Introduction
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognize common weed species and apply a range of weed treatments and control options.
The unit applies to individuals working in a broad range of job contexts who undertake defined routine activities under supervision. They exercise limited autonomy within established and well known parameters, providing solutions to a limited range of predictable problems.
State or territory licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply in some jurisdictions.

Assessment types
In this unit you will complete the following assessments:
- Assessment Task 1: Written Assignment
- Assessment Task 2: Treating Weeds using physical method
- Assessment Task 3: treating weeds using chemical method
Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment
Instructions for this task:
Answer all questions in the space provided.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- common weeds identification and naming conventions
- weeds and dispersal methods common to work area
- common weed treatment options, including:
- cultural
- chemical
- mechanical
- biological
- Integrated Pest Management
- basic environmental considerations when using chemicals for treating weeds, including:
- spray drift and off target damage
- inversion
- re-entry period
- residues
- chemical handling
- regulatory requirements and responsibilities when applying weed treatments
- weed control equipment, capabilities, and limitations
- health and safety in the workplace including personal protective equipment required for controlling weeds
- principles and methods for securing treatment sites including, caution or hazard signs and signals
- purpose and use of chemical labels and safety data sheets (SDS)
- environmental considerations when controlling and disposing of weeds and waste materials
- record keeping methods and requirements.
Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in
this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Assessment Task 2: Treating weeds – Physical Treatment Option
Instructions for this task:
You are to treat weeds specified by your supervisor using Physical Treatment
Option. Follow the instructions below carefully and remain safe at all times
when using chemicals. There are three parts to this task, and they must be
completed sequentially.
Part 1: Prepare for the treatment
Part 2: Conduct the treatment
Part 3: Clean up and dispose of wastes
Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment by the due date.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Treating weeds using physical options ensuring off-target species were unaffected
- Recognize the target weeds
- Record target weeds
- Prepare control treatments
- Follow safety and health requirements
- Select and use PPE
- Clean up and store PPE
- Dispose of wastes
- Maintain records
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and you must answer all questions in full.
You must demonstrate that you are able to control weeds using the physical option.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry
standards specified in this unit.
