Water supply connection

Important

Make sure that the machine is on a water-resistant surface in case of water spillage or leakage. Make sure that the fixed water connection of your machine is connected to a potable water supply having an operating pressure ranging between 0 and 1.5 bars. We recommend to use a pressure regulator and a shut- off valve in case the operating pressure exceeds 1.5 bars or frequently fluctuates. The shut-off valve should be easily accessible, so that the water flow may be stopped at any time. Make sure that the shut-off valve is closed or turned off when the machine is not in use to prevent any possible water leakage.

Caution!

High water pressure can result in damages to property and machine. Please make sure the water pressure does not exceed 2 bar.

Machine in use with direct water connection

The water connecting hose is to be connected to the water supply adapter under the machine (image 1). Always use the hose supplied with the machine to connect the machine to the water supply system, even if an old hose is already present. When using the machine with direct water supply, the valve has to be turned towards water supply adapter (image 1). The water supply adapter is located in the rear part of the bottom panel (image 1). Additionally, place the switch behind the drip tray into position “1” (image 2). Please make sure that your water tap is always open during water-connection usage so that the machine does not run out of water!

Important

  • Do not leave the machine switched on or unattended when not in use.
  • Make sure to close the shut off valve of the water connection and to switch off the electric main switch or to disconnect the power plug when the machine is not in use.
  • If you will not be using the machine for an extended period of time, we recommend emptying the machine by letting the water run out via the brew group. To refill, proceed as described in the initial start-up (section 5).

Machine in use with water tank

When using the machine with water tank, please turn the valve to the front side of the machine (image 3). Additionally, place the switch behind the drip tray into position “0” (image 4).

Important

  • Please make sure that only a service agent or similarly qualified person connects the machine to the water supply and installs the pressure regulator and shut off valve.
  • To avoid calcification of the machine a water-softener is recommended.
  • The machine may only be descaled by your service agent or similarly qualified person because a partial disassembly of the boiler and the tubing may be necessary to prevent the system from being blocked by lime residues. A late descaling can cause substantial damage to the machine.

Advice for machines with a fixed water connection:

The residual water is disposed off periodically by emptying out the water drip tray. With machines featuring a fixed water connection, you have the option to install a direct connection to your drainage system. The required articles (drip tray with drainage outlet, drainage attachment, drainage hose) are not included with delivery and have to be ordered separately from your service representative.

FIRST USE

Read the instruction manual carefully prior to operating the machine.

Prior to starting the machine, check if:

  • the steam and hot water valves are closed.
  • the machine is switched off. (Power switch in the vertical position.)
  • the power cord is disconnected.
  • the drip tray is inserted accurately.
  • the machine is placed on a water-resistant surface.

Now you can start up your machine:

Water tank machine or machine in use with water tank

  1. Open the cup warmer tray. Take out the water tank and rinse it thoroughly.
  2. Fill the water tank with fresh water consisting of minimal amounts of lime, place it back into the water tank guides and close the cup warmer tray.
  3. Plug the machine into an electrical outlet. Turn the power switch to “1”. The machine is now on.
  4. The green signal lamp lights up.
  5. The pump will fill the boiler of the machine with fresh water.
  6. As soon as the boiler is filled, the pump will stop; the orange signal lamp is now on. As soon as the fresh water falls to a certain level in the water tank, the machine switches off and the orange signal lamp turns off. Refill with fresh water and the machine will restart and heat up automatically.
  7. A large amount of water is required to fill the boiler for the first time, so the water tank will have to be refilled with fresh water.
  8. Wait until the boiler pressure gauge indicates approx. 1.0-1.25 bar or 120° C (248°F) has been reached.
  9. A manual “boiler ventilation” is not necessary because the TECHNIKA V Profi PID is equipped with a professional depression valve that ventilates the boiler during the heating-up phase.
  10. Move the group lever into the upper position and dispense approx. 500 ml of water. This way, the heat exchanger will be filled with water and the circulation of the water in the thermosyphon system begins.
  11. Move the group lever into the lower position. Refill the water tank.
  12. The machine is now ready for use. Put the cups on the cup heater tray in order to preheat them.
  • If the first filling does not work, connect the machine to the water supply (see the following chapter). After the first filling, you can switch the machine back to water tank and continue to operate the machine with it.
  • Before preparing the first coffee, please rinse the machine by extracting about 2-3 water tank fillings from the brew group and the hot water wand. When the machine is switched off, more hot water can be dispensed. See also chapter 6.5 Dispensing of hot water

