DYNAMIC CLIMBING ROPE ACCORDING TO EN 892:2023

This product is part of personal protective equipment for protection against falls from heights and should be allocat- ed to one individual. These instructions for use contain important information which must be understood and ob- served under all circumstances. This document must be provided to the customer by the retailer in the respective country’s language and must be kept with the equipment while it is in use.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths often harbour hidden dangers and risks caused by external influences. Risk of accidents can never be excluded. In order to achieve maximum safety when mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths, safe use of equipment is only guaranteed if it complies with industrial norms. For more detailed and comprehensive information, please refer to relevant special literature. The following instructions are important to ensure appropriate and correct use of the equipment. However, they cannot replace experience, responsible behaviour and awareness of the risks inherent in mountaineering, climbing and working at heights and in depths and do not release the user from any personal responsibility. Use of the equipment is only permitted to fit and experienced individuals or under appropriate guidance and tuition. Users must be aware that poor physical and mental health can jeopardise safety under normal conditions and in emergencies. Before using the equipment, users must familiarise themselves with safe and effective rescue procedures. The manufacturer cannot be held liable if the equipment has been abused or used incorrectly. All risks and responsibilities are borne by the user at all times.

Fig. 4a – b: For securing and abseiling a stop knot must be made in the vacant end of the rope
Fig. 5a – b: Always consider the dynamic elongation of the rope, to prevent impact on the ground.

SAFETY NOTICES

When combining this product with other components, the safety aspects of the products may interfere with each other. This equipment should only be used in connection with parts of personal protective equipment (PPE) bearing the CE- symbol to secure individuals against falls from heights. If original components are modified or removed from the product, its safety aspects may be restricted.

The equipment must be checked for possible damage before and after each use. It must be ensured that the equipment is serviceable and fully functional. The equipment must be discarded immediately if there is even the slightest doubt as to its serviceability.

WARNING! The products must be kept away from damaging environments. This includes contact with abrasive and aggressive substances (e.g. acids, (battery acid!), alkalis, soldering water, oils, cleaning agents), as well as extreme temperatures and flying sparks. Also, sharp edges, friction wear on other textiles (fig. 3a – e), moisture and icing, particularly, may substantially impair the resilience of textile products! Aging and certain conditions of use (e. g. moisture) may cause ropes to shrink; observe this when using them. New ropes may be smooth: The effectiveness of braking and securing devices may be reduced by new ropes. Thin ropes require special precautions, as it is not easy to hold on to them with the brake hand while securing another person.

CLIMATE REQUIREMENTS

The permanent use temperature of the product (in dry condition) ranges from approx. -35°C to +55°C.

LIFESPAN AND REPLACEMENT

The lifespan of the product mainly depends on the way and frequency in which it is used and external influences. Products made from synthetic fibre (polyamide, polyester, dyneema®) are subject to a certain aging process even if they are not used. This is caused by the intensivity of UVrays and environmental influences.

Notes regarding products with high-strength fibers:

  • Aramid fibers have a low resistance to UV radiation and should therefore not be exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • High-strength polyethylene fibers have a lower melting point (140 °C) than other synthetic fibers and a much lower coefficient of friction, which can make such textile products more difficult to control during use.

MAXIMUM LIFESPAN under optimal storage conditions (see section on Storage) and without use: 14 years

OCCASIONAL USE

Occasional and appropriate use without obvious wear and tear and with optimal storage: 10 years.

FREQUENT OR EXTREME USE

If used under extreme conditions with frequent falls (factor <1), frequent abseiling or toproping, considerable dirt (sand, dust, chalk) and mechanical abrasion (e.g. rough, sharp rocks), the safety reserves of a mountaineering rope may be reduced to such an extent after only a few weeks of use that it will have to be replaced.

Ropes or products with ropes must be replaced immediately if they have been involved in an extreme fall (fall factor >1) or if the sheath has been damaged (so that the core is visible) or if it has been in contact with chemicals. Repairs may only be carried out in accordance with procedures recommended by the manufacturer.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MARKING OF ROPES

This set is meant for marking of rope sections by the responsible person putting the product on the market.

The PPE regulation and applicable rope standards require marking of products. This also ap-plies to every rope section severed from the original length of the rope.

The rope sections must be marked as follows:

The fields on the enclosed marking strips must be filled with the information below using a waterproof pen. The information shall be extracted from the respective product label.

  • Rope length in metres
  • Lot number (for dynamic ropes to EN 892 it is to be indicated on the unprinted mark-ing strip)
  • Type and diameter, e.g. A 10.5 (only for static ropes to EN 1891)

Each rope section must be provided with the labels on both ends.
Dynamic ropes to EN 892, which are labelled with an additional empty marking strip, only need to be marked with the lot number on one end.

To ensure permanent fixing of the marking strips to the rope, be sure to wrap the strips tightly around the rope. Hot air is not required for fixing.

Additionally, a copy of the printed instructions must be handed to the user. The instructions can be downloaded from the EDELRID website.

A copy of the attached label containing the technical data must also be provided to the user.

STORAGE, TRANSPORT AND CARE

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, dark place outside transport containers. Avoid contact with chemicals (caution: battery acid!) Store without mechanical stress caused by jamming, pressure or tension.

Transport

The product must be kept away from direct sunlight, chemicals, dirt and mechanical damage. Use a suitable transport container (e. g. rope bag).

Cleaning: see Fig. 7

Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary.

WARNING! FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY ENDANGER LIFE!
