Product Information

The Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock is a security accessory designed to lock the rear wheel of your bike to the frame, reducing the risk of unauthorized use. It is sold separately and should only be used when the bike is turned off and parked. The lock comes with the necessary hardware and can be installed on the frame mounts of your bike. Before using the wheel lock, it is important to read and understand all warnings in the provided document as well as the owner’s manual that came with your bike. The latest version of these instructions and the owner’s manual can be found at radpowerbikes.com/help (USA/Canada), radpowerbikes.eu/help (Europe), or radpowerbikes. uk/help. (UK).

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare the bike:
    • Press the MODE or POWER button on the handlebar to power off the bike.
    • If necessary, use an Allen wrench to remove the bolt and washer from each frame mount. Recycle the hardware according to local rules.
  2. Determine which lock mounts to use:
    • Refer to Figure 4 in the manual to determine which pair of lock mounts is suitable for your bike.
  3. Position the lock:
    • Place the lock against the bike frame, following the instructions specific to your bike model (refer to Figure 5 and Figure 7 in the manual).
    • Ensure the lock mounts sit flat against the frame mounts.
    • Note: RadRunner 2 owners should refer to the notice on Page 3.
    • If needed, deflate the tire to 15 PSI to create more space around the tire and/or fender. If the lock still doesn’t fit, remove the fender using the method outlined in the appropriate documentation on the Help Center at radpowerbikes.com/help (USA/Canada), radpowerbikes.eu/help (Europe), or radpowerbikes.uk/help (UK).
  4. Install the bolts:
    • Position one of the bolts with a captive washer onto the T25 Torx wrench.
    • If using frame mount position #2, include a 5 mm spacer on each bolt between the lock and frame mount to avoid interference with the cable boss on the back of the frame (refer to Figure 7).
    • If your bike frame has three threaded holes on the frame mount, use the middle threaded hole (see circle on Figure 6).
    • Insert the bolt through the appropriate lock mount for your bike and thread it into the frame mount a few turns (refer to Figure 6 and Figure 7).
    • Repeat the process for the second bolt.
  5. Secure the bolts:
    • Use a torque wrench with a T25 Torx bit to tighten each bolt to a maximum of 5.5 Nm.
    • Ensure the lock is secure and does not rattle.
    • Do not overtighten the bolts as it may prevent the thumb lever from operating smoothly and can damage the bolt and lock.

OVERVIEW

The Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock is designed to lock the rear wheel to the frame to help reduce the risks of unauthorized use. The lock should be used only when the bike is turned off and parked. Do not operate the lock when it is not installed on the bike.

NOTICE: No bike lock can prevent a determined, highly skilled, and equipped thief in every possible scenario. The Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock will reduce your risk of theft and can reduce your risk even further when used with the Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock Security Chain (sold separately). The security chain allows you to secure the bike frame and wheel(s) to an unmovable structure designed for bike security, such as a bike rack. Additional locks and accessories can be purchased at radpowerbikes.com (USA/Canada), radpowerbikes.eu (Europe), or radpowerbikes.UK (UK).

LOCK INSTALLATION

  1. Determine where to install the lock. Locate the pair of mounting points (“frame mounts”) that you will use to attach the Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock. The location of the frame mounts will vary depending on your bike model. Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 to determine the location of your frame mounts. If your bike model is not illustrated, please visit the Help Center for the most current version of this manual at radpowerbikes.com/help (USA/Canada), radpowerbikes.eu/help (Europe), or radpowerbikes.uk/help (UK).
  2. Prepare the bike. Press the “MODE” or the “POWER” button at the handlebar to power off the bike. Your bike may come with hardware pre-installed on the frame mounts. Use an Allen wrench to remove the bolt and washer from each frame mount, if necessary. Recycle the hardware according to local rules.
  3. Determine which lock mounts to use. The Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock attaches to the frame mounts using one of three pairs of lock mounts. Refer to Figure 4 to determine which of the lock mounts to use.
  4. Position the lock. Place the lock into position against the bike frame, according to your bike model (Figure 5 and Figure 7 ). Make sure the lock mounts sit flat against the frame mounts. RadRunner 2 owners see the notice on Page 3.
    • TIP: If it is diffi cult to fi t the lock inside the frame, defl ate the tire to 15 PSI to create more space around the tire and/or fender. If the lock is still too diffi cult to install, remove the fender using the method outlined in the appropriate documentation located on the Help Center at radpowerbikes.com/help (USA/Canada), radpowerbikes.eu/help (Europe), or radpowerbikes.uk/help (UK).

