Introduction

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce drawings that represent and communicate ideas. It does not relate to drawing as an art form. It applies to individuals who use drawings, either electronic or hand-drawn, for personal use or in response to a project or brief. Drawings may include design concepts for objects, processes or spaces, movement sequences for performances or screen productions, exhibitions, tenders, proposals or publications. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Pre-requisite Unit

Unit Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, you must be able to:

  1. Plan drawing work
  2. Experiment to represent ideas
  3. Create drawings

Assessment types

In this unit you will complete the following assessments:

  • Assessment Task 1: Written Questions
  • Assessment Task 2: Freehand Drawings x 3
  • Assessment Task 3: Digital Drawings x 1

Instructions for this task:
You are to answer the following questions. These can be handwritten, or word- processed. If handwritten, they must be neatly written and legible for the assessor to be able to mark them. You must reference to the source of information for each answer.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Physical properties and capabilities of the range of materials, tools and equipment used in drawing
  2. Sources of information about different approaches to drawing
  3. Work health and safety issues associated with tools and materials used for drawing
  4. Intellectual property issues and other legislation relevant to drawing.

Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Assessment Task 2: Freehand Drawings Time Allowed: TBA
Instructions for this task:

  • You are to create three freehand drawings that show a command of selected techniques as listed below in the task instructions and they must successfully communicate the required ideas.
  •  Submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet.
  • Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  • Plan and create your drawings that show a command of the selected techniques and which successfully communicate the required ideas
  • Identify drawing requirements from reference material and confirm with applicable personnel
  • Identify factors that may impact on how drawing work is undertaken
  • Explore techniques, materials and equipment according to required safety procedures
  • Select approaches that best suit the purpose of drawings and their presentation context
  • Organise materials, tools and equipment for selected techniques
  • Produce preliminary drawings and compare with drawing requirements in consultation with required personnel
  • Confirm intellectual property and other applicable legislative requirements are met
  • Finalise drawings, incorporating feedback on work in progress as required
  • Prepare drawings for presentation context
  • Interpreting information from familiar sources to determine drawing production requirements and legal and safety constraints
  • Gathers information and opinions from others using questioning and active listening techniques
  • Complies with safety requirements associated with creative work
  • Uses accepted practices and protocols in discussions of work progress with others
  • Analyses drawing requirements and tests the capabilities of materials, tools and equipment when determining the approach for final production that meets drawing requirements

Benchmark
You must provide three hand drawings using the techniques specified. Your drawings must communicate the required ideas. All questions answered in full. The answers to the questions must relate to your drawings and be technically correct to gain a satisfactory result. All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.
Location: Classroom/Studio with equipment and materials suited to hand drawings.

  • You are to convert one freehand concept drawing to a digital concept drawing.
  • Submit all work to your Assessor for marking by the due date and include the Assessment Cover Sheet.
  • Ask your Assessor to clarify items you are unsure about prior to commencing. Complete all tasks as stated.

You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:

  1. Plan and create your digital drawings that show a command of the digital drawing techniques and which successfully communicate the required ideas
  2. Identify drawing requirements from reference material and confirm with applicable personnel
  3. Identify factors that may impact on how drawing work is undertaken
  4. Explore techniques, materials and equipment according to required safety procedures
  5. Select approaches that best suit the purpose of drawings and their presentation context
  6. Organise materials, tools and equipment for selected techniques
  7. Produce preliminary drawings and compare with drawing requirements in consultation with required personnel
  8. Confirm intellectual property and other applicable legislative requirements are met
  9. Finalise drawings, incorporating feedback on work in progress as required
  10. Prepare drawings for presentation context

You must provide one digital drawing using the most appropriate digital techniques using a digital software program appropriate to the task. Your drawings must communicate the required ideas. All questions answered in full. The answers to the questions must relate to your drawings and be technically correct to gain a satisfactory result. All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry standards specified in this unit.
Location: Computer lab with appropriate software to produce the digital drawings.

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
