SAFETY NOTICES

When combining this product with other components, the safety aspects of the products may interfere with each other. This equipment should only be used in connection with parts of personal protective equipment (PPE) bearing the CE- symbol to secure individuals against falls from heights. If original components are modified or removed from the product, its safety aspects may be restricted.
The equipment must be checked for possible damage before and after each use. It must be ensured that the equipment is serviceable and fully functional. The equip-ment must be discarded immediately if there is even the slightest doubt as to its serviceability.

WARNING!

The products must be kept away from damaging environments. This includes contact with abrasive and aggres-sive substances (e.g. acids, (battery acid!), alkalis, soldering water, oils, cleaning agents), as well as extreme tempera- tures and flying sparks. Also, sharp edges, friction wear on other textiles (fig. 3a – e), moisture and icing, particularly, may substantially impair the resilience of textile products! Aging and certain conditions of use (e. g. moisture) may cause ropes to shrink; observe this when using them. New ropes may be smooth: The effectiveness of braking and securing devices may be reduced by new ropes. Thin ropes require special precautions, as it is not easy to hold on to them with the brake hand while securing another person.

CLIMATE REQUIREMENTS

The permanent use temperature of the product (in dry condition) ranges from approx. -35°C to +55°C.

LIFESPAN AND REPLACEMENT

The lifespan of the product mainly depends on the way and frequency in which it is used and external influences. Prod-ucts made from synthetic fibre (polyamide, polyester, dyneema) are subject to a certain aging process even if they are not used. This is caused by the intensivity of UV-rays and environmental influences.

MAXIMUM LIFESPAN
under optimal storage conditions (see section on Storage) and without use: 14 years

OCCASIONAL USE

Occasional and appropriate use without obvious wear and tear and with optimal storage: 10 years.

FREQUENT OR EXTREME USE

If used under extreme conditions with frequent falls (factor <1), frequent abseiling or toproping, considerable dirt (sand, dust, chalk) and mechanical abrasion (e.g. rough, sharp rocks), the safety reserves of a mountaineering rope may be reduced to such an extent after only a few weeks of use that it will have to be replaced.
Ropes or products with ropes must be replaced immediate-ly if they have been involved in an extreme fall (fall factor 1) or if the sheath has been damaged (so that the core is visible) or if it has been in contact with chemicals. Repairs may only be carried out in accordance with procedures recommended by the manufacturer.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MARKING OF ROPES

  • This set is meant for marking of rope sections by the res-ponsible person putting the product on the market.
  • The PPE directive and applicable rope standards require marking of products. This also ap-plies to every rope sec-tion severed from the original length of the rope.
  • The rope sections must be marked as follows:

The fields on the enclosed marking strips must be filled with the information below using a waterproof pen. The informa-tion shall be extracted from the respective product label.

  • Rope length in metres
  • Lot number (for dynamic ropes to EN 892 it is to be indi-cated on the unprinted mark-ing strip)
  • Type and diameter, e.g. A 10.5 (only for static ropes to EN 1891)
  • Each rope section must be provided with the labels on both ends.
  • Dynamic ropes to EN 892, which are labelled with an addi-tional empty marking strip, only need to be marked with the lot number on one end.
  • To ensure permanent fixing of the marking strips to the rope, be sure to wrap the strips tightly around the rope. Hot air is not required for fixing.
  • Additionally, a copy of the printed instructions must be handed to the user. The instructions can be downloaded from the EDELRID website.
  • A copy of the attached label containing the technical data must also be provided to the user.

Sustainability at all levels – the rope mat for sustainable “end-of-life” product management.
EDELRID is proud to be certified According To EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) with the Eco-Management System DIN ISO 14001.

What you need:

  • 40 m of old climbing rope or two 20 m ropes
  • A wooden board 75 x 65 cm
  • A hammer
  • 18 nails at least 5 cm of length
  • A rope cutter (borrow one from your local dealer or climbing gym), alternatively use a lighter
  • The rope mat pattern sketch, which you can download from the EDELRID website

INSTALLATION

  1. Nail the scetch to the wooden board
  2. Take the sketch and hammer it to the wooden board.
  3. The crosses indicate where to put the nails.
  4. You are now ready to start weaving.

The first round:

  • Begin at number 1 and follow through in sequence to number 19
  • Please note the lines have marks: the thick bars tell you which rope should lay on top in the weaving process
  • From 1 to 10, keep the rope tight as it passes around each nail
  • From 11 to 19, it is important to leave enough space to fit another line of rope between the first round of rope and the nail. So keep the rope a little loose as it passes around each nail.

Check:

  • Once you have completed the first round, it’s best to take a moment to check your work for mistakes, and correct them now rather than later
  • Beginning at 1, trace the rope with your finger all the way through the circuit, to 19 it should be an even rhythm of under, over, under, over … the whole way
  • If you find a mistake, undo the weaving to that point. Correct the mistake and continue carefully then check again

The second round:

  • At 1, follow the rope on the inside (or left) of the first line of rope so that at 2 it passes on the outside of the first rope. You will see that all turns from 1 to 10 will then pass on the outside of the 1st rope
  • Once you reach 11, you will see that the rope naturally leads to an inside turn
  • At this point, pass the rope between the nail and the first round of rope, keeping your work flat and tidy. All turns from 11 to 19 will be inside turns.

The third round:

  • Continue to follow the rope around as on round 2
  • At 11, this time pass the rope on the inside of each nail through to 19
  • Be careful not to pull the rope too tight. Instead, lay it neatly next to the laid rope
  • If your rope runs out (i.e. if you using a 20 m rope), continue with the next length. You can melt them together later

The fourth round:

  • Continue as for round 3
  • At the end of this round, or as soon as the rope becomes difficult to weave, lift the work-in-progress off the wooden board and lay it carefully onto the table or flat working surface

On the fifth round:

  • Pat the mat down with your palms so that it lays flat
  • Weave the fifth and final round by simply following the rope around the circuit as you have been doing
  • Make sure you donʼt pull it too tight. Ensure that the rope coils lie next to each other, not on top of one another

Fixing the ends:

  • Cut the ends with a rope cutter and melt them together
  • You can melt the ends onto each other or to the strand next to them

If you donʼt have a rope cutter: secure the ends with finger tape, cut them with a knife and then melt them together using a lighter. You can remove the tape when youʼve finished. Turn it over and your rope mat is ready.

Ideas:

If you are camping and do not have a wooden board, you can simply secure the pattern to the ground using tent pegs, sticks, etc. Wash your rope first for a more vibrant finish. Try using different coloured ropes, allowing approx. 10m for each round.
Enjoy!
