EXTOL 417440 Wood Building Material Moisture Meter

Features and purpose of use

The device is intended for measuring the moisture content of lumber (likewise paper and cardboard) and building materials (mortar, concrete, plaster).
The moisture meter can be advantageously used for determining the moisture level of firewood since wet wood delivers only half the heat output (see below) and increased creosote is created when it is burned. The device displays both the moisture value in % as well as by means of LED indicators that show the moisture content of the tested item, where it is not necessary to remember the moisture value in % for low, medium and high moisture content of the material. The device can also be used for measuring ambient temperature, which is very important since ambient temperature affects the moisture reading. The device is pocket-sized and is very simple to use.

Inserting batteries
Place the device with the display on a level surface and tilt open the cover on the rear side of the device. Insert 4 new type-LR44 batteries into the battery compartment according to the marked polarity. Do not combine batteries of different charge levels.

Turning on the moisture meter
Press the control button to turn on the moisture meter.

Turning off the moisture meter
After approximately 30 seconds of inactivity, the device will turn off automatically.

Selecting a measurement mode

  1. Hold down the control button for approx. 3 seconds to enter the measurement mode selection mode.
  2. Then press the control button to go to the required measuring mode.
The following four modes are available: wood moisture measurement mode (symbol ” ” flashes), building material moisture measurement mode (symbol ” ” flashes), temperature measurement mode in degrees Celsius (symbol “ ” flashes), temperature measurement mode in degrees Fahrenheit (symbol “ “).
Once you have selected the desired measurement mode, wait. After approximately 3 seconds, the device will automatically exit the settings mode. Now you can start taking measurements.

Taking measurements

  • When the temperature measurement mode is set, the measured temperature value is shown directly on the display without the need to press the control button.
  • When setting the moisture measurement mode, push the probe into the wood or material that is to be measured. The measured humidity is automatically shown on the display without the need to press the control button.

Note:
When measuring the moisture content of a material, we recommend to also measuring the ambient temperature, since the moisture content of a material is affected by ambient temperature.
For the wood moisture measurement mode ( ):
If the measurement result is < 6 %, all LEDs will be off.
If the measurement result is ≥ 6 % to < 16 %, the green LED will flash. If the measurement result is ≥ 16 % to < 20 %, the yellow LED will flash. If the measurement result is ≥ 20 %, the red LED will flash.

The moisture content of freshly felled wood is in the range of 40 to 60 % and its heating value is half that of dry (seasoned) wood. At a moisture content of 15%, hardwoods (leaf wood) have a heat value of 14.6 MJ, however, at a moisture content of 50 % only 7.6 MJ, with softwoods (conifers) the values are similar since a large part of the wood is consumed in evaporating the water. The moisture content of firewood should thus be in the range of 15 to 25%, it may, of course, be lower, but it should not be higher not only due to the lower heat value but also due to the increased creation of soot, silting of the combustion chamber and the creation of acidic flue gases.

For the building material moisture measurement mode ( ) :
If the measurement result is < 0.2 %, all LEDs will be off.
If the measurement result is ≥ 0.2 % to < 0.7 %, the green LED will flash. If the measurement result is ≥ 0.7 % to < 0.9 %, the yellow LED will flash. If the measurement result is ≥ 0.9 %, the red LED will flash.

The color of the LED indicator indicates the moisture content. If no indicators are lit, the moisture content is very low, on the other hand if the red indicator is lit, the moisture content of the material is high.
If you wish to hold the current value on the display, press the control button and the symbol “ ” will appear on the display. The hold information on the screen mode is deactivated by pressing the control button and the ” ” symbol will disappear.

Display backlight

When the device is turned on by pressing the control button, the display will be backlit. The backlight will turn itself off after approximately 3 seconds.

Notes:

  • Keep the device dry.
  • Keep the test probes clean.
  • Keep the device and batteries out of children’s reach.
  • The type of material, ambient temperature, or even barometric pressure may affect the measurement result and then it is necessary to adjust the measurement value accordingly.
  • The device is not suitable for official government inspection purposes, e.g. for building inspections or reference purposes.

Waste disposal

PACKAGING MATERIALS
Throw packaging materials into a container for the respective sorted waste.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT AND BATTERIES
According to Directive (EU) 2012/19, unusable electrical appliances must not be thrown out with household waste but rather handed over for ecological disposal at an electrical equipment waste collection point. The battle- Aries must be removed from the electrical equipment prior to its disposal. The batteries must be separately handed over for ecological disposal (pursuant to Directive 2006/66 EC). You can find information about electrical equipment and battery collection points and collection conditions from your vendor or at your local town council office.
