Power cable/mains voltage
  • This product is built according to protection class I. It must be powered by a standard earthed mains socket.

  • Before connecting the soldering station, make sure that the mains voltage in your region meets the specifications on the name plate.

  • The mains socket that you use to connect the power cable must be easily accessible.

  • Never unplug the mains plug by pulling on the cable.

  • Do not touch the mains cable or the product if there are any signs of damage, as this may cause a fatal electric shock!
Switch off the mains voltage to the socket containing the power adapter (switch off at the corresponding circuit breaker or remove the fuse, and then switch off at the corresponding RCD protective switch).
You can then unplug the power adapter from the mains socket.

  • If there are any signs of damage, discontinue use immediately. Take the product to a specialist repair centre or dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • A faulty mains cable may be replaced only by the manufacturer, a service engineer or a similarly qualified person in order to prevent hazards.

  • Do not insert any objects into the ventilation slots on the soldering station. This may cause a fatal electric shock!

Operation
  • Never use the soldering iron to heat up liquids.

  • Never solder live electrical components or parts. Always switch off the power before-hand.

  • Do not cover or fasten any items to the soldering station. Otherwise there is a risk of fire.

  • Touching or soldering capacitors (or similar components) or leads/cables that are connected to capacitors may cause a fatal electric shock! Capacitors may stay charged for several hours after you switch off the power supply!

  • Keep your workstation clean.

  • Ensure that there is sufficient lighting.

  • Ensure proper ventilation during soldering. Solder and flux vapours can be harmful to your health.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after working with solder. This is particularly important when using leadbased solder.

  • Do not put soldering alloys into your mouth. Do not eat or drink during soldering.

  • Wear suitable protective clothing and safety goggles when soldering. Liquid/splashing solder may cause serious burns or eye damage.

  • Never use soldering flux, acid or similar aids when soldering. Such materials result in poor soldering joints. They may also damage the tip of the soldering iron.

  • When using the soldering iron, do not touch any other part of the soldering iron apart from the handle.
Otherwise there is a danger of burning!

  • Always solder on non-flammable surfaces. Protect other materials nearby from damage through heat.

  • Place the soldering iron in holder when not in use.

Operation

Attaching/changing the nozzle

Plug one of the three nozzles attachments all the way onto the hot air nozzle. The smaller the attachment, the more exact you may work (e.g. on a thickly equipped circuit board).

Risk of burns!
Never change a hot nozzle attachment. Wait until the hot air nozzle and the nozzle attachment have cooled down completely.
Do not use any tool for changing to avoid damage to the nozzle attachment.
You may also use the hot air nozzle without an attachment, for example if you want to heat up a larger area.

Installation site and connection

Protect heat-sensitive surfaces with a suitable cover.
Never place the product on valuable furniture surfaces, floors or carpets.
Maintain a sufficient distance from combustible or flammable objects (e.g. curtains).

  • Place the product on a horizontal, stable, sufficiently large surface.
  • Insert the holder all the way into the slot on the right side of the station.
  • Insert the hot air nozzle into the holder so that it cannot fall out, see image on the right.

Risk of fire!
Make sure that there is enough space above and behind the hot air nozzle. Never set the station directly in front of other objects to help ensure this.
When you place the hot air nozzle in the bracket, hot air exits for another 90 seconds before the fan stops.
Installation site and connection

  • Connect the plug of the soldering iron to the appropriate socket on the station. The plug fits only in one direction. Do not use any force. Secure the connection with the cap nut.
  • Place the soldering iron in the soldering iron holder.
  • Connect the mains plug to a standard mains socket.
Switching on and off
  • Switch on the station via the mains switch on the rear (switch position I = on). After switching on, OFF appears on both displays.
  • Press the red switch on the front of the station to start the heating process (soldering iron = left / hot air nozzle = right)

When the hot air nozzle is in the holder, it is in standby mode. SLP (sleep mode) appears on the display.
The heating process starts only when you remove the hot air nozzle from the holder.
When you replace the hot air nozzle in the bracket, the heating process is stopped and the fan stops after90 seconds.
If the message EEE appears on the left display, turn off the station. Disconnect the soldering iron and reconnect it with the station. Make sure that the plug is connected correctly and that the cap nut is hand tight. Turn the product back on. If the message EEE persists, the soldering iron is defective and must be replaced.

