Introduction

The Expedition Explor is a battery-powered loudspeaker that delivers big sound from a compact portable system. With up to 12 hours of battery life you can keep the music going all night long. This all-in-one speaker features a 3-channel mixer for microphones, line sources, instruments, and Bluetooth audio devices .. From playing your favorite songs in the backyard to giving a presentation in the boardroom, Expedition Explor provides superb sound in a highly portable design.

We recommend you keep the following records for reference, as well as a copy of your sales receipt.

With proper care and maintenance, your Explor will operate trouble-free for many years.
Should your speaker ever require servicing, a Return Authorization (RA) number must be obtained before shipping your unit to Samson. Without this number, the unit will not be accepted. Please visit www.samsonlech.com/ra for an RA number prior to shipping your unit. Please retain the original packing materials and, if possible, return the unit in its original carton. If your Expedition Explor was purchased outside of the United States, contact your local distributor for warranty details and service information.

Control Panel Features

COMBO INPUT – XLR-1/4″ input for microphones, line signals, or instruments with active preamps.
**XP0 WIRELESS*** – Connect the Samson XPD digital wireless USB receiver to this input. The wireless receiver is powered by the Explor,so no additional power supply is needed.
REVERB – Used to control the level of CHANNEL 1 reverb.
VOLUME (CHANNEL 1) – Used to control the level of the CHANNEL 1 Mic/Line input.
COMBO INPUT – XLR-1/4″ input used to connect microphones, passive electric guitar or Ii ne level signals.
GTR LINE SWITCH – Controls signal level of CHANNEL 2 input. NOTE; only changes level of 1/4″ input jack. XLR is mic level only.
REVERB – Used to control the level of CHANNEL 2 reverb.
VOLUME (CHANNEL 2) – Used to control the level of the CHANNEL 2 Mic/Guitar/Line input.
AUX IN – For connecting line-level devices using a 3.5mm audio cable.
PAIRING BUTTON – Press this button to enable pairing mode in order to connect to a Bluetooth audio device.
BLUET00TH INDICATOR – The blue color LED displays the Bluetooth status of the Explor system.
VOLUME (CHANNEL 3) – Used to control the level of the AUX/Bluetooth input.
LINE OUT – 1/4″ output connector to link multiple Explor systems together.
BASS/MIO/TREBLE CONTROL KNOBS – These knobs are used to adjust EQ settings to best suit your application.
CHARGE & PEAK LED – Charge LED displays the status of the battery charge level. The Peak LED illuminates red at the level where limiting occurs.
POWER – Switches on the main power.
C INLET – Connect the supplied power cable here.

The USB connector is for the Samson XPD wireless receiver only The connector is not designed to charge smartphones, tablets, or similar devices.

Quick Start

Follow these steps below to quickly start using your Explor portable sound system.

Set the Explor’s power switch to the OFF position, and fully turn all of the VOLUME controls counterclockwise.
If an outlet is available, connect the included power cable to the AC INLET of the speaker, and plug it into an AC socket (wall outlet).
Connect a microphone using a standard XLR cable , line level equipment using a 1/4″ instrument cable, or portable audio device using an 1/8″ cable.
Switch on the Explor power.
While speaking into the microphone or playing music from a line level audio source, slowly raise the channel VOLUME until you have reached the desired level.

NOTE: If not using the channel 1 input, turn the VOLUME control all the way down to keep out any unwanted noise.

Setting a Good Level
Use the Channel VOLUME controls to set the individual volume of your microphone, line level and Bluetooth® devices.

The PEAK light illuminates when the signal sending to the internal amplifier begins to reach a level where limiting occurs to prevent the audio from distorting. If the PEAK light stays on, your mix is too hot and you need to lower the VOLUME controls. It is okay for the PEAK light to occasionally light, however, it should go off quickly and should not constantly stay on.

Pairing with a 8/uetooth® device

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that allows for connectivity between a wide range of devices. The Explor uses Bluetooth to stream high quality audio from your Bluetooth enabled device without the need to connect any cables. In order for your device to work with the Explor, it must first be paired.

Turn all channel volume controls down counterclockwise.
With the Explor and your Bluetooth device powered on; press the PAIR button on the rear panel (CHANNEL 3) of the Exp I or speaker to make the speaker discoverable. The Bluetooth indicator will slowly flash blue.
In the settings of your Bluetooth device, set it to “discover” available devices.
From the Bluetooth device list, select the “Expedition Explor” device.
If your device asks for a passkey, enter digits 0000 (four zeros) and press OK. Some devices may also ask you to accept the connection.
As the Explor is connecting to your device, the Bluetooth indicator will quickly flash blue.
The Explor speaker indicates that pairing is complete when the indicator turns steady blue. You can now stream audio from your device to the Explor.
With the volume control on your Bluetooth device turned up, play some music, and slowly raise the Explor Blue tooth channel 3 volume control unti I you have reached the desired level.

Charging the Battery

The Explor has an internal, rechargeable battery capable of up to 12 hours of continuous audio on a full charge. Even though the system may have some charge when first taken out of the box, we recommend fully charging your Explor before first using the system.

To charge the battery:

Set the power switch to the “OFF” position.
Connect the Explor to an AC power outlet using the included power cord.
Keep the system plugged in until the Battery indicator changes to green, indicating the battery is fully charged.

