PREPARATION
-
Start engine for 10 minutes approximately or until it reaches its normal temperature.
-
Stop engine then disconnect the spark plug and connect wires. Have the wires marked with number to distinguish and reconnect correctly.
-
Remove all dirt and any debris around the spark plugs. It is strongly recommended to wear eye protection and make cleaning with compressed air. Store all neatly on a clean and level surface. This helps to identify the cylinders having a problem comparing: the appearance of each spark plug to the compression level of the corresponding cylinder.
-
On vehicles with a standard distributor, disconnect the cable from the coil (high voltage cable) of the distributor cap and attach it to a proper grounding or disable the ignition by disconnecting the positive terminal (BAT) of the coil. For vehicles with no distributor, disable the ignition system by removing the electronic ignition fuse control module or unplug the crankshaft position sensor.
NOTE: Consult the appropriate service manual to determine which element or fuse must be temporarily removed. -
Remove the air fi lter of the carburetor or throttle body and the control block in open position.
NOTE: NEVER put anything into the throttle body, as this can cause internal damage to the engine. On vehicles with injection in the intake port, remove the covers throttle control (as needed) and lock the position control of full throttle. But, the reading of pressure got from this method is not so accurate.
TESTING
- Connect the quick locking head of air gauge assembly to the pipe of the rubber cone hose then screw the pipe in or push the erubber hose into the spark plug hole.
- Run engine for at least four compression cycles or until the pressure stops rising. Then cut the engine and note the value.
- Remove the tester and return air gauge to zero. Fit the spark plug and the connecting wires back and continue the test of the next cylinder
RESULTS ANALYSIS
- If the cylinder is working properly, the pressure must increase with each compression cycle then climb up to the max. The pressure of each cylinder for the same vehicle must be in accordance with the standard set by the manufacturer.
- If the pressure remains the same or does not increase after several cycles of compression, the valve is probably clogged.
- If the pressure in two adjacent cylinders is not greater than 20lbs, or inferior to another cylinder then the cylinder head gasket is to be damaged.
- If the pressure is much higher than the standard established by the manufacturer, it is possible that there are residues of carbon.
- If there are significant differences in pressure between the cylinders, put a teaspoon of SA30 oil in each of them and then try again. If after that, the pressure has increased too much the problem can come from improper installation of the cylinder or the piston ring. If the pressure has not changed then control the valve.
- Refer to the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions for the pressure standard of the cylinder.
WARNINGS
- This tester is only suitable for gas cylinder (car or motorcycle). Do not use it on the diesel cylinder of car. Be careful, the high temperature of pressure during test.
- During test, if the reading of air gauge is getting up but getting down after the engine is stopped then the stop valve in the gauge is broken and had to be sent for repairment.