  • To stop the heating process, press the red switch again. OFF appears on the display.
  • After use, switch off the product with the power switch on the rear (switch position O = off).
Setting the temperature

The temperature for the soldering iron and the hot air nozzle can be adjusted independently from one another.

  • Press the + button to increase the temperature by 1 degree.
Press the – button to reduce the temperature by 1 degree.
Press and hold the button to fast forward.

  • With the slide switch, you can switch the display between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Setting the air volume

You can set the air volume of the hot air nozzle with the knob.

  • Turn the knob to the right (clockwise) to increase the air volume.
  • Turn the knob to the left (counter clockwise) to decrease the air volume

Soldering

Soldering iron
  • Select the temperature according to the soldering process you want to perform. In any case, the temperature must be higher than the melting point of the solder.
To ensure that the solder melts quickly and flows smoothly, the temperature of the soldering station should be set to at least 50 °C higher than the melting point of the solder.

Soldering for excessively long periods may damage many types of components due to prolonged heat exposure. It is therefore advisable to select a higher soldering tip temperature to keep the soldering process as short as possible.
However, selecting an excessive temperature can also cause problems (e.g. damage components).

  • If you need to heat large quantities of solder (e.g. for a large soldering joint or a soldering joint that dissipates heat, such as a cooling plate), you can set a higher temperature.
  • After setting the desired temperature, the product requires a few seconds until the soldering tip reaches the desired temperature.
  • As soon as the temperature is reached, remove the soldering iron from the soldering iron holder.

Risk of burns!
Only hold the soldering iron by the plastic handle. Never touch the hot tip or the metal shaft.

  • The solder should melt instantly upon contact with the soldering tip. Rising smoke is caused by evaporating flux contained inside the solder.
  • For larger soldering joints, increase the temperature to speed up the soldering process.

Only use the highest temperature setting for as long as necessary to avoid overloading the soldering tip.

  • Reduce the temperature of the soldering iron during breaks. This saves energy and prolongs the lifespan of the soldering tip.

  • Always place the soldering iron into the soldering iron holder when it is heating up and cooling down and when you are not soldering.

  • Make sure that the soldering tip is well coated with tin when taking breaks or before switching the soldering station off.

  • Ensure that the soldering contacts on the workpiece are clean. Only use solder designed for electronic work. Acidic solder may damage the soldering tip or the work piece.

  • Heat the soldering joint with soldering tip and apply the solder at the same time. Remove the solder from the soldering joint. Then, remove the soldering tip. Complete the soldering process quickly to avoid damaging the workpiece (e.g. dislocated conductors or overheating components).

  • Allow the soldering joint to cool down. Depending on the size of the soldering joint, it may take 1–2 seconds for the solder to harden. During this time, do not move the soldered component to prevent the formation of a so-called cold soldering joint.
The solder joint has a dull silver appearance, does not provide good electrical contact nor mechanical fixation.
A correctly soldered joint should shine in a similar way to chrome.

  • Clean any flux residue from the soldering tip occasionally (e.g. with a damp sponge). To do this, briefly wipe the soldering tip.

Do not press the tip into the damp sponge. Never hold the soldering tip against the sponge for too long to prevent damage to the sponge.
Ensure that the sponge is sufficiently damp. Never clean the soldering tip with a dry sponge!
As an alternative to the sponge, use a separately available dry cleaner.
Mechanical damage to the soldering tip destroys the protective coating and reduces its lifespan. Do not clean the soldering tip with sharp objects or a metal brush.

  • Remove any flux residue from the soldering tip before soldering. Then reapply tin to the soldering tip. Apply a small amount of tin to the soldering tip, ensuring that the tin forms an even layer on the tip. This prevents corrosion on the soldering tip.
Then place the soldering iron into the soldering iron holder. Switch off the soldering station.

