IMPORTANT FOR FIRST TIME USE

Prior to the first use out-of-the-box of LifeStraw Flex, you should backwash the filter with the syringe at least 5 times. (See cleaning procedure).

LifeStraw Flex is a 2-stage water filter that exceeds the NSF 53 drinking water standard for reduction of lead, and also reduces chemicals and removes bacteria and parasites It can be used in 4 different wayS: as a personal straw, with the included bag as a gravity filter, or attached to a plastic water bottle.
Stage 1: Hollow fiber membrane filter removes 99.999999% of bacteria (E. coli, etc.) and 99.999% of protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, etc.). Lifetime: 2,000 liters (500 gallons)
Stage 2: Replaceable activated carbon fiber capsule reduces lead and chlorine, improves taste, reduces bad odor and organic chemical matters. Lifetime: 100 liters (25 gallons)

First-time use

Prior to the first use of LifeStraw Flex, open top and bottom screwcap and rinse all parts with clean water. Reassemble and LifeStraw Flex is ready to use. The inability to sip water through LifeStraw Flex may indicate that the hollow fiber membrane filter has reached its capacity.

Daily use with the gravity bag

1. Fill the bag with water
2. Roll the top of the bag 3 times. Close the buckle
3. Insert the hose correctly in the filter (bottom screw-cap) 3. Connect the hose to the quick-connect part on the bag
4. Lift up the filter. Slightly unscrew the bottom cap of the filter to let the air in the hose escape. Once the air is realeased, close the cap.

Daily use with a plastic bottle

1. Screw the bottom lid to the cap of any standard plastic bottle
2. Open the top lid on the top screw-cap and sip filtered water

Daily use as a straw

1. 0pen the top lid on the top screw-cap
2. Place the bottom of the filter in a water source
3. Sip filtered water

Cleaning

Follow this cleaning procedure as often as possible. Minimum twice a day during use. This is to prevent the filter from getting clogged and to help remove any trapped particles. Proper maintenance and use will help to extend the life of the product.

• Step 1: Insert the syringe into the top cap. Dip the bottom of the filter in water
• Step 2: Pull the top of the syringe. This should fill the syringe with filtered water out
• Step 3: Press the syringe full of water to rinse the filter (can be dirty water) of the filter mouthpiece

Long time storage

Before storing your LifeStraw Flex, make sure to repeat the cleaning procedure to ensure all excess water has been removed. If water is left in a closed bottle it might produce mold. After long tem storage, repeat the first time use procedure before reuse.

Replacing the carbon capsule

The carbon fiber capsule should be replaced after 100 liters (25 gallons)

• Step 1: Unscrew the top Screw-cap and remove the expired carbon fiber capsule
• Step 2: Rinse the new carbon fiber capsule under flowing safe tap water. Then, insert it by pushing it into the top screw-cap until it locks properly.

Troubleshooting

Problem: l can’t seem to draw water from the filter, it feels clogged.
Air may be trapped in the filter if it has been stored for a long period of time. Use the provided syringe and follow the cleaning procedure to unclog the filter. If you don’t have the syringe at this time, try blowing through the filter to remove the trapped air. Large particles from the dirty water may also get stuck in the filter. In this case, dissolve 1 teaspoon of commercial chlorine solution (common bleach) in 500ml water. Remove the carbon fiber capsule and soak the filter in the prepared cleaning solution overnight. Rinse and backwash the filter thoroughly with safe water before using Problem: The water I’m drinking with LifeStraw Flex has a foul taste or smel. To solve this problem use a more thorough cleaning procedure: dissolve 2.5 ml of bleach into a container filled with water. Make sure to remove the carbon fiber capsule from the filter. Place the filter in the container with the solution and leave it overnight. Make sure to rinse the filter thoroughly after this procedure to get rid of any residual chlorine taste. Problem: There is some water coming out of the filter around the mouthpiece. Make sure that the silicone seal is correctly inserted on the top and bottom screw-caps. If there is water coming out between filter and water containers (soft touch bottle, plastic bottle, hydration bladder or gravity bag) DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER. Any water that doesn’t pass through the filter is unsafe to drink. Tightening the filter may stop this issue.

6. Use in or exposure to extreme heat or freezing temperatures

Read these usage and safety instructions carefully before using LifeStraw Flex. LifeStraw Flex is a personal water filtration tool and should only be used for filtering water. The quality of the filtered water is not guaranteed if the product is submitted to conditions other than those encountered during its normal use. To prevent breakage, do not drop or hit LifeStraw Flex against a hard object. Do not drop the product in polluted water as this might contaminate the mouthpiece.

Drinking untreated water or improper use of LifeStraw Flex may expose you to harmful microorganisms and increase your risk of gastrointestinal illness. Reduce your risk of becoming sick by following these safety instructions and by educating yourself on drinking water safety.
Never use LifeStraw Flex with water that may be contaminated with brackish or seawater
DO NOT DROP or place pressure on this product in any manner. The intentional or unintentional impact of this product on a solid surface may damage the filtration mechanism within the LifeStraw Flex and render it inefficient and unusable. Do not use this product to drink water at a higher temperature than 60°C.. This product must not be used by children under the age of 5 without the supervision of an adult.
