Other information
For illustration purposes, the silentblock housing on the suspension arm is brown and the silentblock is engraved with the word “TOP” in white to indicate its upper position. Please note that some images are distorted for better illustration. The silentblock replacement tool can be used for removal and installation.
Note: Risk of damage to the tool!
- If you have used an impact spanner or air gun to move the nut on the threaded rod of the tool, either for assembly or disassembly, the threaded rod could be damaged by the force of the air gun or impact spanner, especially if the silentblock is blocked.
- An impact spanner should NOT be used to activate the silentblock replacement tool. Use a frame spanner or socket spanner (width between sides: 46 mm).
- The term “suspension arm silentblock housing” is often abbreviated to “silentblock housing” for easier reading.
PREPARATION
Before disassembling the silent block, carry out the following steps according to the corresponding repair instructions in the service manual, observing the safety instructions given.
- Block the trailer wheels at the front and rear to prevent the trailer from moving.
- OBSERVATION: Risk of shifting
- If you do not use chocks, the vehicle may move, which may result in serious injury or death.
- Secure the vehicle with chocks to prevent movement.
- Evacuate all air from the suspension system.
- Mount the jacks on the axle
- Remove the link arm trunnions from the suspension bracket.
- Remove the shock absorbers from the suspension
- Lower the axle
ASSEMBLY
Preparing the assembly for the removal of the rubber buffer
The silencer block removal tool (hereinafter referred to as the assembly and removal tool) consists of a threaded rod (1), two thrust washers (2), a bearing (3), two further thrust washers (2), a cover plate (4), a receiving tube or sleeve (5) and a nut unit (9), as shown in Figure 1.
Before disassembling the silentblock, mount the tool correctly. (1) To do this, place the tool components on the threaded rod in the order shown (fig. 2):
- 2 Axial washers (2)
- Bearing (3)
- 2 Axial washers (2)
- Sealing plate or cover (4)
- Receiving sleeve (5)
When mounting the removal tool, always make sure that the end of the receiving sleeve (5) The side without the centring pin is at the end of the cover plate (fi g. 4) The centring end (fig. 3) of the receiving sleeve is used to centre the tool with the silentbloc housing on the suspension arm.
Disassembly of the silentblock
Silent blocks should always be replaced on both sides of the axle. Before replacing a silent block with another to ensure that the silent blocks remain in the same position, it is important to note which point is marked in the centre of the silent block and to transfer this point to the centre of the suspension arm housing.
Silencer block removal procedure
- Mark the centre point of the silentblock and transfer this point to the centre of the housing in the suspension arm. Place the silentblock (see detail indicated by the arrow) on the pivot bushing (fig.4).
- Using a white marking pen, draw a line (fig. 5) on the outside of the suspension arm housing. This line marks the orientation of the rubber bush dynamics in the arm housing and will be used to correctly orient the position of the new rubber bush during installation.
- WARNING: Risk of accident
- If the silent blocks are not installed correctly, the stability of the vehicle will be reduced and this
- could result in death or serious injury.
- Make sure that the installation position is correct.
- Lubricate the thrust bearing (3), washers and threaded rod (1). Use standard grease.
- Insert the threaded rod (1) of the correctly preassembled disassembly tool into the muffl er until the relay sleeve (5) fi ts into the muffl er housing in the arm (6). The push plate with nut (9) is placed on the other end until it stops against the muffl er block (fig. 6).
- Place a spanner on the nut of the threaded rod (1). Turn until the thrust plate (9) pulls the silent-block assembly fully into the receiving sleeve (5).
- Install the removal tool.
- Continue to push the pivot sleeve until it is forced into the widened section of the tapered receiving tube (5), from where it can be easily removed.
- Reverse the direction of rotation of the spanner for the removal tool.
- Remove the damaged silentblock and clean the receiver sleeve with a wire brush to remove any foreign material.
INSTALLATION
Preparing the tools for mounting the silentblock
The silentblock assembly tool (hereinafter referred to as the tool) consists of a threaded rod (1), two axial washers (2), a bearing (3) and two further thrust washers (2), a cover plate (4), a receiving tube or sleeve (5), a centring washer or disc (8) and a nut unit (9).
When using the clamp, always position the ring centred against the silentblock housing in the suspension arm.
Before mounting the new silent block on the suspension arm, assemble the tooling by mounting the following components on the threaded rod (1) see detail (figure 8):
- 2 Axial washers (2)
- Bearing (3)
- 2 Axial washers (2)
- Cover or cover plate (4).
Installation of the silentblock
- Lubricate the thrust bearing (3), washers and threaded rod (1).
- Apply standard tyre mounting grease evenly to the silentblock housing (6) as shown in Figure 9 and to the entire outer surface of the new silentblock (7) as shown in Figure 10.
- Use a mounting paste
- WARNING: Risk of accident
- If you do not use an appropriate lubricant when installing the silent-block, you risk reduce vehicle stability and cause serious injury or death.
- DO NOT lubricate with oil or grease
- Insert the new rubber buff er (7) into the end of the tool sleeve or down tube (5) on the side opposite the centring ring. Ensure that the new silentblock is correctly aligned with the horizontal line of the tool sleeve or down tube by marking the silentblock to coincide with the horizontal line of the tool sleeve (fi g.11). The centre point of the silent clock must coincide with the horizontal line marked on the tool sleeve or receiver tube. The orientation indicator marked “TOP” must be at the top as shown in fi gure 10. If this is not the case, the silentblock must be repositioned.
- Using the centring disc (8), push the silentblock (7) fully into the cylinder sleeve as shown in figure 12.
- Insert the threaded rod (1) of the pre-assembled installation tool from the nut side through the silentblock bracket housing, ensuring that the cover or locking plate (4) is correctly positioned against the silentblock housing (6), as shown in fi gure 13
- Slide the sleeve or down tube (5) onto the threaded rod (1); the centering ring of the sleeve must be centered with the silentblock housing on the suspension arm (6). Ensure that the horizontal line of the sleeve or down tube is aligned with the horizontal line previously marked on the suspension arm (Figure 14).
- Turn the spindle nut (1) with a spanner and force the silentblock (7) into the sleeve (6) until the sleeve is completely free (figure 15).
- CAUTION: Risk of accident
- Incorrect support of the bushing with the silentbloc housing on the suspension arm may allow it to fall and thus cause injury or material damage.
- Prevent the down tube from falling to the ground.
- Remove the sleeve and continue to insert the rubber block until it is completely out of the housing.
- Dismantle the tooling completely.
- Check the spacing and readjust if necessary. Figure 16 shows an example of 1300 mm spacing.
- Check the accuracy of the silentblock. Make sure that the word “TOP” (in white as a guide) is on the top and that the horizontal mark on the repositioned silentblock is in a straight line with the mark previously made on the arm housing sleeve (Fig. 17). If these points do not coincide, it must be removed and refitted.
- Remove the silent block from the opposite side of the shaft as described in section 3 and fi t a new silent block as described in section 4.
Finals Steps
When replacing the silent blocks, carry out the following fi nal steps in accordance with the relevant instructions and the associated repair and maintenance manual, observing the specifi ed safety instructions and tightening torques:
- Lifting the shaft
- Install the link arm onto the bracket bolt and tighten it lightly.
- Mount the shock absorbers
- Remove the hydraulic jack
- Fill the pneumatic system with air
- Remove the wheel chocks
- Adjust the height of the suspension
- Adjust axle alignment
- Tighten suspension bolts and shock absorbers
