HANDHELD TDS METER

  • What is TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)?
    • TDS is a measurement that refers to the combined total amount of both inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water. These solids include salts such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonates, carbonates, chlorides, etc. as well as organic materials.
  • What is a TDS meter?
    • A TDS meter is a small hand-held device, used to indicate the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) in a solution.
    • Since dissolved ionized solids like salts and minerals contribute to the conductivity of a solution, a TDS meter measures the conductivity of the solution and then converts that figure to an estimated TDS reading.
    • The device is known for quick measurement. This hand-held device is suitable for checking TDS of natural surface water, tap water, tanker water, drinking water, treated water etc.
  • What does the TDS meter not measure?
    • A TDS meter does not measure contaminants which means that it will not indicate if the water is healthy or not. The TDS meter reading simply refers to the amount of total dissolved solids in the water, it will not indicate what those solids are and if they are harmful to your health.
    • For example, the device can reflect a high TDS meter reading but no harmful contaminants in the water.
    • Some healthy minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium can cause the TDS meter to spike the reading. So, any water filter with a remineralizer could cause a high reading on
    • the TDS meter, even though the remineralizer is adding good minerals.
    • On the other hand, the device can reflect a low TDS level even if several harmful contaminants are present in the drinking water.
    • The water can have heavy metals like lead, or other contaminants like pesticides, pharmaceuticals, or hexavalent chromium. The TDS meter will not pick these contaminants.
    • This is why you shouldn’t rely on a TDS meter to determine the water purity i.e. healthy to consume or not. It is important to not just understand how many dissolved solids are present in the water, but also, what those solids are and if they’re harmful to your health.

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

KNOW YOUR TDS METER AND ITS USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Copper-FIG-1 \(17\)

For TDS measurement, use only room-temperature water. Do not use hot or cold water. It can display up to 999 ppm TDS if the feed water TDS is more than 999 ppm it will show as 10^1 for 1000 ppm and 2×10^1 for 2000 ppm. This TDS meter can not be used for water samples which has TDS > 2000 ppm. There can be a variation of around ‡ 20% between the value that is being measured by handheld TDS meter and other desktop conductivity meter or when measured using conventional gravimetric method for checking the TDS.
