Instruction

GENERAL APPLICATION NOTES

This product is part of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falls from a height and should be assigned to a person. These instructions contain vital information. The instructions must have been understood by the user before actual use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. The following instructions for use are important and help ensuring proper practical application. However, they cannot replace experience, responsible action and knowledge required for mountaineering, climbing, and working at a height or depth; and they certainly cannot free users from shouldering their personal risk. Choice of suitable equipment requires experience and shall be made based on a hazard analysis.
Only trained and experienced persons may use the product; other persons must be instructed and supervised.
The user should be aware that deficient bodily or mental health may impair safety of normal application and in emergency situations.
Attention: If these instructions for use are not carefully observed, the life of persons may be at risk!

GENERAL SAFETY NOTES

Mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths often entail hidden dangers and risks caused by external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause severe accidents, injury, and even death. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safe function of the single product or combined equipment. Use only CE marked componen s of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against falling from a height. If original components of the product are modified or removed, the safety properties may be influenced adversely. The equipment should not be altered or remodelled or adjusted by use of additional parts in any way not specifically recommended by the manufacturer in writing. Before and after use, check the product for possible damage. Ensure fitness for use and correct function. The product must be discarded immediately if even the slightest doubt concerning its safety in use has come up. In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. In such cases, the responsibility and risk lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation.
When using this product, we recommend additionally observing the applicable national rules. Personal protective equipment is exclusively designed for securing of persons. Before and during use safe and effective rescue measures need to be prepared. Before using a fall arrest system, ensure that the required vacant  space (clear height and free of other obstacle in the fall path)below the user is available. Make sure to choose the anchor point position correctly, in order to limit the risk and the length of a fall. Fall arrest harness are the only equipment allowed to use in a fall arrest system and have to be connected with the energy absorber with a EN 362 karabiner on the A or A/2 marked attachment points. Don’t use this equipment outside its limitations or for any purpose other than intended.

Karabiners to EN 12275, types (for mountaineering)

A: Special karabiner hook special applications
B: Basic karabiner for general use, with screw-lock or automatic lock,
H: HMS karabiner, special shape for use in connection with HMS belaying,
K: Ascending climbing karabiner for special use with climbing sets
T: Karabiner with positioning device for webbing slings or ropes,
X: Oval karabiner, special shape, no full protection in case of dropping load,
Q: Screwed connector, which upon having been closed completely is meant for long-term or permanent connections.

Connectors to EN 362, classes (for personal fall protection system)

B: Basic connector for general use, with screw lock or automatic lock,
M: Multi-function connector that may be loaded along its main and secondary axis,
T: End connector for use in systems,
A: Stopper connector for use with special anchors, such as pipes,
Q: Screwed connector, which upon having been closed completely is meant for long-term or permanent connections.

See table for type and assigned class, material and width of lock opening (a). Connetors should always be loaded in the working position only and not at the snap lock. The snap lock must close automatically and interlock, check this before every use. Connectors may only be used with closed and locked snap lock (in case of screwed locks these must be closed completely at all times;
Attention – Do not overtighten!). Connectors with manual lock (“screwed locks”) should not be used if they need to be connected/disconnected frequently. Screwed connectors class Q must be screwed completely (the thread must not be visible); exterior pressure on the karabiner/connector will substantially reduce its loading strength; the locking sleeve may break or the snap lock open. The maximum tensile strength is drastically reduced with open snap lock. Additionally note, that the maximum tensile strength of the karabiner/connector may be reduced by use of wide ribbons or belts. If the connector is used in a fall arrest system, pay close attention to correct positioning of the connector as it will alter the length of the system and thereby may influence the fall distance. When using express slings, do not attach several karabiners to one and the same sling part.

Attachment point

To prevent the high shock loads occurring in a pendulum fall, the anchor device for securing must always be located vertically above the person to be secured. The lanyard/anchor device between the attachment point and the secured person must be kept as tightly tensioned as possible. Avoid sagging of ropes! The attachment point must be designed such that attachment of a PPE will not result in influences reducing its loading strength or causing damage to it. Sharp edges, burrs and pinching may substantially impair the loading strength. Spots causing such damage may have to be covered with suitable auxiliary materials. The attachment point and the anchoring must be capable of withstanding the loads occurring in the worst conceivable case. Even if energy absorbers (to EN 355) are used as required by EN 363 (fall arrest systems), the minimum breaking strength of an anchor device has to be 12 kN, also refer to EN 795.

GENERAL NOTES CONCERNING CHOICE OF ATTACHMENT POINT, SAFETY, SERVICE LIFE, CARE AND MARKING

Attention! The products must not be subjected to damaging influences. These include contact with caustic or aggressive substances (e. g.: acids, lye, soldering fluid, oils, cleaning agents) as well as extreme temperatures and flying sparks. Sharp edges, moisture and icing especially may substantially impair the loading strength of textile products!

SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT

The service life of the product mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as on external influences. Products made of synthetic fibres (Polyamid, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to.
When approaching the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life indicated, the product must be removed from use.

Maximum service life
With optimum storage conditions (see Storage) and without use: (Express) slings: 14 years, karabiners and connectors: no limit.
Maximum useful life (commercial/non-commercial use) Providing proper use and no detectable signs of wear showing as well as under optimum storage conditions: textil components (webbing): 10 years, karabiners and connectors: no limit.

Check-up and inspection
Before use, check the product for possible damage and correct function.
Remove the product from service immediately if any of the following applies

  • fall and impact from great height,
  • extreme grooving and/or deformation,
  • sharp edges from material wear,
  • damage is visible or the function is impaired,

If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately.

Textile elements:

  • if webbing edges are damaged or individual fibres have been pulled from the webbing
  • if visible signs of damage or abrasion show on seems
  • if melting burns, decolouration or strong furryness of the webbing have occurred
  • if the material has come in contact with chemicals or has been subjected to a hard fall load
  • if webbing or slings have an integrated wear indicator, the product must be replaced immediately if wear has exposed the indicator (internal fabric of different colour has become visible), continued use may cause fatal accidents.

Inspection and documentation
In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly or at least once a year by the manufacturer, a qualified person or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or removed from use.
Legibility of the markings has to be checked. Such inspections and servicemust be documented for each product; record the following information: Product identification and name, manufacturer’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and signature of qualified person responsible.
