MAINTENANCE
CONTROL AND TENSIONING OF THE CHAIN
-
The chain must always be checked and tensioned when it is cold. All metals expand with temperature. If we tension the chain when it is hot, we run the risk of overtensioning it and causing it to suffer excessively when it is cold. Remember to always handle it when it is cold, with the machine switched off and always with the power cable disconnected.
-
The chain tensioning of our GS240C is done by means of the side adjustment wheel on the bar cover.
-
First of all, unlock the wheel to be able to manipulate it by slightly lifting and turning the inner part of the wheel (dark grey) counterclockwise.
-
Once the rotation is unlocked, adjust the tensioning by turning the wheel (light grey): clockwise to tighten, anti-clockwise to loosen tension.
-
Once the tensioning has been adjusted correctly, following the graphs above, lock the tensioner again by turning the inside of the wheel (dark grey part) clockwise until the position is adjusted and the wheel cannot rotate.
-
To make sure that the tensioning is not excessive, switch on the machine and tap the trigger. The chain should not stop immediately, but should rotate for a second or two seconds more.
SHARPENING THE CHAIN TEETH
To sharpen the blade we will need:
- A guide.
- A limiting gauge.
- A flat file.
- A round file.
-
We brake the chain so that we can start sharpening without it moving.
-
Mark with a pencil or felt-tip pen the tooth where we are going to start sharpening. This mark will serve as a guide so that we don’t get lost and know where we have started sharpening.
-
Insert the round file into the face of the tooth to be sharpened in a position of about 35º.
-
Start filing. Slide the file at the correct angle and with a slight upward force.
- We perform the same procedure on all teeth.
- In order to be able to work, we must unlock the chain, move the remaining part to the upper part of the sword and lock it again so that we can work better.
- Invert the machine and perform the same procedure (step 2 to 8) in the other direction.
- Check the height with the gauge and rectify if necessary. The height between the guide tooth and the cutting tooth should be about 3mm.

BLADE
- Clean the bar groove after each use. Clean the lubrication hole with chain oil.
- Check that the front wheel has not loosened: if it has loosened, the guide bar must be replaced. Check the guide bar for nicks. Remove any nicks or burrs with a flat file.
- Check the tip of the guide bar for wear. If it is worn on one side only, turn it over. If it is worn on both sides, replace the guidebar with a new one.
- Check the bar groove for wear by shaking the chain. If it wobbles, you will need to replace the blade.
