Introduction
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prune shrubs and small trees that are less than three meters in height while standing on the ground.
It applies to individuals who work under general supervision and exercise limited autonomy with some accountability for their own work. They undertake defined activities and work in a structured context.
No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment
Instructions for this task:
Answer all questions in the space provided.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- principles and practices of pruning
- basic botany and physiology as they apply to pruning
- correct and safe use and care of tools and equipment
- effects of pruning on plant growth and habit
- plant health principles
- plant names and growth habits
- use of hygienic practices
- AS4373-2007 Pruning of amenity trees
Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in
this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Assessment Task 2: Identifying Pruning Requirements
Instructions for this task:
You have been given a job instruction to prune a number of plants, as provided
by your supervisors. In this task, you are required to demonstrate your
ability to prepare a work plan and conduct risk assessment. For the purpose of
this assessment, the supervisor is your assessor.
Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment by the due date.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- identify pruning requirements
- select appropriate pruning tools and equipment for the location, access and size of material to be pruned
- identify and report site and tree hazards
- select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure correct fit
- recognize plants, shrubs and trees
- confirm with the supervisor pruning method to be used
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and answer all questions in full.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.

Assessment Task 3: Undertaking pruning activities
Instructions for this task:
Your job instruction requires you to prune a minimum of three plants according
to the work plan you have created. You are required to carry out pruning
activities and demonstrate your understanding of manual handling techniques.
You must record and report your work outcomes to the supervisor.
Submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet. Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- carry out pre-operational and safety checks on pruning tools and equipment
- operate machinery, equipment and tools as required
- carry out pruning of shrubs and small trees as required
- use correct manual handling techniques when lifting or moving heavy loads
- record and report work outcomes to the supervisor
- minimise environmental disturbance
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and you must answer all questions in full.
You must demonstrate that you are able to conduct potting up operations.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.
