PNi HP446 UHF Radio Station Channels
Warnings
- To avoid device failure and personal injury, please read this manual carefully.
- Do not use the radio without an antenna or with a defective antenna. Touching a faulty antenna could cause a minor skin burn.
- Use the radio safely. To avoid exposure to RF waves, do not bring the radio closer than 3 cm to the body during transmission.
- The use of accessories other than those recommended by the manufacturer is prohibited, as they could violate the regulations for the safe use of RF devices.
- PNI Escort HP 446 complies with European norms and laws.
- Do not use the radio in places where fuels, chemicals and other explosive materials are stored.
- Do not use the radio near medical or electronic equipment sensitive to RF signals.
- Do not use the radio while driving.
- Do not use the radio for a long time with the volume at maximum.
- Do not leave the radio and its accessories within the reach of children or pets.
- Do not transmit for a long time, as it could cause the radio to overheat.

Turn the radio on/off and Volume control
To turn on the radio, turn the volume control knob clockwise. You will immediately hear a confirmation sound. For one second, all icons will be displayed on the screen. Only the icons of the active functions will remain on the screen.
When the radio is on, turn the volume control knob to the left or right until you reach the desired volume level.
To stop the radio, turn the volume control knob counterclockwise. The screen will turn off.
Display the input voltage
When the radio is on, press the key . For 5 seconds, the power supply voltage of the radio will be displayed.
Note: The displayed voltage range is from 9V to 17V, the display data is rough data, if you need precise data please use the voltmeter to test.
Programming the Priority Channel (PRI)
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the desired channel. Long press the PRI key on the microphone to save the current channel. The PRI icon will appear on the screen.
Recalling the Priority Channel
Shortly press the PRI key on the microphone to recall the priority channel.
Press PRI again to return to the previous channel.
Dual Watch
Through the Dual Watch function, the radio simultaneously monitors the current
channel and the priority channel.
Long press the key to activate the Dual Watch function. The DW icon will
appear on the screen and the two monitored channels will be displayed
alternately (the current channel and the priority channel)
Long press the key again to disable Dual Watch function
Edit and save frequency/channel
Frequency mode
Note: When in frequency mode, press and hold MENU key to enter menu.
- Press the V/M key to enter the frequency editing mode. Only the frequency and active functions will be displayed on the screen. Press the keys UP and DOWN on the microphone to increase or decrease the frequency. Hold down the key UP or DOWN to quickly change the frequency.
- Press the V/M key to enter the frequency editing mode. Briefly press the key . The third digit of the frequency will sblink. Hold the UP or DOWN key to change the frequency by 1 MHz. Press the key again . The second digit of the frequency will blink. Hold the UP or DOWN key to change the frequency by 10 MHz. Press any key to exit without saving.
- After you have finished editing the frequency, press the key . The channel number will blink. Then press the UP and DOWN keys on the microphone to select the desired channel and press the V/M key to memorize the selected frequency on that channel.
Note: Before memorizing the channel, notice the decimal point [18] on the
screen. If the decimal point appears, then the channel number is empty. If the
decimal point disappears, then the channel has been stored successfully.
Frequency step: 2.5K, 5K, 6.25K, 10K, 12.5K, 20K, 25K, 30K si 50K.
Channel mode
If you are in frequency editing mode, press the V/M key to return to channel mode. The screen will show the channel number, frequency and active functions. Press the UP and DOWN keys on the microphone to increase or decrease the channel number.
Reception and Transmission
When the radio receives a signal on the current channel, the screen will light up green and the received signal strength indicator will be displayed.
Notes:
- If you have set the squelch level too high, you will only hear very strong signals.
- If during reception, the signal indicator and the green light of the screen flash but you do not hear anything, it means that the received signal has a different CTCSS/DCS code.
To transmit, press the PTT key on the microphone. The screen will light up red and the emitted signal indicator will be displayed. Speak at a distance of 2.5-5 cm from the microphone with a normal tone of voice. Release the PTT key to receive.
Monitor function (squelch disabled)
Use the Monitor function to disable the squelch and hear if there is activity
on the channel. To activate the Monitor function, long press the SQL key. The
screen will turn green. Adjust the volume from the volume control button.
Long press the SQL key again to exit Channel Monitoring mode.
Squelch level adjustment
The automatic squelch has 9 levels, plus the option to be disabled:
OFF – squelch disabled
1 – maximum sensitivity (minimum squelch)
5 – medium sensitivity (medium squelch)
Briefly press the SQL key. The SQL icon appears on the screen accompanied by the current level. Press the UP and DOWN keys on the microphone to increase or decrease the level. Press the SQL key again to save the setting.
Scan active channels
The radio has an automatic scan function that continuously scans all the
channels you have saved in the scan list.
Press the key . The radio will start scanning channels. The icon will flash on
the screen .
Note: The information displayed on the screen during scanning differs depending on the mode you are in (frequency mode or channel mode).
The radio will quickly scan all channels and stop on the channel where it detects a signal. If there is no activity on the respective channel for 5 seconds, the scanning function resumes.
If you want to transmit while scanning channels, press the PTT key, scanning
will stop on the respective channel during transmission and resume after 3
seconds after releasing the PTT key.
Briefly press the key again to exit scanning mode.
Add/Remove channels from scan list
Select the channel you want to add to the list of channels to scan. Hold down
the key to add the respective channel to the list. On the screen, in the upper
right corner, the icon will appear .
To delete a channel from the scan list, press the key briefly when you are on
that channel. The icon will disappear from the screen.
