USB CHARGER

NOTICE: You MUST read and understand all warnings in this document AND the owner’s manual that shipped with your bike (and is available at radpowerbikes.com   (USA/Canada) or radpowerbikes.eu (Europe)) before using this accessory.
The latest version of these instructions and your owner’s manuals are available online.

ABOUT THE USB CHARGER

The USB Charger (see figure 1 ) is compatible with Rad Power Bikes e-bike models that have a semi-integrated battery.
The USB Charger provides 1 amp of power. It can charge many, but not all, USB devices. Drawing more than 1 amp will turn the charger off. If a device is plugged in and the device’s charge indicator doesn’t show that the charge is flowing, the device probably requires more than 1 amp and is unable to be charged by the USB Charger.
The USB Charger can be combined with another USB Charger. A maximum of two chargers can be installed onto the front accessory cable, and a maximum of two chargers can also be installed on the rear accessory cable. Do not use more than two USB Chargers in the front and the back of your bike at one time.
The USB charger can charge a device whether the bike display is on or off.

INSTALLATION: FRONT OF BIKE

TOOLS NEEDED: The USB Charger from Rad Power Bikes, zip ties, and flat- side cutters

  1. Prepare your bike for installation. Turn off the bike, unlock and remove the battery, and press and hold the power button to discharge the remaining power.

  2. Locate your front accessory cable. Your front accessory cable is connected to the wiring harness (the bundle of electrical cables, joined by a rectangular junction, at the front of your bike). Look at the lower part of the wiring harness’s junction, near the headlight. There will be two cables with connectors coming down from the junction. One of these cables connects to your headlight. The other cable is your accessory cable.

  3. Determine whether your bike comes with a jumper cable. The jumper cable is an extra piece of cable that some bikes have attached to the accessory cable.
    • If your accessory cable doesn’t connect with anything (it has a cap on its end), you do not have a jumper cable. (See figure 2 .)
    • If the accessory cable loops back up toward your wiring harness and connect to another cable, you do have a jumper cable. (See figure 4 .)

  4. Open your accessory cable.
    • If you do NOT have a jumper cable: Remove the connector cover from the accessory cable by pulling it apart without twisting. The interior of the accessory cable connector should be black, with seven pins. Set aside the connector cover.
    • If you DO have a jumper cable: Disconnect the connector at the bottom of your accessory cable by pulling it apart without twisting. The internal parts of the connector will be black, with seven pins. If you open the connector and find that it’s red inside, with two pins, you have disconnected your headlight by mistake.

  5. Plugin the USB Charger.
    • If you do NOT have a jumper cable: Inspect the inside of each connector end on your USB Charger. Take the end with seven pins, and carefully align it with the accessory cable you uncapped in the previous step. Press together without twisting until fully connected. Next, take the connector cover that you set aside in the previous step and install it onto the open end of your USB Charger. (See figure 3 .)
    • If you DO have a jumper cable: Install your USB Charger between the ends of the accessory cable you disconnected in step 4. Match the USB Charger connector end with pins to the accessory cable without pins, align the internal notches and external arrows, and press together firmly without twisting. Repeat with the other side of the  USB Charger and accessory cable. (See figure 5.)
    • Clip the USB Charger onto one of the cables. Locate a section of cable without a connector bulge, such as the brake cable housing coming out of the brake on the rider’s left side of the handlebar. Align the C-clips on the USB Charger with the cable and press the cable into the clips.
CAUTION: Ensure the cable coming out of the wiring harness junction is not pinched.

  6. Secure the USB Charger to the cable using zip ties. Pass one zip tie into the hole above one C-clip on the charger. Wrap the zip tie around the cable, through the zip tie lock, and pull to tighten and secure. Repeat with the other hole above the other C-clip.
NOTICE: If your bike does not have a jumper cable, protect the USB Charger from water by securing it with the connector-cover end pointing down so water will slide off from top to bottom. If necessary, loop the cable gently without pinching it.

  7. Use flat-side cutters to snip off zip tie excess. Ensure the cut is flush and smooth with no sharp point.

  8. Check that all cables are free of moving parts and that the handlebar and front wheel can turn freely. Ensure the brakes and bike operate normally.

