GENERAL APPLICATION NOTES

This product is part of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falls from a height and should be assigned to a person. These instructions contain vital information. The instructions must have been understood by the user before actual use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. The following instructions for use are important and help ensuring proper practical application. However, they cannot replace experience, responsible action and knowledge required for mountaineering, climbing, and working at a height or depth; and they certainly cannot free users from shouldering their personal risk.

GENERAL SAFETY NOTES

Mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths often entail hidden dangers and risks caused by external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause severe accidents, injury, and even death. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety. Use only CE marked components of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falling from a height. If original components of the product are modified or removed, the safety properties may be influenced adversely. The equipment should not be altered or remodelled or adjusted by use of additional parts in any way not specifically recommended by the manufacturer in writing. Before and after use, check the product for possible damage. Ensure fitness for use and correct function. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately. In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. In such cases, the responsibility and risk lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation. When using this product, we recommend additionally observing the applicable national rules. Personal protective equipment is exclusively designed for securing of persons. Before using the device, users must acquire knowledge concerning the possibilities for safe and effective rescue action.

Notes for static ropes shape B: Static ropes with shape B are meant for abseiling in connection with suitable descender devices for rescue to EN 341. Static ropes shape B offer less performance and safety margin than static ropes shape A and are not recommended for industrial use. The possibility of a fall should be carefully minimised, especially if static ropes type B are used. Generally, ropes shape A are better suited for rope-supported work or workstation positioning than ropes shape B.

SAFETY NOTES

If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety. Use only CE marked components of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falling from a height.

If the static rope is used in connection with PPE systems (e. g. descender devices (EN 341), fall arrest systems (EN 363), adjusting devices (EN 358, EN 353-2) etc.), these systems must be approved for use in connection with such ropes. Be sure to observe the application notes for proper use and especially the markings on the system itself concerning required rope type and diameter.

(1) Terminal connections: The following knots may be used to achieve safe terminal connections: overhand knot or figure-of-eight knot.

Attention: A splice should never and for no application be used as a terminal attachment point.

(2) Before and after use, check that the splice securing is visible as shown.
(3) Regularly check the size of the splices eye. If the eyes size increases, the end connection must be cut off.
(4) Use the cord supplied to pull the splice through a device as shown.

Ropes may shrink due to aging or during application (e. g. due to moisture), consider this for the respective application.

Attachment point: To prevent the high shock loads occurring in a pendulum fall, the attachment points for securing must always be located vertically above the person to be secured. The lanyard from the attachment point to the secured person must be kept as tightly tensioned as possible. Avoid sagging of ropes! The attachment point must be designed such that attachment of a lanyard will not result in influences reducing its loading strength or causing damage to the lanyard. Sharp edges, burrs and pinching may substantially impair the loading strength. Spots causing such damage may have to be covered with suitable auxiliary materials. The attachment point and the anchoring must be capable of withstanding the loads occurring in the worst conceivable case. Even if energy absorbers (to EN 355) are used, the attachment points must be suitable for arrest forces of min. 12 kN.

Ropes for fall arrest: Static ropes are not suitable for lead climbing! Ropes to be used for securing a lead climber on rock or ice, for caving, canyoning and rescuing, must conform to EN 892, dynamic mountaineering ropes.

Even individual sections of static ropes must bear permanent labels at the rope ends.

Before and after use, check the product for possible damage. Ensure fitness for use and correct function. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately.
Attention! The products must not be subjected to damaging influences. This specifically includes contact with caustic or aggressive substances (e.g.: acids, lye, soldering fluid, oils, cleaning agents) as well as extreme temperatures and flying sparks. Sharp edges, moisture and icing especially may substantially impair the loading strength of textile products!

Attention! The abrasion forces occurring during fast abseiling and lowering may strongly damage the rope jacket, especially if the melting temperature of polyamide (approx. 215 °C) or of polypropylen (approx. 160 °C, used in the core of floating ropes) is reached.

CLIMATE DURING USE

The temperature range for continuous use of the product (in dry conditions) is approx. -40 °C to +55 °C.

SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT

The service life of the product mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as on external influences. Products made of synthetic fibres (Polyamid, Polyester, Dyneema®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to. When approaching the durability limits or latest at the end of the maximum service life indicated, the product must be removed from use.
Notes regarding products with high-strength fibers:
– Aramid fibers have a low resistance to UV radiation and should therefore not be exposed to sunlight for pro longed periods.
– High-strength polyethylene fibers have a lower melting point (140 °C) than other synthetic fibers and a much lower coefficient of friction, which can make such textile products more difficult to control during use.

Maximum service life is achieved under optimum storage conditions (see storage) and without use: 14 years

Occasional use: Service life for infrequent proper use, without detectable wear and at optimum storage conditions: 10 years

Frequent or extrem use: with extreme operating conditions, including frequent abseiling, heavy contamination and mechanical abrasion, the safety reserves of a static rope may be exhausted to such an extent that the rope must be removed from use. Generally, PPE products must be replaced immediately if the edges of webbing is damage or if fibres have been pulled from the webbing, if visible signs of abrasion show on seems or if the product has come in contact with chemicals. Ropes or products into which ropes are integrated, must be replaced immediately if a hard fall load (fall factor >1) has occurred or if the jacket is badly damaged (the core being visible), or if they have come in contact with chemicals. Repairs may only be performed as outlined in the instructions of the manufacturer.

INSPECTION AND DOCUMENTATION

In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an adequately qualified person, or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or removed from use. Legibility of the markings must be checked. Such inspections and service must be documented for each product. The following information must be recorded: product identification and name, manufacturer’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and signature of qualified person responsible. INSTRUCTIONS FOR MARKING OF ROPES

This set is meant for marking of rope sections by the responsible person putting the product on the market. The PPE regulation and applicable rope standards require marking of products. This also ap-plies to every rope section severed from the original length of the rope.

The rope sections must be marked as follows:

The fields on the enclosed marking strips must be filled with the information below using a waterproof pen. The information shall be extracted from the respective product label.

  • Rope length in metres
  • Lot number (for dynamic ropes to EN 892 it is to be indicated on the unprinted marking strip)
  • Type and diameter, e.g. A 10.5 (only for static ropes to EN 1891)

Each rope section must be provided with the labels on both ends.
Dynamic ropes to EN 892, which are labelled with an additional empty marking strip, only need to be marked with the lot number on one end.
To ensure permanent fixing of the marking strips to the rope, be sure to wrap the strips tightly around the rope. Hot air is not required for fixing.
Additionally, a copy of the printed instructions must be handed to the user. The instructions can be downloaded from the EDELRID website.
A copy of the attached label containing the technical data must also be provided to the user.

STORAGE, TRANSPORT AND MAINTENANCE

Storage: Store cool, dry, and protected from daylight outside transport containers. Prevent contact with chemicals. Prevent mechanic strain by crushing, pressure or tension.

Transport: Protect the product from direct sunlight, chemicals, contamination and mechanical damage. To ensure this, use a protective bag or special storage and transport containers.

Cleaning: Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary.

Example of banderole marking: A 11.0 EN 1891 signifies a kernmantel rope with low stretch (EN 1891), shape A and a rated diameter of 11 mm.
Technical datasheet: Lot number with year of construction.