The Explor utilizes a Lithium Ion battery. When not in use, the battery will slowly selfdischarge.
If you are planning not to use the Explor for a long period of time, it is advised to fully charge the unit before storing. It is also important to charge the unit every six months when not used. This will ensure a healthy battery and extend its life.
If you find that the operation time of the Explor becomes noticeably decreased, even after fully charging, the battery should be replaced. Contact Samson customer service or your local distributor to order a replacement battery. NOTE: follow steps below to swap your battery.

Speaker Placement

The Explor provides three different placement options for your specific situation.

For maximum sound coverage the Explor can be used with a standard 1 %” speaker stand. The speaker should be raised above the heads of the listening audience. Take care when placing the speaker on a stand, to ensure that it is on a level, steady surface and will not tip over.

Take care when placing then Explor in direct sunlight for long periods of time, as this may discolor or damage the unit.

Do not place the speaker on wet surfaces, as it can cause malfunction. If you notice condensation on the unit, dry the speaker before using or storing.

Avoiding Feedback

Feedback is the annoying howling and squealing that can be heard when the microphone picks up sound from the speaker. The sound is then re-amplified back through the speaker again, creating a feedback loop. Follow these steps to minimize the likelihood of feedback:

Avoid pointing the microphone directly at the speaker. In general, it is recommended to position the microphone behind the speaker enclosure. This uses the directional characteristics of the speaker and microphone to your advantage.
Keep the microphone as far from the speaker as possible. This will help achieve isolation between the speaker and the microphone, and allow you to increase the output of the Explor.
Position the microphone as close to the sound source as possible. This will enable the microphone to pick up more direct sound, and allow you to reduce the channel volume control.
Reduce the volume of the speaker.

Quick Start – XPD2 Wireless System

Plug the RXD2 USB receiver into the USB jack labeled XPD WIRELESS. There is a USB A female to USB A male extension cable included. This can be used to prevent damage to RXD2 receiver, if the Explor is knocked over or dropped.
On the handheld transmitter, open the bottom section of the microphone. Place a fresh set of AA (LR6) batteries in the transmitter battery holder, taking care to observe the polarity markings, then screw the cover back on to the lower barrel.
Turn the Channel 3 volume knob on the Explor completely counterclockwise , then turn the POWER switch on the Explor to the ON position.
Turn on the power to the transmitter by pressing and holding Power switch; the indicator LED will light amber.
If the transmitter and receiver have not been previously paired, please plug it into your Explor and press and hold the button on the RXD2 receiver for >5 seconds, until it begins to flash.
Press and hold the Power button on the handheld transmitter for >5 seconds. This will put both components into pairing modes. Once the receiver and transmitter communicate and sync, the LEDs on both units will turn steady amber and will be ready for operation.
Speak or sing into the mic at a normal performance level and raise the CHANNEL 3 WIRELESS VOLUME control until the desired level is reached.

If you hear distortion check the rear panel PEAK LED. If it is lit red , turn down the channel 3 VOLUME on the Explor until it lights only occasionally during loud sounds. If you still hear distortion, open the battery compartment of the transmitter and use the supplied plastic screwdriver to turn the Gain control in the HXDl transmitter slowly counterclockwise until the distortion disappears.
Conversely, if you hear a weak, noisy signal at the desired volume level (and with the channel 3 VOLUME control of the Explor turned fully clockwise), use the supplied plastic screwdriver to turn the Gain control in the HXDl transmitter slowly clockwise until the signal reaches an acceptable level.

HXD1 Handheld Transmitter Controls

Status Indicator – This LED displays the operation mode: Amber: Normal Operation Flashing Amber: Pairing/Low Battery
Power/Pair Switch – Press <5 seconds to turn the unit on or off. Press >5 seconds to enter pairing mode.
Input GAIN Control – This control adjusts the transmitter input sensitivity.
Battery Holder – Insert two standard AA (LR6) batteries here, being sure to observe the plus and minus polarity markings shown. Although rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries can be used, they do not supply adequate current for more than four hours. WARNING: Do not insert the batteries backwards; doing so can cause severe damage to the HXD 1 and will void your warranty.
Plastic Screwdriver – Used to adjust the input GAIN control.

RXD2 Receiver Controls

USB Connector – Plugs into the XPD WIRELESS jack on the rear panel of the Expedition Explor. The receiver can also plug directly into a computer USB port and will be recognized as a USB audio device. The unit passes audio to the device and receives power from the device through this connector.
PAIR Switch – Press and hold for >5 seconds to enter pairing mode.
STATUS Indicator – This LED displays the operation mode:
Amber: Normal Operation
Flashing Amber: Pairing
No Light: Not Pai red; Transmitter out of range
LINE/ Headphone Output – Use this 3 .5mm jack when connecting to an analog line input or headphones for monitoring.

PXD1 Beltpack Transmitter Controls

Input Connector – Connect the input device via the mini-XLR connector. The PXDl is supplied with either a lavalier or headset microphone.
Status Indicator – This LED displays the operation mode:
Amber: Normal Operation
Flashing Amber: Pairing/ Low Battery
Power/Pair Switch – Press for <5 seconds to turn the unit on or off. Press for more than 5 seconds to enter pairing mode.
Input GAIN Control – This control adjusts the transmitter input sensitivity.
Battery Holder – Insert two standard AA (LR6) batteries here, being sure to observe the plus and minus polarity markings shown. WARNING: Do not insert the batteries backwards; doing so can cause severe damage to the PXDl and will void your warranty.
Screwdriver – Used to adjust the input GAIN control.
