Troubleshooting
Problem: I can’t seem to draw water from the straw, it feels clogged.
This can happen because sometimes air bubbles get trapped inside
the filter and prevent the flow of water. Try to do a few quick and
strong sips until there is some water flowing and then do the backwash
procedure.
First Time Use
Prior to the first use of LifeStraw Play, remove the filter and the carbon
capsule. Rinse all parts with clean water. Reassemble and LifeStraw Play is
ready to use.
Daily Use
- Step 1: Unscrew the top part from the bottle and fill it.
- Step 2: Screw the top part.
- Step 3: Enjoy safe water by sipping through the mouthpiece. Make sure the filter is adjusted properly to the top part.
LifeStraw Play will no longer filter water when the product has reached the end of its working life. Inability to sip water through LifeStraw Play indicates that the hollow fiber membrane filter should be replaced.
Cleaning
Follow this cleaning procedure as often as possible. We recommend always cleaning your unit after usage and before storing it away.
- Step 1: Discard any unfiltered water in the bottle. Then unscrew the bottle from the top part.
- Step 2: Blow air through the mouthpiece (backwash) into the filter until all the water trapped in the filter is removed.
FILTER AND CARBON CAPSULE ARE NOT DISHWASHER SAFE. All other LifeStraw
Play components can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
Proper maintenance and use will ensure the lifetime of the product.
Problem: The water I’m drinking with LifeStraw Play has a foul taste or
smell.
To solve this problem, use the cleaning procedure. If this doesn’t resolve the
issue, use a more thorough cleaning procedure: dissolve 2.5 ml of 3.5%
chlorine solution into the bottle filled with water. Make sure to remove the
carbon capsule from the filter. Then place the filter in the cap and screw the
top part to the bottle. Shake the mix in the bottle and leave it for a night.
Make sure to rinse the bottle and filter thoroughly after this procedure.
Problem : The mouthpiece leaks.
Sometimes changes in the air pressure will cause water to be expulsed from the
bottle through the filter. If you are on an airplane or an elevated terrain,
make sure to open and close the top part of the bottle to release the trapped
pressure and avoid leakage due to pressure change.
Disclaimer
The effectiveness of LifeStraw may be limited by environmental or hygienic
conditions that could contribute to the decontamination of water after it has
passed though the product’s internal filter. These conditions include but are
not limited to:
Long time storage
Before storing your LifeStraw Play, make sure to repeat the cleaning procedure
to ensure all excess water has been removed. Dry the bottle and the filter and
store it with the cap open. If water is left in a closed bottle, this might
produce mold. After long term storage, repeat the first time use procedure
before reuse.

Troubleshooting
Problem: I can’t seem to draw water from the straw, it feels clogged.
This can happen because sometimes air bubbles get trapped inside the filter
and prevent the flow of water. Try to do a few quick and strong sips until
there is some water flowing and then do the backwash procedure. Another reason
for clogging may be that larger particles in the unfiltered water are stuck in
the pores, blocking the filter. To do a more thorough cleaning of the filter,
dissolve 1 tsp of 3.5% chlorine (commonbleach) into a container filled with
500 ml water. Make sure to remove the carbon capsule from the filter. Then
place the filter in the cap and screw it onto the bottle. Shake the mix in the
bottle and leave it for a night. Make sure to rinse the bottle and filter
thoroughly afterthis procedure.