  9. Reinstall the battery and test the bike fully before riding.

INSTALLATION: REAR OF BIKE

  1. Prepare your bike for installation. Turn off the bike, unlock and remove the battery, and press and hold the power button to discharge the remaining power.
  2. Locate your rear accessory cable. Your rear accessory cable is connected to the bundle of wires behind your seat tube. Examine these cables to find the one ending in a  connector cover. That’s your rear accessory cable.
  3. Uncap your accessory cable. Remove the connector cover from the accessory cable by pulling it apart without twisting. The interior of the accessory cable connector should be black, with seven pins. Set aside the connector cover.
  4. Plugin the USB Charger. Inspect the inside of each connector end on your USB Charger. Take the end with seven pins, and carefully align it with the accessory cable you uncapped in the previous step. Press together without twisting until fully connected. On the other end, install the connector cover you set aside in the previous step.
  5. Position the USB Charger against your seat tube. Gently fold the USB Charger, without pinching its cable, so that it is pressed against the back of your seat tube (not the seat post, which can move up and down). See figure 6. Make sure the USB port on the side of the charger isn’t blocked by other cables. Also ensure that the connector-cover end of the USB Charger is pointing down, which will help protect it from water damage.
  6. Secure the USB Charger to your seat tube. Pass one zip tie around the top of the USB Charger and the seat tube, and pull to tighten. Repeat at the bottom of the USB  Charger.
  7. Use flat-side cutters to snip off zip tie excess. Ensure the cut is flush and smooth with no sharp points.
  8. Check that the USB Charger and all cables are free of moving parts, especially the rear wheel, pedals, and chain. Ensure you can pedal the bike without any risk of your feet hitting the charger. Ensure the brakes and bike operate normally.
  9. Reinstall the battery and test the bike fully before riding.

TO COMBINE TWO USB CHARGERS IN ONE LOCATION

It’s possible to install two USB Chargers on either or both the front and back accessory ports, but do not combine more than two on either port.

  1. Install your first USB Charger according to the directions above, but stop before you install the connector cover (or jumper cable) onto the end of the first USB Charger,  and do not secure the charger to your bike. If you have already installed your first USB Charger, remove its connector cover or disconnect it from your jumper cable. You may also wish to loosen it from your bike by snipping the zip ties currently securing it.
  2. Install the second USB Charger onto the end of the first USB Charger. Match the internal notches and the external arrows and press the connectors together firmly, without twisting.
  3. Install the connector cover or jumper cable onto the open end of the second USB Charger. Press the connector together firmly without twisting.
  4. Secure the USB Chargers to non-moving parts of your bike using zip ties. Make sure that the chargers cannot interfere with any moving parts, your body (especially your feet).  Ensure the end cap points downward to reduce the risk of water intrusion.
    5. Reinstall the battery and test the bike fully before riding.

WARNINGS

Loose components, devices, cables, and other gear can potentially interfere with the safe operation of the bike, leading to serious injury or death.
Always secure the USB Charger, any USB device you’re charging, cables, and other components and gear away from moving parts or your bike and your body. The  USB Charger, any USB devices, charging cables, and other items should never interfere with the rider’s ability to operate the bike in any way including steering, braking, pedaling,  etc.
Using or adjusting an electronic device while riding an e-bike could lead to loss of control or an accident resulting in damage to the bike, property, serious injury,  and/or death. Always stop the bike in a safe area, stabilize the bike, and, if needed, dismount from the bike before using or adjusting an electronic device (e.g. plugging or unplugging a device, using a phone or GPS, etc.). Before any ride and after adjusting components or gear, ensure that the USB Charger and other items are secure,  clear of moving parts, etc.

Water intrusion to the USB Charger can lead to permanent damage to the USB Charger and the bike’s electrical system. Always keep the USB Charger fully connected to the wiring harness, the USB  Charger’s open end covered with the end cap or jumper cable, and the covered end pointed downward to allow water to slide off without entering the covered connector. Never submerge the product in water and protect the product from water intrusion. This product is rated IP65; it is water-resistant and not waterproof.

Water intrusion to the charging port of the USB Charger will cause the charger to turn off and not charge until the charge port is dry. To prevent damage and corrosion to the charge port from dust,  debris, water, and condensation, always keep the charging port cover secured in place when not in use.

Know the water resistance rating of any device you would like to charge with the USB Charger. If the device is not waterproof or sufficiently water- resistant, do not use or charge that device in wet conditions.

Battery range or bike performance may decline when using the USB Charger while riding. This amount of range decline will vary depending on the device being charged and other factors that always affect range (riding conditions, power assistance level, etc.). Practice in safe conditions (close to home, with a backup battery, etc.) while charging your device to determine how your device and riding conditions affect range before leaving on longer rides with fewer backup safety measures.

Do not rely on the USB Charger to keep you safe or charge your device in an emergency. Always let a friend or family member know where you plan to ride and when you expect to return.
