Introduction

Welcome to AHCPMG202 Treat plant pests, diseases, and disorders. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise plant pests, diseases, and disorders, determine the treatment options, and apply treatments under supervision. The unit applies to individuals working in a broad range of job contexts who undertake defined routine activities under supervision. They exercise limited autonomy within established and wellknown parameters, providing solutions to a limited range of predictable problems.

In this unit you will complete the following assessments:
Assessment Task 1 : Written Questions
Assessment Task 2 : Prepare for treatments
Assessment Task 3: Apply treatments
Assessment Task 4: Post Treatments Demonstration

Assessment Task 1: Written Assignment

Instructions for this task:
You are to answer the following questions. These can be handwritten, or word processed. If handwritten, they must be neatly written and legible for the assessor to be able to mark them. You must reference to the source of information for each answer.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. common pests, diseases and disorders identification
  2. pests, diseases and disorders and dissemination method common to work area
  3. pests, diseases and disorders treatment options
  4. basic environmental considerations when using chemicals for treating pests, diseases and disorders.
  5. regulatory requirements and responsibilities when applying control measures
  6. pests, disease and disorders control equipment, capabilities and limitations
  7. health and safety in the workplace including personal protective equipment required for treating pests, disease and disorders
  8. principles and methods for securing treatment sites including, caution or hazard signs and signals
  9. purpose and use of chemical labels and safety data sheets (SDS)
  10. environmental considerations when treating pests, diseases and disorders, and disposing of waste materials
  11.  record keeping methods and requirements.

Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Location: Classroom

Submission

Assessment Task 2: Preparing to treat plant pests, diseases and disorders

Student Instructions for this task:
For the purpose of this assessment, the supervisor is your assessor. The Assessor is to clarify items the student is unsure about prior to commencing. Student is to complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment by the due date.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Identify and record details of pest, disease or disorder and confirm with supervisor according to workplace procedures
  2. Discuss and select appropriate control technique with the supervisor
  3. Perform calculations according to control option and treatment requirements and confirmwith supervisor
  4. Prepare control options and treatments following required procedures
  5. Select and prepare equipment for use according to workplace procedures, supervisor instructions and manufacturer specifications
  6. Secure treatment area according to health and safety in the workplace procedures and supervisor’s instructions
  7. Identify health and safety hazards and risks in the workplace and apply appropriate controls according to supervisor instructions
  8. Identify, select, fit and use personal protective equipment

Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full and you must answer all questions in full.

You must demonstrate that you are able to prepare for work in a retail nursery setting.

All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.

Assessment Task 3: Apply the Treatments

Student Instructions
This task cannot be completed until you have completed and submitted Assessment Task 2: Prepare the Treatments.

Now that you have prepared your treatment options, you must now carry these out.

The Assessor is to clarify items the student is unsure about prior to commencing. Student is to complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment by the due date.

You are required to identify the diseases in three nursery plants.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Prepare treatments according to supervisor’s instructions, chemical label instructions, safety data sheets and manufacturer instructions
  2.  Apply treatments to minimise damage and exposure to off-target species according to workplace
    procedures, health and safety in the workplace and environmental legislative and regulatory requirements

Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full and you must answer all questions in full.

You must demonstrate that you are able to apply the correct control treatments to the plants specified.

All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.

Location : Plant retail nursery.

Assessment Task 4: Carry out Post Treatment Operation

Student Instructions

You are to clean and store PPE, dispose of waste and maintain the records. You will demonstrate the following skills to your Assessor over a period of time. Complete all aspects of the Treatment Plan document to finalise this unit.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Remove and dispose of treatment waste
  2. Clean and store PPE and application tools and equipment
  3. Record and report plant treatments

Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full and you must answer all questions in full. You must demonstrate that you are able to complete the plant maintenance operations and meet the criteria in the Assessor’s Checklist through demonstration of these activities.

Location: Plant nursery.
