APPLICATION

The tool kit described in this instruction manual is required to insert the driveshafts into the hub. This kit works together with the OM 8032 (PTO shaft/ spline puller).
The kit is particularly necessary if the profile of the spline housing of the driveshaft has a high degree of accuracy of adjustment in relation to the profile of the spline housing of the hub.
The adapters in the kit allow the use both on driveshafts fixed with nuts (commercial use) and on those fixed with bolts (e.g. VW/Audi).
In addition, the kit includes two adapters with which the CV joints can be separated from the drive shaft.
A prerequisite for the use of these adapters is a slide hammer with sliding rod.
The kit is also suitable for inserting the hub.

FITTING THE DRIVE SHAFT

  • Mount the hub extractor (not included in the supply) on the hub so that the bell is exactly inside the support in the middle of the flange.

Warning : if the drive shaft had previously been removed using the hub extractor, you need to remove the flange and then refit it turned

  • Connect the suitable adapter (for threadings) to the thread on the drive shaft head.

Warning : due to partly high traction forces, the adapter must be fully tightened!

  • Place the drive shaft from the rear side, in front of the profile of the hub’s wedge-shaped groove. Place the thrust screw on the front side, through the profile of the hub’s wedge-shaped groove. Now connect the spindle with the adapter on the drive shaft head, tightening the spindle support thread all the way (M12x1,25). Also use the hexagon at the end of the screw for this operation.
  • Screw the support into the bell of the hub extraction device and fit the support bushing with the thrust bearing.
  • Now set the bell on the thrust screw and place it accurately in the support in the middle of the flange.
  • Then screw the nut onto the thrust screw until the support bushing adheres to the thrust bearing.
  • Now insert the drive shaft through the nut, using the suitable wrench.

Warning : especially when you begin the insertion procedure, make sure that the profiles of the spline’s seat, both of the drive shaft and the hub, are perfectly matched (one inside the other).

REMOVING THE HOMOKINETIC JOINT
In some cases you may have to separate the homokinetic joint from the drive shaft in order to replace the drive shaft’s sleeve, on the wheel side, and even wash and lubricate the joint. The difficulty consists in overcoming the tension force of the fastening ring that connects the joint to the shaft. You can easily loosen the joint by carefully aiming a few blows in the exact direction of the traction (do not tilt).

For the foregoing operation, there are two adapters for slide hammer with a suitable sliding rod. One adapter with M16x2,0 outer thread for all the traction sockets and one adapter with M16x2,0 inner thread for both tie rods (VAG)

These adapters are used to connect the relating adapter-threaded to the drive shaft head and to a slide hammer with a suitable sliding rod (not included in the supply- optional ref OM 4022).

The M18x1,5 adapters’ inner thread is suitable for several types of sliding hammers. For the application described in this document, all you will need are sliding hammers weighing from 1 up to 3 kilos.

  • Screw in the relating adapter thread on the drive shaft head.
  • Connect one of the fitting adapters, suitably sized, with the adapter-thread.
  • Now connect the sliding hemmer’s slide rod with the fitting adapter

In most cases, during assembly, simply hold down the drive shaft with one hand and simultaneously beat the hammer in the opposite direction. If the joint is firmly locked you may need to remove the drive shaft and insert it into a screw counter-support.