Machine in use with direct water connection

  1. Plug the machine into an electrical outlet. Turn the power switch to “1”. The machine is now on.
  2. The green signal lamp lights up. The pump begins to fill the boiler of the machine with fresh water.
  3. As soon as boiler has filled, no more pump noise will be heard; the orange signal lamp is on now and the machine will heat up automatically.
  4. Wait until the boiler pressure gauge indicates approx. 1.0-1.25 bar or 120° C (248°F) has been reached.
  5. A manual “boiler ventilation” is not necessary because the TECHNIKA V Profi PID is equipped with a professional depression valve that ventilates the boiler during the heating-up phase.
  6. Move the group lever into the upper position and dispense approx. 500 ml of water. This way, the heat exchanger will be filled with water and the circulation of the water in the thermosyphon system begins.
  7. Move the group lever into the lower position.
  8. The machine is now ready for use. Put the cups on the cup heater tray in order to preheat them.

Before preparing the first coffee, please rinse the machine by extracting about 5-8 l from the brew group and the hot water wand. When the machine is switched off, more hot water can be dispensed. See also chapter 6.5 Dispensing of hot water.

The TECHNIKA V Profi PID has a fuse to prevent the machine from overfilling. If the machine does not heat up when using it for the first time or when dispensing large quantities of water through the hot water valve, please switch the machine off and on again. Please note that the portafilter, drip tray and water tank are not suitable for the dishwasher.

USE OF THE MACHINE

Preparation of the machine

The switched-off machine is to be placed into operation as follows:

Machine in use with water tank or with direct water connection

  • Use with water tank: Make sure that there is enough water in the water tank. Fill if necessary Use with direct water connection: Make sure that there is enough pressure in the direct water supply connection.
  • Turn the machine on (power switch in position “1”).
  • Wait until the pressure gauge indicates approx. 1.0-1.25 bar.
  • Depending on the ambient temperature, the heat-up phase is approx. 15 minutes.
  • The machine is now ready for use.
  • Insert the portafilter and move the brew group lever into the upper position. Release some hot water so the portafilter will be heated.

It is recommended to leave the portafilter in the brew group keeping it warm for optimum temperature for coffee brewing.

Manual adjustment of the brewing pressure

Important

The brewing pressure of the machine can be adjusted manually without opening the machine through an adjusting screw at the bottom of the machine. This adjustment must be carried out by expert specialists.

PID-display functions

The various programming options of the PID controller are explained below.

Programming the temperature

The PID control allows you to program the steam temperature and thus the pressure inside the boiler for steaming milk and to modify the extraction temperature of the coffee from the brew group.

Technically, it is possible to set the boiler temperature on the PID between 120° C and 127°C (between 176°F and 261°F).

We recommend a temperature setting on the PID of 124°C at about 1.25 bar, which corresponds to an outlet temperature of about 94°C (121°F). If the temperature is set lower, there will not be enough pressure to foam milk

Please note that after changing the steam temperature on the display, it takes a certain amount of time for the corresponding temperature to be reached on the brewing group.

To adjust the temperature please follow the instructions below:

1

|

Switch the machine on in order to activate the boiler. The temperature of the boiler is of no importance in programming. The heater is inactive during programming.

There is the option to turn the PID display off: Press the + button until the display turns off. A dot will appear on the display, which indicates that the machine is still turned on. The display will be turned on again by pressing the + button once more.

Preparing coffee

Use the portafilter with 1 spout and the corresponding filter (1 cup) for the preparation of 1 cup. Use the portafilter with 2 spouts and the big filter (2 cups) for the preparation of 2 cups. Make sure that the filter is firmly locked into the portafilter. Fill the ground coffee with the respective grind for espresso into the filter. (The marking inside the filter basket can help you find the right amount of coffee.) Compress the ground coffee with the tamper. A tamping pressure of approx. 20 kg is recommended. Thus the ground coffee is evenly compacted. Clamp the portafilter firmly into the brew group. Place the cup under the spout of the portafilter (for the preparation of 2 cups, put 1 cup under each spout). Now move the brew lever into the upper position to start the brewing process. The timer on the PID-display indicates the brewing time in seconds. In general, the brewing time should be around 20 to 25 seconds. The volume for a single espresso is circa 20 to 30 ml. Place the brew lever back into the original position once the desired volume is reached.
The remaining pressure/water will be discharged into the drip tray by the lower part of the brew groupe cylinder.
The pump pressure can be read on the pump pressure gauge. After the brewing process, the gauge may still indicate pressure. Only when preparing another cup of coffee will the build-up of pressure be visible again.

Caution!

If the group lever is not moved into the lower position properly, hot water and grounds will squirt out of the brew group when taking out the portafilter. This may cause injury. Only freshly ground coffee allows for an optimal coffee result. Therefore, use a professional coffee grinder. In our assortment, you will find several professional and compact coffee grinders. We recommend using a stainless steel tamper with a diameter of 58 mm for optimum tamping.