  5. Install the bolts. Position one of the bolts with a captive washer onto the T25 Torx wrench.
    • a. For frame mount position #2 only: You MUST include a 5 mm spacer on each bolt, between the lock and frame mount (Figure 7 ).
    • NOTICE: Failure to use the 5 mm spacers will cause interference with the cable boss on the back of the frame, causing rubbing and damage.
    • b. If your bike frame has three threaded holes on the frame mount, use the middle threaded hole on the frame mount (see the circle on Figure 6 ).
    • c. Make sure to insert the bolt through the appropriate lock mount for your bike, and thread it into the frame mount a few turns (Figure 6 and Figure 7 ). Do not completely tighten the fi rst bolt yet, or the second bolt will be very diffi cult to install. Repeat for the second bolt.
  6. Secure the bolts. Use a torque wrench with a T25 Torx bit to torque each bolt to 5.5 Nm maximum. Ensure the lock is secure and does not rattle.
    • NOTICE: Do not overtighten the bolts. Overtightening the bolts will prevent the thumb lever from operating smoothly and can damage the bolt and lock.
  7. Inflate the tire and reinstall the fender, if applicable. Make sure to infl ate the tire to the recommended PSI printed on the tire sidewall. Reinstall the fender, if applicable, according to its instruction manual.

  8. Test the lock.
    • a. To lock the wheel: Turn the key clockwise and slide the thumb lever toward the wheel lock opening until the shackle locks in the fully closed position (Figure 8 ). Then turn the key counterclockwise to lock the shackle in this position. Make sure the shackle does not interfere with any spokes or the rim of the wheel. If the shackle does interfere, you may need to change the lock mount position (Figure 4 ).
    • b. To unlock the wheel: The thumb lever will retract very quickly upon unlocking, so be extremely careful that your hands and fi ngers are clear of the thumb lever’s retraction path before unlocking the wheel lock. Turn the key clockwise to retract the thumb lever and shackle (Figure 9 ). Always unlock the wheel before riding.
    • CAUTION: Pinch Hazard. Do not place fi ngers or any other objects near the path of the retracting thumb lever when unlocking the wheel lock. Doing so can cause injury.
  9. Remove the key (USA and Canada only). Remove the key from the lock before riding your bike. If your wheel lock was purchased in the EU/UK, the key is removable only when the lock is closed and secured.
    • NOTICE: Take a photo or record the 4-digit key code engraved on the key in the event that you need to order a new key.
  10. Test the lock and bike fully before riding. Refer to the next section for use with the Rad Fat Tire Wheel Lock Security Chain.

NOTICE FOR ROADRUNNER 2 OWNERS

  • Some RadRunner 2 models with fenders may require an additional spacer(s) to be installed between the frame mounting point and the rear fender to provide additional clearance for the lock.
  • If the fender sits too high and prevents the lock from being installed on the frame mounting points, you will need to remove the fender and reinstall with an additional 5 mm spacer (or two spacers and the 20 mm bolt, if necessary) between the fender and frame mounting point to provide additional clearance.
  • See the “RadRunner Full Fenders Installation Guide” article at radpowerbikes.com/help.
  • (US/Canada) and radpowerbikes.EU/help. (EU/UK) for instructions on removing the rear wheel and reinstalling the rear fender.
