Product Usage Instructions

Development of New Features and Products:
To initiate and lead the development of new features, services, and products, follow these steps:

  1. Create functional specifications for the new product
  2. Direct in-house and contractor investigations
  3. Define development scope and cost
  4. Prioritize development projects and tasks
  5. Execute prototype testing
  6. Demonstrate prototype technologies to potential customers

Transition to Commercial Production:
To transition successful developments to commercial production, follow these steps:

  1. Provide marketing with advanced access to beta prototypes
  2. Assist with the preparation of technical and marketing literature
  3. Provide the Production Manager with all necessary drawings and instructions
  4. Obtain quotes for a first production run
  5. Handoff production activities to the Production Manager

Customer Support:
To participate in customer support for all products and related services, follow these steps:

  1. Provide customer support for questions related to substation systems
  2. Assist with field repairs of telemetry systems produced by EDM
  3. Review telemetry equipment performance occasionally

Summary/Objective

Our Fort Collins, CO office is seeking a Development Engineer to provide direction and manage research, development, and transition production of products commercially sold by EDM. The successful candidate must have an honest desire to serve the dedicated people who work hard to keep the lights on for the rest of us. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research new development opportunities
    • Stay abreast of customer support and sales communications, harvesting inspiration and guidance for bug fixes, feature changes, and new product ideas.
    • Research technologies, devices, components, software applications, etc.
    • Test and refine the viability of concepts through conversations with the products team, sales representatives, and customers
    • Participate in trade shows, conferences, and customer briefings
    • Periodically refresh knowledge of other EDM business sector activities and investigate technology needs as they arise
  • Initiate and lead the development of new features, services, and products
    • Create functional specifications, direct in-house and contractor investigations, and define development scope and cost
    • Prioritize development projects and tasks, balancing development efforts with other staff demands.
    • Define and execute prototype testing
    • Demonstrate prototype technologies to potential customers and collect potential changes and improvements.
  • Transition successful developments to commercial production
    • Provide marketing with advance access to beta prototypes, cost of goods, etc. for timely commercial market release
    • Assist with the preparation of technical and marketing literature
    • Provide the Production Manager with all device and component drawings, bills of materials, assembly and test instructions, etc., and obtain quotes for a first production run.
    • Handoff production activities to the Production Manager
  • Participate in customer support for all products and related services
    • Provide customer support when questions require a practical working knowledge of the substation, transmission, and distribution systems
    • Assist with field repairs of telemetry systems produced and installed by EDM
    • Occasionally review telemetry equipment performance

Qualifications/Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or Journeyman Electrician certification required
  • Two years experience with electric utility transmission and/or distribution systems
  • Two years experience in a role requiring regular customer service
  • Two years experience in product technology development is preferred but not required
  • Professional Engineering license preferred
  • Product manufacturing experience preferred
  • Working experience with standard electronic test equipment, metalworking, soldering, printed circuit board design and fabrication, injection molding, plastic printing,
  • Appreciation for and/or willingness to learn good business management and accounting practices

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and fax machines. Travel work environments will be primarily outdoors in the presence of high voltage.
  • In the office work environment, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and listen. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk (outdoor testing, carrying shipments to/from the assembly area). The noise level is usually quiet.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time exempt/salary position, plus discretionary bonuses.
