Peak Series 8L Gravity Water Filter System and 8L Safe Storage Bag

LifeStraw® Peak Series
Gravity Water Filter System
with Safe Water Storage
8L + 8L

PEAK SERIES

HOW TO USE

1. Fill dirty water bag. When ready to use, unscrew
the neck cap to expose the gravity bag opening. Fill
with water and retighten the cap to close. Note. There
is no need to remove the pre-filter basket prior to
filling up the gravity bag.
2. Assemble. “Attach the membrane microfilter to the
gravity bag by first unscrewing the plug cap. Then,
screw the membrane microfilter onto the outside of
the neck cap, tightening until secure. To use the
gravity bag + safe water storage system together,
simply connect the exposed end of the hose to the
membrane microfilter, and secure the end of the hose
with the quick connector into the outlet located on the
safe water storage bag. Keep the pinch clip engaged
throughout assembly, until ready for water for flow.
3. Set. Hang the dirty water bag and the safe water
bag from two separate anchor points. The dirty water
bag needs to be hung at a higher height than the safe
water storage bag, for gravity to do its work. Note: the
higher you are able to hang the dirty water bag
(resulting in the hose as vertically straight as possible)
the more optimal flow rate you will achieve. Also be
sure to secure your safe water storage bag from a
separate, lower anchor point, and never hang the
weight of the safe water bag from the hose connections
only. Tip – You can use the included strap and
carabiner to hang the safe water bag from the dirty
water bag as well, for an extra level of support
between the two bags.
4. Ready to use. Release the pinch clip on the hose to
allow filtered water to flow through, letting gravity do
the work!
5. Close filter. When finished, tighen the pinch clip on
the hose to restrict water flow. This allows the hose to
be removed from both connection points. Replace the
plug cap on the membrane filter when a hose is not in
use. Note: we recommend removing the gravity
system from hanging position to allow for raising the
filter above the reservoir, preventing water from
filtering out while the system is being secured.
Backwash. Regularly backwash your filter after
drinking to keep the filter clean and to prevent
clogging. To do this, disconnect the membrane
microfilter from the top cap by twisting counterclockwise.
Then, screw the included backwash syringe onto
the membrane microfilter. Plunge the open end of the
filter into drinking water, and draw water up through
the filter by pulling the syringe upward and away from
the filter until it reaches the edge of the housing. Then
push water back through the filter by pressing the
syringe downward toward the filter until the water has
been fully pushed through the other side.
If storing your LifeStraw Peak Series 8L Gravity Water
Filter System for greater than 1 month without use, we
recommend following our long term storage instructions
to preserve the longevity of the filter and to
prevent clogging. For long term storage instructions,

LONG-TERM STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Avoid drying out the filter by storing with a saline
solution made by mixing a teaspoon of salt with water.
This will keep the filter at its highest performance and
maintain the hydrophilic properties of the membrane,
while also preventing any mold or algae from growing
during long-term storage. When the membrane
becomes completely dried out, it can be difficult to get
water to flow through again.
Follow these steps if you have already used the
LifeStraw Peak Series filter and you plan to store for
greater than 1 month without use. If storing for longer
than 3 months, we recommend cleaning with a diluted
bleach solution prior to storage for increased
disinfection. These instructions can be found at
www.lifestraw.com.
Immerse in Salt Solution. Using a reusable container,
dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt with 2 cups of water. Place
the filter into the saline solution and use the backwash
syringe to pull water fully into the filter. Place the filter
into the reusable container, still filled with salt water,
and seal tightly. Once the filter is removed from the
system, the bag can be cleaned with household soap
and water before setting out to dry.
Store. Store container with the salt water in a cool dry
place. If storing the gravity bag and/or safe water
storage bag, make sure the caps are open before
storage. If applicable, store your Peak Series Carbon
Filter Attachment System in a separate sealed
container and keep in a cool, dry place.
Resume Use. To use your Peak Series filter again,
discard the salt solution and fill a cup or container with
regular source water. Use the backwash syringe to
remove residual salt water from the filter by pulling in
the new water and pushing back through the filter.

TIPS

Having trouble making sure the filter is secure? Fun
fact! The handle of the plug cap can be used as a tool.
Simply fit the loop-end around the filter, using it to
screw the filter in the rest of the way.
Need some help re-inserting the pre-filter basket? We
find it easiest to pinch the bag around the neck area
while screwing in the basket. Push the cap toward the
back of the bag and twist it using the finger tab, until
it locks into place. You can give the pre-filter basket a
gentle push forward and backward to ensure it’s
locked into place.
Insertion is easiest when there is space between the
back of the bag and the front cap, so we recommend
holding the bag vertically when possible. Please avoid
trying to re-insert the pre-filter basket while the
gravity bag is lying flat, as this will be more difficult.
Test your gear before you go! Follow the how to use
instructions instructions to make sure your LifeStraw
Peak Series 8L Gravity Water Filter System is
operating as you expect it to.
Slow flow rate? Use the backwash instructions to
remove potential air bubbles in the membrane.
