Universal Primary Wire Enclosure
Installation Guide for PN 403008 (Gen 2) and 402218 (Gen 1)
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. New installation and LED Retrofit Kit
installation to require knowledge of sign electrical systems. If not
qualified, do not attempt installation.
For New Installation, proceed with Step 1 below. For Retrofit Installations, begin with Retrofit Instructions on page 2.
New Installation

Tools required: Drill, screwdriver, and wire strippers. NOTE: Installation guide only for Universal Primary Wire Enclosure. Follow appropriate power supply install guide for power supply installation.

Components list: • Universal Primary Wire Enclosure, model number 402218 ( Gen 1 )/403008 ( Gen 2 )
• Class II SloanLED power supply only ( Gen 2 )
12 V, 60 W: SloanLED model number 701507-60C1, 701507-60C2 ( Gen 1, P/N 402218 )
12 V, 120 W: SloanLED model number 701507-120D1 ( Gen 1, P/N 402218 )
24 V, 100 W: SloanLED model number 701895-24S1, Philips Lighting XI100C410V024FNS1 (Gen 1, P/N 402218)
• For power supply, front (primary side) bracket surface area of min. 1.57″ (40 mm) width x 0.94″ (24 mm) height
• UL Listed wire connectors suitable for the number, size, and type of conductor
• Secondary wiring (optional): UL listed 18 AWG or larger diameter supply wire of appropriate wire type rated for minimum 85° C
• Cable ties (optional)
CAUTION: Turn off power to sign before inspecting or removing the existing light source and power supply. Power MUST remain off while installing the LED products.
NOTE: All materials removed must be disposed of in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws. -
Power Supply: Identify primary wires on power supply and location of mounting tabs. The power supply should be approved for use with the Universal Primary Wire Enclosure.

Mount Universal Primary Wire Enclosure: Unscrew cover from the enclosure and align mounting slot with power supply mounting tabs on the primary side. Use the mounting slot to secure the enclosure. CAUTION: Do not expose wiring to edges of sheet metal or other sharp objects.

Knockouts: Remove appropriate knockouts to connect primary wiring inside the box. Follow the appropriate power supply install guide. CAUTION: Have a licensed electrician connect to primary.
NOTE: Do not attempt to ground to the enclosure. Please ground to an acceptable part of the sign. -
Replace cover (Gen 2 [P/N 403008] ONLY): Confirm primary connections are inside enclosure. Return cover to the top of enclosure and screw in place. Please ensure the top cover is fixed in the correct orientation (see fig. A) with the lid closing off the opening between the enclosure and power supply. Replace cover (Gen 1 [P/N 402218] ONLY): Confirm primary connections are inside enclosure. Return cover to the top of enclosure and screw in place (see fig. B).
Retrofit Instructions
NOTE: This retrofit guideline is for the installation of the SloanLED Universal Primary Wire Enclosure. For a SloanLED power supply and luminaire retrofit, follow the appropriate installation guide.
GENERAL-PURPOSE RETROFIT SIGN CONVERSION. FOR USE ONLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH KIT INSTRUCTIONS. KIT IS COMPLETE ONLY WHEN ALL PARTS REQUIRED BY THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE PRESENT.
NOTE: All materials removed must be disposed of in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws.
WARNING: Risk of fire or electric shock. Install this kit only in host signs that have been identified in the installation instructions, and where the input rating of the retrofit kit does not exceed the input rating of the sign. Installation of this LED retrofit kit may involve drilling or punching holes into the structure of the sign. Check for enclosed wiring and components to avoid damage to wiring and electrical parts.
CAUTION: Turn off power to sign before inspecting or removing the existing light source and power supply. Power MUST remain off while installing the LED products.
This procedure is designed to aid in the installation of the SloanLED
Universal Primary Wire Enclosure. Skilled tradespeople familiar with general
construction, electrical, and sign installation techniques should perform the
installation. Licensed electricians should provide all installation and hook-
up of both primary and secondary input/outputs of the SloanLED power supply.
All installation and hook-up should be done in accordance with all National
and Local codes and permits. In no way is this document intended to construe
warranty or fitness of use of products described, nor is it intended to
provide safety instruction for those installing product.
Field installation of this retrofit kit into a sectional sign is subject to
acceptance by the local inspection authority. UL Classification mark on this
retrofit kit requires kit to be installed in a UL Listed sign only. See
retrofit installation instructions for LED products for parts that form the
complete kit
NOTE: If not installing as a retrofit, skip this section and proceed to New Installation.
- Make sure power is off. Examine all parts not intended to be replaced for damage and replace any damaged parts prior to installation. Check for any enclosed wiring and components to avoid damage to wiring and electrical parts.
- Remove existing luminaires and power supply or ballasts. Repair and seal any unused openings in the electrical enclosure. Openings greater than 0.5″ (12.7 mm) diameter require a metal patch secured by screws or rivets and caulked with non-hardening caulk. Smaller openings may be sealed with non-hardening caulk.
- If required by local, state, or national electric code, install a new disconnect switch. Continue with Step 3 in New Installation instructions (page 1).
