GENERAL SAFETY AND APPLICATION NOTES

These instructions for use contain important notes for proper practical use. These notes must be understood before use and be adhered to during use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. However, mere reading of the instructions for use cannot replace experience, responsible action and knowledge required for mountaineering, climbing, and working at height or depth; and it cannot free users from bearing their personal risk.
The product must be used exclusively by trained, experienced persons or after direct instruction and direct supervision by trained and experienced persons. The product must be used exclusively in connection with CE marked components of personal
protective equipment offering protection against falls. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety. The person using the equipment or supervising users is responsible for ensuring the compatibility of the components and anchorage points. Poor physical and/or mental health can jeopardize safety under normal conditions and in emergencies. Mountaineering, climbing, and work at a height or depth often entail hidden risks and hazards from external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause severe accidents, injuries, and even death.
The equipment must not be altered in any way not expressly recommended by the manufacturer in writing. The ready for use condition and proper function of the equipment must be checked and ensured before and after each use. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately.
In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. The responsibility and risks lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation. It is recommended to additionally observe the national rules for the application of the product.
Attention: Failure to observe these instructions for use may lead to severe injury or even death!

ANCHOR POINTS

For safety reasons it is essential to choose the position of the anchorage device or anchorage point and the type of work to be carried out must be selected in such a way that free fall and fall height are kept to a minimum. Before using a fall arrest system, ensure that the required free space below the user (including on-site construction elements) is available.
In order to avoid high loads and swinging falls in the event of a fall, anchor points for belay purposes must always be as vertical as possible above the person to be belayed. The anchor point must be designed in such a way that, when fixing the PPE, no effects can occur which reduce the stability and it is not damaged during use. Sharp edges, ridges and crushing can seriously impair the stability. These should be covered, where necessary, using suitable auxiliary equipment. The anchor point and the anchoring must be able to withstand the expected loads in a worst-case scenario. Even when using shock absorbers (according to EN 355) the anchor points should be capable to resist forces of at least 12 kN, also see EN 795.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE DEVICE IN ACCORDANCE WITH EN 12841-C
Devices according Type C are designed for moving along a working rope. It should always be used in conjunction with a back-up device certified to EN 12841-A on a second independent rope when working at height. Only to be used with ropes according to EN 1891.
Ropes tested during the EN 12841 type C certification:

  • EDELRID Enduro Static 10,0 mm
  • EDELRID Performance Static 10,5 mm.

The device is not suitable for use as a fall arrest system. Any dynamic load can damage the rope.
PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION, EXPLANATION OF ILLUSTRATIONS
The braking effect of the device depends on the diameter of the rope, the nature of the rope, the humidity and other factors (rain, temperature, weight of the belayed person, etc.). Familiarize yourself with it before each use.
1 Nomenclature and compatibility: A – Releasing lever, B – Braking cam, C – Movable side plate, D – Mounting channel, E – Mounting eyelets, F – Rope channel, G – Opening push button, H – Marking.
2 Approved applications for the device.
3 Approved diameter ranges for different rope types and applicable standards.
ATTENTION: The diameters of commercially available ropes can deviate from the nominal value by up to 0.2 mm.
3b The abseiling device reaches its performance limit when all parameters are utilized to the permitted maximum. Under extreme conditions, this can lead to loss of control and/or damage to the rope during abseiling. Pay attention and take additional measures if necessary (increase the frictional resistance, reduce the speed, divide the abseiling route into shorter sections by using intermediate belays). It is recommended that you always redirect the braking rope.
4 Correct installation of the device. The device can either be connected via the two mounting eyelets (E) and a suitable locking carabiner or directly via the mounting channel (D) to a suitable anchor point with a minimum width of 10 mm. For the latter variant, the device can also be backed up with a carabiner. Attention: When belaying a lead climber from a belaying station, the resulting impact force to the belay station and for the lead climber can be very high. The applicability must be assessed by the rope team in the respective situation.
5 Incorrect handling during installation.
6 A partner check must be performed before each operation to avoid dangerous errors during use of the equipment.
The belaying person should wear gloves. A knot should also be tied at the end of the belaying rope.
7 Function test and hazardous sources: A function check must be carried out before each use. Gloves are always recommended. Ensure that hair, fingers or clothing do not get caught in the appliance. Caution: The metal parts can become very hot when the rope passes through them.
8 Correct use for belaying when lead climbing / top-rope climbing: The braking rope must be enclosed with the braking hand at all times.
8a Correct use for releasing the rope with the right and left hand. The brak ing rope is enclosed with four fingers, the thumb is only placed on the releasing lever for the action of dealing out of rope.
8b Correct use for pulling in of rope.
9 Incorrect handling during belaying.
10a Correct use for the lowering / abseiling process: Always ensure that the braking rope and the releasing lever are controlled with one hand at all times during lowering. It must be ensured that the releasing lever can move freely throughout its entire range of movement during use and cannot be blocked by obstacles.
10b If the anti-panic function has been activated, the releasing lever must be moved forward once again to continue the lowering process.
10c If the anti-panic function has been activated, the lever can be pulled further back in special situations and by experienced persons in order to continue the lowering process.
10d We recommend redirection of the braking rope when lowering a top-rope climber.
11 Incorrect use during lowering and abseiling.
12 To permanently deactivate the anti-panic function, screw the enclosed screw into the position shown on the underside of the releasing lever.
Caution: Only for experienced users.
MAINTENANCE, STORAGE AND TRANSPORT
13 Correct storage and transport.
14 Maintenance: Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary. The joints of metal parts must be cleansed regularly and then be lubricated with acid-free oil or a lubricant based on PTFE or silicone.
SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT
15 Maximum service life in years: Corresponds to the time from the date of manufacture to discard state. Products made of synthetic fibers (Polyamide, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid, Vectran®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially depends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to.
16 Maximum useful life providing proper use and no detectable signs of wear showing as well as under optimum storage conditions. The useful life of the product corresponds to the time from first use to discard state and mainly depends on the type and frequency of use as well as external influences. At the end of the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life, the product must be removed from use.
Frequent use or extremely high load may substantially reduce the service life. Therefore, before every use, check the device for possible damage and correct function. If any of the following points apply, immediately remove the product from use and turn it over to an adequately qualified person or the manufacturer for inspection and/or repair (we do not claim this list is complete):
– if there are doubts concerning safe use;
– if sharp edges have the potential to damage the rope or hurt the user;
– if signs of damage are visible (e. g. fissures, plastic deformation);
– if the material shows signs of strong corrosion or if it has come in contact with chemicals;
– if sharp edges are located on the metal parts;
– if abrasion is extensive on metal parts, i.e., loss of material;
– if the gate can no longer be closed;
– if a hard fall load has occurred.
INSPECTION AND DOCUMENTATION
17 Inspection and documentation: In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an adequately qualified person, or an approved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or  removed from use. Legibility of the markings has to be checked. Such inspections and service must be documented for each product.
