Introduction

Welcome to this unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise commonly encountered plants, including desired species and weeds, and to document and confirm plant identification.  The unit applies to individuals who recognise plants under general supervision with limited autonomy or accountability.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment types

In this unit you will complete the following assessments:

  1. Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment
  2. Assessment Task 2: Practical Demonstration

Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment

Instructions for this task:

Answer all questions in the space provided.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. workplace requirements applicable to health and safety in the workplace for recognising plants
  2. principles and practices of plant recognition, including:
    a. plant morphology and physiology as they relate to recognising plants
    b. plant nomenclature
    c. resources for obtaining information about plants
    d. plant recognition techniques.

Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is
submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Resources required for this assessment task:

You need to have access to the following:

  • Pen and Paper
  • This Booklet
  • Access to learning materials
  • Access to the internet
  • Access to a PC and word processing software

Location: Classroom/Computing Lab

Submission

Submit your responses by the due date and in accordance with the general instructions at the beginning of this unit of competency. Attach the Assessment Agreement and the Assessment cover sheet for this assessment task.

Assessment Task 2: Practical Project – Recognise and identify  plants

Student Instructions
You are to complete the tasks as specified below. Word process any documentation or neatly
handwrite this. Your main task is to recognise a variety of plants safely.

Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as
stated and submit all work for assessment by the due date.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Prepare for plant recognition
    a. Confirm work activity and instructions with supervisor
    b. Recognise and applied workplace health and safety hazards, and report to supervisor
    c. Select and prepare tools, equipment and material for plant recognition activity
    d. Locate a range of desirable and non-desirable plants requiring recognition

  2. Recognise specified plants
    a. Conduct a visual inspection on plants to identify plant family features and classifications
    b. Record brief descriptions of plant habits, characteristics and significant features
    c. Use available resources to assist with plant recognition
    d. Seek advice to assist with plant recognition from appropriate personnel
    e. Recognise and name specified plants using their identifiable characteristics

  3. Identify plants
    a. Record plant information according to workplace requirements
    b. Confirm plant identification with supervisor, and refer to plant by botanical name

  4. Recognised a range of plants from a range of plant families and classifications, including:
    a. annual
    b. biennial
    c. perennial
    d. evergreen and deciduous
    e. trees
    f. shrubs
    g. ground cover
    h. climbers
    i. monocot.

Benchmark
You are to be able to recognise all plants as specified and complete accurately all documentation to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full and you must answer all questions in full.

All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.
