OPERATION

Operation

|

  • Place the grinder on an even, water-resistant and stable surface.
  • Never place the machine on hot surfaces.
  • Make sure that the local main supply voltage corresponds to the information given on the type plate on the bottom of the grinder.
  • Plug the grinder into a grounded socket only and do not leave it on unattended.
  • Do not roll or bend the power cord.
  • Do not use an extension cord / do not use a multiple socket.

---|---
| Before starting to operate the grinder make sure

  • that the grinder is switched off
  • the electrical cord is not plugged into the outlet

Attach the bean hopper. First, be sure not to press the bean hopper entirely down so the lock slide is within easy reach.|
---|---
Fill the bean hopper with roasted coffee/espresso beans. Open the lock slide. Push the bean hopper further down into the final position. Plug the electrical cord into an outlet and switch the grinder on. The grinder is now operational.|

Important: Never fill the bean hopper with already ground coffee. Never place a finger or other items into the coffee bean chute, nor the ground coffee spout funnel.

| Emergency Stop Operation:
The grinder may be stopped immediately by activating the On/Off switch

Adjusting the grind

The grinding degree is preset. You can change the grind to achieve an optimum grinding which fulfils your needs. The grinding degree can be modified as follows:

  1. Switch on the grinder by operating the power switch.
  2. Press the contact spring with the filter holder
  3. Unlock the grinding scale by pushing the adjustment clip on the left side of the grinder.
  • You can achieve a finer grind by turning the scale clockwise.
  • You can achieve a coarser grind by turning the scale counter-clockwise.

Grinding degree (Stepwise adjustment):

| When adjusting, we suggest to increase or decrease a few steps at a time until achieving the desired grind. The coffee can react differently depending on the weather. Choose a finer grind in dry weather and a coarser grind in humid weather.

GRINDING

Grinding

Grinding starts when the contact spring is pressed. Grinding stops when the portafilter is pulled away from the spring.|
---|---

CLEANING

A regular and thorough cleaning of the grinder avoids fats and oils in the coffee negatively affecting thecoffee aroma.
Clean the grinding burrs and the theads very carefully. If there are coffee residues left in the thread, the grinder cannot be adjusted properly.

| Important: Always switch off the machine (power switch in position “0”) and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the grinder.
---|---

  1. Clean the empty bean hopper inside and outside with a damp cloth.

  2. Dry the bean hopper with a soft, clean cloth.

  3. Also clean the grinder housing with a damp and with a dry cloth.
With the C-Manuale 54 the stainless steel spout can be removed for cleaning. Hold the spout with the finger from below and pull it firmly towards you.
The spout is then loose enough from the rails and can be removed completely. Clean the coffee residues from the spout and the area around the antistatic grid with a brush.
After cleaning, carefully reassemble the spout.
To do this, push it back onto the rails in the upper area and then snap it into the lower area.

  4. Remove the grind adjustment ring from the body by pressing down on the adjustment clip and turning the ring counterclockwise.

  5. Carry out the mounting in reverse order..
    | When reassembling, make sure that the grind adjustment ring straight and correct on the thread before screwing it back in place. If there is coffee residue between the two threads, the grind adjustment ring is difficult or impossible to screw on.
    ---|---

  6. Reconnect the power cord of the grinder.

TIPPS AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Should a bean become stuck in the grinding mechanism, you may fix this yourself as follows:

  1. Switch the grinder off (switch in off position). Unplug the power cord.
  2. Take off the bean hopper and remove (with the vacuum cleaner) the remaining coffee beans from the grinding mechanism. Note the current grind setting on the number scale.
  3. Loosen the upper burr by turning it counter-clockwise by approx. two full turns.
  4. Reconnect the power cord and switch on the grinder. (Do not reach into the grinding mechanism.) The grinding mechanism operates again.
  5. Switch off the grinder again and disconnect the power cord to interrupt the current entry.
  6. Now turn back the upper burr clockwise by approx. two full turns.
  7. Reconnect the power cord, switch on the grinder and replace the bean hopper. The grinder is ready for use again.

In case the coffee shaft of your grinder is plugged due to too fine a grind (depending on temperature, humidity, fat and oil content of the respective coffee), please take the following steps to resolve the problem:

  1. Switch the grinder off, switch in „off“ position. Unplug the power cord.
  2. Close the lock slide of the bean hopper, so that no further beans can drop into the grinding area of the grinder.
  3. Take off the coffee spout of the grinder and remove the grounds which have plugged the grid.
  4. Note the current grind setting on the number scale. Turn the grind adjustment ring counterclockwise, so  the beans remaining in the grinding section can pass through without resistance.
  5. Plug the power chord of the grinder back in and turn on the grinder.
  6. Start the grinding process as usual by pressing the contact spring. The remaining coffee grounds should now come out of the chute easily. Unplug the power cord. Manually clean the entire chute with a suitable tool again. Activate the grind switch until no further grounds come out. If necessary, manually clean the spout again. Reassemble the spout.
  7. Open the slide bar of the bean hopper.
  8. Re-calibrate the grind setting with the grinding time as required during the next few grinds. A coarser grind can be compensated by using more ground coffee or by tamping harder.
Problem Possible Cause Troubleshooting

The grinder motor is working, but no ground coffee is falling out of the spout.| The lock slide of the bean hopper is closed.| Open the lock slide of the bean hopper.
The coffee shaft is blocked with coffee powder.| see instructions above.

The grinder motor produces a humming sound, does not operate, does not grind any beans.

| The grind is too fine: The grinding burrs touch and mutually block each other.| Adjust the grind to a coarser degree.
The coffee shaft is blocked with coffee powder. The coffee is blocking the motor.| Clean the coffee shaft, adjust the grind to a coarser degree.
Grind cannot be adjusted.| Thread is blocked with coffee.| Clean the thread.
Sparse coffee dispensing from the espresso machine, only drop by drop| The grind is too fine| Adjust the grind to a coarser degree.
There is too much ground coffee.| Use less ground coffee.
→ Reduce grinding time.
Too much tamping pressure| Use less pressure when tamping.
Little or no crema on top of the coffee| The grind is not fine enough.| Adjust the grind to a finer degree. User more pressure when tamping.
The coffee is old.| Use fresh coffee.
The shower screen is dirty.| Clean the shower screen.
Ambient and humidity conditions have changed.| Adjust the grind accordingly.
Foam instead of crema| The coffee beans are improper| Use another coffee bean.
The setting of the coffee grinder isnot suited for the coffee mixture in use| Adjust the coffee grinder (When changing the coffee beans, changing the grind may also benecessary.)
