Safety instructions

ATTENTION! This device must only be operated by a qualified specialist.
(A qualified specialist is a person whose competence is officially confirmed by relevant documents, who has the necessary knowledge and experience to work safely with this device and is authorized to work with circuits with the appropriate voltage class.)

Use of this device requires compliance with all of the applicable laws and safety regulations. During operation, some parts of the tester are energized with a dangerous voltage level. Failure to follow the safety instructions could result in serious personal injury and equipment damage.

The device is designed in accordance with the safety requirements of the international electrical safety standard EN61010-1; Cat. III, 1000V; Cat. IV, 600V for electronic test instruments. To avoid electric shock or personal injury, strictly follow these safety precautions:

  • Do not use the device on circuits where the voltage to ground exceeds 300V DC or AC.
  • Do not connect the test lead or grounding pin if the surface of the instrument or your hands are wet.
  • Do not touch the test lead or grounding pin while measuring.
  • Use extreme caution when measuring voltages above 30V AC (RMS), 42V AC (peak), or 60V DC, it is life-threatening.
  • Use only properly functioning probes and test leads with intact insulation. Keep your fingers behind the safety guards on the probes.
  • Do not use the device in environments with explosive gases, vapors, or high humidity.
  • Disconnect the test leads before opening the battery compartment. Do not use the device when it is disassembled.
  • Do not open the device. Never attempt to operate a damaged device or a device with damaged electrical parts!
  • Do not ground yourself when taking measurements. Avoid contact with possible ground sources.
  • Follow local and national safety regulations. Use personal protective equipment when working with exposed live parts.

Main functions

Measurement results memory function
The device is capable of storing up to 100 measurement records. This data will be retained even if the power is turned off.
Press the MEMO button (10) to save the measurement results. When 100 records have been saved, the newly saved history record will overwrite the oldest one.

View saved measurement results
Press the READ button (9) to enter data viewing mode. The READ symbol will appear on the display. If there is data in the current memory cell, the USED symbol will also be displayed.
Use the (5) or (6) buttons to navigate through the device’s memory cells.
In data viewing mode, press the CLR button (8) and delete data from the current memory cell.
Press the READ (9) button to exit the mode.

Relative value measurement
Press the REL ▼ button (6) to enter relative measurement mode. The REL symbol will appear on the display. The current reading is stored in memory as a reference value. Subsequently, the display will show the difference between the measured and reference values,
i.e., Current reading = Measured value – Reference value.
Press the REL ▼ (6) button to exit the mode.

Relative measurement mode is not available when measuring ground resistance, in viewing and saving modes, or when the current reading exceeds the limit value.

Maximum, minimum, and average values
Press the MAX/MIN/AVG button (4) to enter the extreme and average values display mode. The MAX icon will appear up on the display and the display will show the maximum value for the current measurement session. Press the MAX/MIN/AVG button (4) again to display the minimum value (MIN icon on the screen). Press the MAX/MIN/AVG button (4) one more time to display the average value (AVG icon on the screen).
Press and hold the MAX/MIN/AVG button (4) for 3 seconds to exit the mode.

Backlight
Press the ▲ button (5) to turn the backlight on/off.

Auto power turn-off
Auto power turn-off function is active by default (the symbol is displayed). After 10 minutes without any key operation, the device will turn off automatically to save battery energy. A beep will sound before the device turns off. Press any button to activate the device.
To cancel the automatic turn-off function, press and hold the ▲ button (5) when turning the device on. The symbol is not displayed when the automatic turn-off function is cancelled.

Measurement mode

Voltage measurement relative to ground
Turn the knob switch (7) to the ~VE position and insert the test leads into terminals E and P/S. Connect the other ends of the wires in parallel to the voltage source or load for measurement. The measurement result will be shown on the display.

Resistance measurement using the bi-pole method
This method does not require the use of an auxiliary ground electrode. An existing grounding electrode with a known minimum grounding resistance is used as an auxiliary grounding electrode, e.g., metal pipes in the ground, general grounding of the electrical network, or a building lightning rod.

Ground voltage measurement
Before measuring ground resistance, it is necessary to measure the voltage to ground (see the “Voltage measurement relative to ground” section). If voltage is present and greater than 10V, the ground resistance measurement will contain a large error. Turn the power off to the object being measured and take the measurement after reducing the voltage on the ground.

Ground resistance measurement
Connect the black and green test leads to terminals Е and P/S, respectively. Turn the knob switch (7) to the RE 2POLE position and connect the device to the object being measured as shown in the diagram above. Press the MEASURE button (11) to start a measurement. The MEASURE button (11) light will start flashing. When the measurement is completed, a beep will sound and the button light will go off. The measured Re value will appear on the display.

If the measured value exceeds the limit, the display will show > LIMIT 4000Ω (The measured resistance exceeds 4000Ω), indicating that the auxiliary ground resistance is too high.

Calculation of the true ground resistance value
The measured value Re is the sum of the auxiliary ground resistance re and the true ground resistance Rx.
Therefore, Rx (True Ground Resistance) = Re (Measured Value) – re (Auxiliary Ground Resistance).

Ground resistance measurement using the tri-pole method (precise measurements)
The tri-pole method for measuring ground resistance is the potential difference method. The potential difference method is based on calculating the grounding resistance Rx from the potential drop V between the measured ground electrode Е and the potential electrode P/S when current flows from the device to the current electrode C/H.

Drive the auxiliary ground electrode P and C in a straight line from the ground electrode being measured at a distance of 5–10m from each other, as shown in the diagram above. Connect the black, red and green test leads to terminals Е, P/S, and C/H, respectively. Turn the knob switch (7) to the RE 3POLE (Tri-pole method) position. Press the MEASURE button (11) to start a measurement. The MEASURE button (11) light will start flashing. When the measurement is completed, a beep will sound and the button light will turn off. The measured Rx value will appear on the display.

  • Auxiliary electrodes should be driven as deep as possible into damp soil. If the soil is dry, rocky, or sandy, moisten the soil with water where the electrodes are driven in.
  • When measuring on concrete, wet the auxiliary electrodes with water or place wet towels on them.
  • If the measured value exceeds the limit, the display will show > LIMIT 4000Ω (The measured resistance exceeds 4000Ω), indicating that the resistance of the auxiliary ground electrode C is too high. Check the wire connections. Tangled or touching wires may result in a measurement error. Before measuring, make sure the wires are separated.
  • If the resistance of the auxiliary electrodes is high, the measurement result will contain a large error. For more accurate measurements, drive the P and C electrodes into the wettest areas of the soil and ensure that all of the connections are secure.