Dispensing of hot water

  1. Place an adequate water container (with a heat-insulated handle) under the hot water dispenser. It is recommended to switch off the machine (position 0) to stop cold water from being pumped into the boiler while dispensing. To dispense hot water (e. g. for tea) activate the hot water lever.
  2. After dispensing water, switch the machine on (position 1) again. The boiler will be filled with fresh water automatically.
The machines does not necessarily need to be switched off to dispense hot water. However, when the machine is switched off, a larger quantityof hot water can be dispensed than when it is on. Ensure that the hot water nozzle of the dispenser is placed into the water container in order to avoid injuries due to hot water spray or spillage.

Dispensing of steam

The TECHNIKA V Profi PID is able to generate large amounts of steam in order to heat or froth beverages, e. g. milk or punch. It is a professional and compact espresso coffee machine with an enormous steam volume. Therfore, within a few seconds you can prepare milk froth. Please pay attention to the instructions below. Do not bring the milk to a boil, otherwise frothing milk will not be possible.

  • Important: In order to get the best result when frothing milk, open the steam valve by activating the steam lever for approx. 5 seconds to release the condensation water in the steam wand.
  • Immerse the steam nozzle (at the end of the steam dispenser) in the liquid.
  • Re-open the steam valve.
  • Heat and/or froth the liquid.
  • After frothing or heating, release the steam into the drip tray to keep the holes of the steam nozzle clean.

Risk of injury
Always keep the steam nozzle underneath the surface of the liquid while heating or frothing in order to avoid being sprayed.
Important
After every application clean the steam nozzle and the steam dispenser with a non-abrasive, damp cloth; to remove possible liquid residues.
Risk of injury
Avoid skin contact with the steam dispenser while cleaning!

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Regular and thorough care is very important for the performance, longevity and safety of your machine.

Caution!

Always switch off the machine (power switch in lower position), disconnect the power cord and let the machine cool down to room temperature (for at least 30 minutes) before cleaning. Never submerse the machine in water. There is a risk of electric shock

General cleaning

Daily cleaning:

Portafilter, filters, water tank, drip tray, drip plate of the drip tray, measuring spoon and tamper require daily cleaning. Clean with warm water and/or with a food safe detergent.

  • Please note that portafilters, drip tray and water tank are not suitable for the dishwasher.

Clean the shower screen and the group gasket in the lower part of the group and remove visible deposits without disassembling the parts. Cleaning as necessary: Clean the steam and hot water valve after every use. Clean the body when the machine is switched off and cold. Depending on usage, please refresh the boiler water every 1 – 2 weeks by operating the pump switch and extracting hot water from the hot water wand.

  • Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning.
  • Never use abrasive or chloric detergents!

Empty the water drip tray regularly and do not wait until it is full.

Brew group cleaning

A ECM brew group cleaner is available at your specialised dealer. With this detergent, you can clean and degrease the group very easily. The cleaning is carried out using the blind filter included in delivery. The group cleaning can be carried out after approx. 90 – 150 cups.

Follow the instructions as noted below:

  1. Heat up the machine.
  2. Place the blind filter into the portafilter.
  3. Put approx. 3 – 5g of the group cleaning powder into the blind filter.
  4. Clamp the portafilter into the brew group.
  5. Operate the group lever. The blind filter will fill with water.
  6. Let the detergent react, moving the group lever into the middle position, approx. 45°. (Do not move it into the lower position.)
  7. Move the lever into the lower position after approx. 20 seconds. This way, the fats and oils can be discharged by the infusion cylinder.
  8. Repeat points 5-7 several times, until only clear water is discharged by the infusion cylinder.
  9. Rinse the portafilter and the blind filter with fresh water. Then replace it.
  10. Operate the group lever for approx. 40 seconds. Then move it back into the lower position.
  11. Remove the portafilter and repeat point 10. After this, the brew group is ready for use.
  12. Place the filter for 1 or 2 cups into the portafilter.

Caution!

Beware of hot spray while cleaning the group.

  • To stow away the blind filter, you will find under the drip tray, at the rear left, a mounting bracket therefor

In case you programmed the cleaning mode, the“CLn” will disappear on the display after having operated the brew group lever 10 times. The counter will then restart until the next cleaning advice.
If you clean the brew group to often with cleaner, it may start squeaking. Don´t clean it to often with cleaner, you will degrease all the moving parts and they will wear out quickly. It´s better if you clean the brew group from time to time without cleaner.

Maintenance

Caution!

Make sure that the machine is disconnected from the mains during maintenance and when replacing individual parts.