Risk of burns!
It takes about 10–15 minutes for the soldering iron to cool down completely. Do not touch the soldering tip or holder during this time.

Hot air nozzle

Proceed as described in the previous section above and also observe the following notes:

Risk of burns!
Touch the hot air nozzle only by the plastic handle. Never touch the hot nozzle or the metal shaft.
Never point the hot air jet toward your body.
Risk of fire and explosion!
Never point the hot air jet toward sensitive materials, flammable objects, gases, etc

Align the hot air flow from the nozzle to the location where the soldering process is to be carried out. The distance should not be too great (otherwise the hot air will not sufficiently heat the soldering tin). A short distance, however, must also be avoided. Otherwise, there may be an excessive heating of the component.

DE soldering

  • If the component you wish to desolder is defective (for example, a large IC), you can point the nozzle directly at the component and not at the pins. Especially in the case of components with connection pins on each side, desoldering may be practically impossible.
  • When desoldering, always make sure that the conductor paths are not heated up, otherwise they may detach from the carrier material.
  • Please remove the IC with pincers or tweezers as soon as the soldering tin is melted.
  • After you have removed the component, you can remove the remaining soldering tin with a desoldering suction pump (not included)

Use as a hot air blower

  • The hot air nozzle can also be used for heating suitable objects, for example, for shrinking shrink tubes.
  • Depending on the size of the object, the hot air nozzle can be operated with or without the nozzle. Make sure when heating that no surrounding components/objects can be damaged.

In the case of improper handling or heating of unsuitable objects, there is danger of fire / explosion!
Never point the hot air jet toward your body, risk of burns/injury!
Heating objects may cause toxic and harmful gases to form. Therefore, always ensure sufficient ventilation.

Changing the soldering tip

Use a suitable soldering tip depending on the soldering job at hand.

You can find suitable accessories on the product related website at www.conrad.com. Enter the order number into the search bar.
Only use soldering tips that are recommended for use with the soldering station.
The use of other soldering tips can lead to a false temperature reading (the actual temperature of the soldering tip does not match the temperature display). In addition, the heating element can be damaged.
This leads to a loss of the warranty.

When working on small components, use a very fine soldering tip. However, when soldering on larger components, a soldering tip with a broader/flat tip should be used. A larger soldering tip can transfer more heat so the soldering process goes more quickly.

The soldering tip is subjected to a mechanical and thermal load during use. Over time, the soldering tip will become blunt (especially with very fine soldering tips), meaning that you will not be able to solder precisely on small components.
The lifespan of the soldering tip depends on several factors. For example, high soldering temperatures significantly reduce the lifespan.

Proceed as follows to change the soldering tip:

  • Turn off the soldering station and let the soldering iron cool down completely.
  • Loosen the knurled cap nut on the metal shaft of the soldering iron. Remove the cap nut and the metal sleeve.

The heating/cooling process may cause the cap nut to become very tight.

If so, loosen the cap nut with a pair of pliers. However, do not use any force, as this may damage the heating element. This leads to a loss of the warranty.

  • Remove the soldering tip from the heating element.
  • Install a new soldering tip on the heating element.
  • Replace the metal sleeve and the cap nut. Tighten the fittings manually. Do not use any force when screwing tight.

Care and cleaning

Never use aggressive detergents, rubbing alcohol or other chemical solutions, as these could damage the casing or stop the product from functioning properly.

  • Always disconnect the product from the power supply before cleaning it. Disconnect the mains plug from the mains socket.
  • Before cleaning, let all components cool down completely.
  • Use a dry, lint-free cloth to clean the station.
  • Do not use a file or sandpaper to clean the soldering tip. This may damage the soldering tip.
  • Clean the soldering tip with a damp sponge to remove flux and solder residue.
  • Before turning off the product, the soldering tip must be well coated in tin. This prevents corrosion on the soldering tip and prolongs its lifespan.
