FAQ
- What type of wiring should be used for mains and load connections?
- Use 16 AWG to 10 AWG (1.0 mm2 to 4.0 mm2) wiring for all line voltage wires going to the unit.
- What are the load ratings for different load types?
- The load ratings vary based on the load type. Refer to the manual for detailed information on load ratings for tungsten, AC general use, electric discharge lamp, LED drivers, etc.
Overview
20 A Max per output relay channel
50 mA per 0-10 V output channel-sink or source
Before Installing
Please read before installing.
WARNING: Danger of Shock. May result in Serious Injury or Death.
DO NOT WIRE WHEN LIVE! Switch off power to all power feeds via circuit breaker before wiring or servicing the ESN unit. The ESN unit is a feed-through device. This means that each switched output needs the Line and Load wires. THERE IS NO INTERNAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CONTROL POWER TO THE UNIT AND THE SWITCHED OUTPUTS.
WARNING
- Entrapment Hazard – May result in Serious Injury or Death. These controls should only be used to control equipment which is visible from every control location.
WARNING
- Fire Hazard – May result in Serious Injury or Death. Only use these controls to operate approved load and equipment types.
Important Note
Examples of such equipment which must not be operated by these controls include (but are not limited to) motorized gates, garage doors, industrial doors, microwave ovens, heating pads, fireplaces, space heaters, etc. It is the installer’s responsibility to ensure that the equipment being controlled is visible from every control location and that only suitable equipment is connected to these controls. Failure to do so could result in Serious Injury or Death. Buttons and LEDs in the unit are used for programming and troubleshooting. If wiring is exposed when accessing buttons and LEDs, the unit must be accessed by a certified electrician, following local codes.
Note
- For additional information on unit operation and ratings, please refer to Lutron product specification P/N 3691054 at www.lutron.com.
Mounting
- Mount in a Lutron DIN panel (refer to Lutron P/ N 3691183 for Athena and P/N 3691055 for HomeWorks at www.lutron.com), NEMA type 1, IP20 (minimum) rated consumer panel or breaker panel with integrated DIN rail (please refer to Lutron P/N 048466 at www.lutron.com).
- Mount with arrow pointing up to ensure adequate cooling.
- Internal relays make audible noise, mount where acceptable.
- Unit is 12 DIN modules [8.5 in (216 mm)] wide.
- Mount to DIN rail using clips on bottom of unit. Clips can be pulled out using a screwdriver.
Mains And Load Wiring
Note: A fully loaded unit can draw 80 A (maximum 20 A per zone). Breaker
and feed wiring should be sized according to local and national codes.
Use 16 AWG to 10 AWG (1.0 mm2 to 4.0 mm2) wiring for all line voltage wires
going to the unit.
Mains Wiring
- Turn off power and wire mains to the unit as shown.
- Apply power, “Prog” LED will light if unit is wired correctly.
Verify Wiring
- Follow the steps below to verify there are no faults in the load or wiring.
- Turn off power.
- Wire loads directly to Line / Hot to bypass the unit and protect it from wiring faults.
- Apply power and ensure that the desired loads power on without any faults.
Load Wiring
- Turn off power.
- Wire loads as shown for single-feed or multi-feed wiring.
- Apply power. See section 6 to verify load wiring.
- Any receptacles that are controlled by an automatic control device must be marked with “Controlled” located on the controlled receptacle outlet where visible after installation as stated in 2017 NEC® Article 406.3(E).

QS Link
QS Link (NEC® Class 2)
- Turn off power while servicing unit.
- Wire QS Link to the unit as shown, note terminals 3 and 4 are twisted, shielded pair. Recommended Lutron cable: GRX-CBL-346S for wiring length less than 500 ft (153 m); GRX-CBL-46L for wiring length up to 2000 ft (610 m).
- Link may be daisy chained or t-tapped, length not to exceed 2000 ft (609 m).
- Do not connect to terminal 2.
Emergency (QSN) / Manual Override (LQSE) Contact Closure Input (NEC® Class 2)
- QSN-4T20-D / QSN-4S20-D are intended for use with LUT-ELI-3PH or other UL 924 Listed Emergency Lighting control.
- If no external override control is required, leave pre-installed jumper in CCI terminals.
- Turn off power while servicing unit. DO NOT WIRE LIVE.
- Wire CCI as shown. A single pole switch (provided by others) must be wired in place of the jumper.
- If opened, unit will go to emergency or manual override light levels and not respond to inputs from other devices.
- When closed or jumpered, unit will return to the settings or levels they were at prior to entering emergency or manual override.
- For QSN-4T20-D / QSN-4S20-D, please refer to the LUT-ELI-3PH or other UL 924 Listed Emergency Lighting control system for recommended periodic testing.
0-10 V Wiring (QSN-4T20-D/LQSE-4T20-120-D only)
- 0-10 V zones 1-4 are double-insulated from all other inputs and outputs.
- 0-10 V zones 1-4 are not insulated from each other. They share the same common (negative “–” terminals are internally connected to each other).
- Connect only NECR Class 2 circuits, or connect only non NECR Class 2 circuits to 0-10 V zones 1-4. Do not mix NECR Class 2 circuits and non NECR Class 2 circuits.
- Follow all national and local codes for separation requirements.
