Installing a Vented Range Hood

This is a project many experienced DIYers should be able to handle as long as you have the right tools and supplies. Mounted hoods vary by manufacturer. If you don’t feel comfortable cutting through the wall of your home or doing electrical work, it may be best to hire a professional.

Step 1: Mark the Vent Location

Measure the range hood to determine where the vent comes out on the range hood and mark it on the wall.

Step 2: Check for Pluming and Wires

Before you begin cutting a large hole into the wall to install the vent, cut a small hole to see what’s behind the wall. If you find plumbing or electrical lines, consult a professional.

Step 3: Cut the Range Hood Vent Hole

Cut the hole for the vent using an oscillating tool. Consider cutting a hole that’s larger than thevent hole so you have room to work and a better view of your project. This will also help you runan electrical cable from the range hood to your power box. Be sure to keep this piece of your wall to use as a template in the next step

Step 4: Cut the Vent Pipe Opening

Using a drill with an extra-long drill bit, drill through to the outside wall with the template fromthe previous step. After drilling through the four corners, go outside, trace the four corners andcut an opening for the vent pipe. (Duct styles vary. If you have a round vent duct, you may want to use a hole saw attachment for this step.)

Step 5: Attach the Range Hood Vent Cap

Next, attach the vent cap to the wall with screws. For a tight seal on the edging, use caulk and screws around the cap. If your cap spans multiple rows of lap siding, you may want to cut a square of siding out and place a piece of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or wood in that spot togive your cap a flat surface for adhering.

Step 6: Prepare the Damper

Take the interior duct damper that came with the hood vent, size it to the hole and see howmuch space you have that you need to duct. Then cut a little test piece of ducting and put it inplace.
Place the test piece of ducting in the hole and make sure you have the right amount of space. Set the interior damper in place and mark the outside of the interior damper on both sides so you’ll know exactly where to tape the ductwork in place. Remove the interior damper.

Step 7: Run the Electrical Line

If necessary, drill holes through studs so that you can run the electrical line. Run the electrical linefrom where it comes out of the range hood over into the electrical box. Strip the wires back witha wire stripper and pair white to white, black to black and copper ground to ground. Connect them with wire connectors and then put them back inside the junction box. (Caution Always turn off the power at the breaker box before doing any w ring work.)

Step 8: Install the Interior Damper

Remove the motor housing from the vent by taking out the screws. Insert the interior damper into the back of the range hood. Make sure the damper is facing the right direction. Attach the damper with screws. Use HVAC foil tape to hold everything together and make it airtight

Step 9: Mark the Range Hood Vent Holes

For this next step, you’ll need a helper. Set the hood in place. Use your hands in the back to find out where the ductwork goes through and get it to fit flush against the wall. Make sure it’s centered and then mark your holes so you’ll know exactly where the hood goes.

Step 10: Insert the Screws

Take the hood back down and insert the screws. You’re now ready to complete the installation

Step 11: Attach the Vent Hood

Attach the hood and adjust it for where the screws are, line up the centers and tighten the screws.

Step 12: Finish the Wiring

Clip the excess electrical wire. Strip the wires and connect them with wire connectors, attachingwhite to white and black to black and then fasten the copper ground wire to the grounding wire connector.

Step 13: Reinstall the Motor

Reinsert the fan motor into its housing, install the filter and you’ve completed your range hood installation.