Replacing the group gasket and the shower screen

  1. Switch off the machine (power switch in position“0”) and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Let the machine cool down to room temperature.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Problem Possible Cause Troubleshooting

First use with water tank: pump noise – the boilers are not filled

| ****

The system is completely dry, the pump cannot deliver the water.

| Connect the machine to the water supply for initial filling (see

chapter 5.2) to fill the boilers with the line pressure.

The machine is switched on, but the machine does not work.

| The orange signal lamp is switched off, there is not enough

water in the water tank.

| ****

Refill water.

Water was refilled, the orange control lamp is switched off.

| Switch on/off the machine. Make sure that the floater in the water tank is in the correct position. (The side of the floater with the magnet point must face towards the inside of the machine. The floater itself must

be inserted with the magnet point on the lower part of the floater.)

The water tank is not fixed

properly.

| Fix the water tank properly.
Machine in use with direct water connection but switch in

position “0” (=position water

tank). Machine does not take in water.

| ****

Switch to position “1” (=position

direct water connection).

Little or no crema on the top of the coffee

| ****

The grind is not fine enough

| Use a finer grind.

Tamp the ground coffee more firmly.

Reduce the brewing pressure.

The coffee is too old.| Use fresh coffee
There is too much chlorine in the water.| Use a chlorine filter.
The amount of ground coffee is not enough.| Use the right coffee amount: Approx. 7 g of coffee for each

cup.

The shower screen is dirty.| Clean the brew group.
Problem| Possible Cause| Troubleshooting
---|---|---

Sparse coffee dispensing, only drop by drop

| ****

The grind is too fine.

| Use a coarser grind.

Tamp ground coffee only slightly. Increase the brewing-pressure.

There is too much ground coffee.| Use approx. 7 g of coffee for

every cup.

Weak “body”

| The grind is not fine enough.| Use a finer grind.
The coffee is old.| Use fresh coffee.
The amount of ground coffee is not enough.| Use approx. 7 g of coffee for each cup.
The shower screen is dirty.| Clean the shower screen.
The machine does not stop

working when there’s no water in

tank and takes in air.

| Machine in use with water tank but switch in position “1” (=

position direct water connection).

| Switch to position “0” (=position

water tank).

Foam instead of crema

| The beans are improper.| Use another coffee bean.
The setting of the coffee grinder is not suited for the coffee beans in use.| Adjust the coffee grinder (When changing the coffee beans, changing the grind may also be

necessary.)

 | Machine in use with water tank but switch in position “1” (= position direct water connection).| Switch to position “0” (=position

water tank).

Portafilter/ brew group is dripping.| Portafilter is not fixed properly.| Fix the portafilter properly.
Group gasket is broken.| Change group gasket and shower

screen.

The display shows a dot.| The display is switched off| Press + to turn on the PID.
The display shows “CLn”.| The reminder for the brew group

cleaning is programmed.

| Clean the brew group (Chapter

7.2)

If the machine will not be used for a long period of time, it is recommended to

  • clean the brew group (see instructions in chapter 7.2). Afterward, do not clamp the portafilter back into the group.
  • empty the boiler. Switch the machine off (power switch in position “0”) and open the hot water dispenser. Due to the boiler pressure, the boiler water is now discharged by the hot water dispenser. Close the hot water lever valve again after emptying the boiler. To restart the machine, see chapter “First use”.

How to froth milk

  • If possible, use cold and fresh milk with a fat content of approx. 1.5 % or 3 %. Even homogenized milk is suitable – if you prefer.
  • Use a frothing container (made of metal) with a minimum volume of 0.5 litres. The size of the container should not be too wide. A narrow and high container is better.
  • Open the steam valve for approx. 5 seconds to release the condensation water and to create dry steam.
  • Fill 1/3 of the frothing container with milk and place it under the steam nozzle. The nozzle should be immersed in the middle of the frothing container, just below the surface.
  • Slowly open the steam lever valve. Steam pervades the milk.
  • Keep the frothing container still.
  • After a few seconds you will notice a light suction in the milk jug. Proper frothing begins. Move the milk jug downwards as the milk level increases. The steam nozzle must be kept under the surface of the frothed milk.
  • When the desired amount of milk froth is reached, immerse the entire steam nozzle in the frothing container for a short time and close the steam lever valve Milk proteins “froth” with a temperature up to 77°C. Once this temperature is exceeded, the milk does not froth any further.
  • Advice: When milk frothing is finished, just shake the frothing container a little bit in order to make the milk bubbles ascend to the surface and to get a compact milk froth.
  • After frothing the milk, release the steam into the drip tray to avoid blockage of the steam nozzle.