Set CTCSS/DCS codes
Press the key to access the CTCSS/DCS menu. The T icon appears on the screen, which means that the TX CTCSS code will be set on the current channel. Press the UP and DOWN keys on the microphone to select the desired code.
Press the key again . The icon will appear on the screen, which means that the CTCSS code will be set on the current channel. Press the UP and DOWN keys on the microphone to select the desired code.
CTCSS codes: 62.5 – 254.4, in total 51 groups.
Press the key again . The icon will appear on the screen, which means
that the DCS code will be set on the current channel. Press the UP and
DOWN keys on the microphone to select the desired code.
DCS codes: 000N – 777I, in total 1024 groups. N is positive code, I is reverse code. Press V/M key to choose positive code (N) or reverse code (I).
After setting the codes, press any key except the keys , UP and DOWN and to save and exit.
CTCSS Scan
Press the key to access the CTCSS/DCS menu. Press the same key again, the icon will appear on the screen. Then, press the key to enter CTCSS scan mode. When the radio finds a compatible CTCSS signal, it will stop on that channel for 5 seconds, after which it will resume scanning. Press any key except for the keys , UP and DOWN to exit.
DCS Scan
Press the key to access the CTCSS/DCS menu. Press the same key again, the icon will appear on the screen. Then, press the key to enter DCS scan mode. When the radio finds a compatible DCS signal, it will stop on that channel for 5 seconds, after which it will resume scanning. Press any key except for the keys , UP and DOWN to exit.
Keypad lock
Long press the key to lock the keys (except for the PTT key). The icon appears on the screen. Long press the same key again to unlock the keypad.
Menu
Press the key to access the menu. On the screen, in the upper left corner, the
icon F appears.
Press the UP and DOWN keys to navigate through the menu.
Press the key to access the menu you want to set. Press the UP and DOWN keys
to navigate through the options. Press the key to save and to return to the
main menu or press any key except for the keys , UP and DOWN to exit the menu.
Power selection
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the key to access the menu 01 PoW.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
Hi – high power (default setting)
MI – average power
Lo – low power
Bandwidth selection
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 02 BAND.
Press the key to access the menu Bandwidth.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
WIDE – wide bandwidth 25K (default setting)
NAR – narrow bandwidth 12.5K
BCL (Busy Channel Lockout)
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 03 BCL.
Press the key to access the menu BCL (Busy Channel Lockout).
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
OFF – BCL function disabled (default setting). If the BCL function is
disabled, you can transmit in any reception state.
On – the BCL function is active
Editing channel name
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 04 NAME.
Press the key to access the menu Editing channel name.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select the character for the location indicated
by the cursor.
Press the key to move the cursor to the next character.
Press the key V/M to move the cursor to the last character.
Press the key to exit.
TX OFF
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 05 TX.
Press the key to access the menu TX (disable transmission on the current
channel).
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
ON – transmission enabled, press PTT to transmit (default setting).
OFF – transmission is not allowed. If you press the key PTT you will hear a
beep
Reverse frequency
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 06 REV.
Press the key to access the menu Reverse frequency.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
ON – the function is enabled.
OFF – the function is disabled (default setting).
Offset direction setup
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 07 SHIFT.
Press the key to access the menu Offset direction setup.
The repeater receives a signal (UP-LINK) on a frequency and transmits that frequency (DOWN-LINK). The difference between the two frequencies is called the offset frequency. If the UP-LINK frequency is higher than the DOWN-LINK frequency, the offset direction is negative. If it is smaller, the offset direction is positive.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
+: indicates positive offset direction, which means that the transmitted
frequency is higher than the received frequency.
-: indicates negative offset direction, which means that the transmitted frequency is lower than the received frequency.
OFF: the function is inactive (default setting).
Offset frequency setup
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 08 OFFSET.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select the frequency.
0-70: Total 70 MHz frequency range available.
Default: 5.0MHz.
Nota: The offset frequency changes based on the frequency step setting.
Frequency step setup
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 09 STEP.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select the frequency step. This function is only
valid in frequency mode (VFO).
Options: 2.5K, 5K, 6.25K, 10K, 12.5K, 20K, 25K, 30K si 50K.
This function is auto-hidden when display in CH mode or NM mode
Display mode setup
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 10 DISPLAY.
Press the key to access the menu Display mode setup.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
FRQ: channel mode + frequency mode (default setting)
CH: channel mode
NM: channel mode + name.
Keys tone
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 11 BEEP.
Press the key to access the menu Keys tone.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
ON: key beep active
OFF: key beep inactiv
TOT (Timeout Timer)
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 12 TOT.
Press the key to access the menu Timeout Timer. This function limits
the transmission time. When it exceeds the preset time, the transmission is
interrupted and a warning sound is heard.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
1 – 30 minutes, in 1 minute increments.
OFF: inactive function.
Default: level 3
Scanning mode setup
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 13 SCAN.
Press the key to access the menu Scanning mode setup.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
SE: scanning stops when the radio detects a signal
TO: it pauses for 5 seconds once detecting a matching signal, then it resumes
scan
CO: scanning stops when the radio detects a signal, and when the signal
disappears, the scanning resumes.
Mic Gain
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 14 MIG.
Press the key to access the menu Mic Gain.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
1 – 3, total 3 levels.
Default: level 3.
NRC (Noise Reduction Circuit)
Press the key to access the menu.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to reach the menu 15 NRC.
Press the key to access the menu NRC.
Press the keys UP and DOWN to select one of the options:
NRC ON: the function is active
NRC OFF: the function is inactive.
Reset
When the radio is off, press simultaneously PTT + while turning on the radio.
RST + software version (2 digits) will appear on the screen. All settings will
go back to the factory default values.
