PREPARATION

Before you install your Hardshell Locking Box, you need to determine which hardware kit to use for installation. Your Hardshell Locking Box comes with two hardware kits: kit #1, which has bolts for use with any bike model that features threaded mounting points on its rear rack. The bolts in this kit are also used when installing the Hardshell Locking Box with the mounting bracket. The washers in this kit are used when mounting the Hardshell Locking Box to the mounting bracket. Other bike models have unthreaded mounts and are compatible with the bolts in hardware kit #2. Here’s how to tell the difference between these rear racks:
Racks with threaded mounts (use hardware kit #1): The top of these rear racks have mounting points (holes) with threads for gripping bolts.
These threaded mounting points don’t extend through the tubing and out the bottom. Mounting bolts in this kit are shorter and don’t require a nut (Figure 3 ).
Racks with unthreaded mounts (use hardware kit #2): These racks have mounting points (holes) that allow a bolt to pass through the top and then through the bottom of the tubing. This kit contains bolts of two different lengths and are secured with a nut on the underside of the rack.
Utilize the correct bolts (included) for your rack by ensuring the bolt extends all the way through the mounting point out the other side of the tubing, and through the nut without leaving excess length (Figure 4 ).

GETTING STARTED

  1. Get the bike ready for maintenance. Turn off the bike, remove the battery, and press and hold “MODE” or the “POWER” button to discharge remaining power.

  2. Remove any accessories attached to the rear rack. If your rear rack has no accessories attached, continue to the next step.
NOTE: For the RadWagon, you will need to remove the top wood deck and running boards before installing the mounting plate and Hardshell Locking Box.

  3. Prepare the Hardshell Locking Box. Remove the false floor to expose the mounting holes in the bottom of the trunk and set the false floor aside (Figure 2 ).

INSTALLATION

  1. Attach the mounting bracket (optional). The Hardshell Locking Box comes with an optional mounting bracket. The mounting bracket ensures that the Hardshell Locking Box does not make contact with your bike seat, and allows for the installation of certain additional accessories, such as the Hardshell Locking Pannier (sold separately). Using the mounting bracket is recommended for ease of making seat adjustments.
    a. Align the four unthreaded mounting bracket holes with the four holes in the rear rack.
    b. If you’re using the bolts from hardware kit #1, pass each bolt through the mounting bracket, and into the rear rack. Use a 4 mm Allen wrench to tighten all four bolts to 4 Nm (Figure 3 ).
If you are using hardware kit #2, pass each bolt through the mounting bracket, and through the rear rack. Place a large washer on the end of each bolt and thread a nut onto the end of each bolt by hand. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench to tighten all four bolts to 4 Nm (Figure 4 ).
NOTE: When using the Hardshell Locking Pannier, sold separately, install the Pannier mounting bracket on top of the Hardshell Locking Box mounting bracket.

  2. Attach the Hardshell Locking Box to the mounting bracket (optional). If you are not using the mounting bracket, skip to the next step.
    a. Place the Hardshell Locking Box on top of the mounting bracket. The side of the box with the lock should be toward the rear of the bike so that the lid opens toward the rider.
    b. Pass a small bolt from kit #1 through a small washer, through each of the four holes in the Hardshell Locking Box, and into the mounting bracket (Figure 5 ). Thread the bolts in by hand, and torque to 4 Nm.

  3. Attach the Hardshell Locking Box to the rear rack.
    a. Place the Hardshell Locking Box on top of the rear rack. The side of the box with the lock should be toward the rear of the bike so that the lid opens toward the rider.
    b. Align the four holes in the Hardshell Locking Box with the four holes in the rear rack.
    c. If you are using hardware kit #1, pass each bolt through the Hardshell Locking Box, and into the rear rack (Figure 6 ). Thread in the bolts by hand.
If you are using hardware kit #2, pass each bolt through the Hardshell Locking Box, and into the rear rack (Figure 7 ). Place a large washer onto the end of each bolt, and thread on a nut by hand.
    d. Torque all four bolts to 4 Nm.

  4. Reinstall the false floor. Close the latch and secure the lid with the key (Figure 8 ).

  5. Reinstall the battery, test the bike fully before riding, and ride Rad!

WARNINGS
Do not ride your bike with the Hardshell Locking Box lid unlatched or open. Doing so can damage the Hardshell Locking Box and its contents.
Do not use this product to carry a child or live animals, which could lead to serious injury to or death of the child, animal, or rider. Using the Hardshell Locking Box to carry children or live animals may also cause damage to the bike, other property, or other people.
Follow all weight limits for your bike, this product, and any rack it is installed on. Exceeding the weight limit for the Hardshell Locking Box (15 lb or 6.8 kg), the rear rack, or the total carrying capacity of your bike can cause component failure, potentially leading to accidents that can cause serious injury or death. For more information on particular bike and rack weight limits, consult your bike’s Owner’s Manual and, if you purchased your rear rack separately from your bike, any documentation that came with your rear rack. The latest version of documentation for all products from Rad Power Bikes is available online at www.radpowerbikes.com/help (U.S. and Canada) or www.radpowerbikes.eu/help (Europe).
Do not rest your feet or any body parts on the Hardshell Locking Box, which can damage the accessory and its contents, and can increase the risk of falls and other accidents, potentially leading to death, serious injury, or property damage.
Carrying cargo significantly affects braking, acceleration, turning, and balancing, which can increase the risk of falls and other accidents, potentially leading to death, serious injury, or property damage. Weight from cargo should be loaded onto the rear rack as close to the center of the bike as possible but should not interfere with the rider or any moving parts. To minimize risk, practice riding with extra weight in a flat, open area with light cargo before attempting to carry heavier cargo, especially on roads, hills, or in wet conditions.
Loading cargo without holding onto the bike can cause the bike to tip, leading to damage or serious injury. The kickstand is designed to hold up an unoccupied, unloaded bike on a hard, flat, stable surface, not to support the weight of a rider or cargo. Always hold onto the bike when loading or unloading cargo.
This product is water resistant, but not waterproof. Do not submerge a water resistant product in water.
Ensure all cargo straps and nets are completely secured and away from any moving parts, or stored in the Hardshell Locking Box when the bike is in motion. Do not operate your bike with loose cargo straps or nets. Any such loose items can strike the rider or interfere with moving parts, leading to property damage, serious injury, or death.
