. The employee routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. The noise level in that work environment is usually quiet.

Work Environment Field

  • Daily inspections require traveling to and maneuvering through various construction sites in all weather conditions.
  • This job is in an outdoor field environment; vehicle and foot patrol of utility power lines; remote locations as well as urban, and city environments; physical demands and travel from site to site, including walking/hiking on various surfaces including flat, dry, wet, slippery, uneven, rough, steep terrain, hills and slopes; exposure to noise, dust, grease, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions.

Physical Demands

  • Physical requirements include walking, sitting for extended periods, manual dexterity, hearing, seeing, lifting, and driving a motor vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate but can be noisy at times during the construction process.
  • The employee must have sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, sit, and operate a motor vehicle for prolonged periods; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 25 pounds); to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to see and hear in normal range with or without correction; operate assigned field equipment.
  • Climbing ladders is possible.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time exempt/salary position
