  • Do not short-circuit batteries, permanent damage to batteries may result.
  • Unplug a battery by holding the connector itself and not by pulling at its cord.
  • Never put a battery into water or seawater.
  • Store batteries in a cool dry place.
  • Avoid batteries being used in an airtight compartment. Ventilation should be provided inside the battery compartment otherwise batteries may generate hydrogen gas, which could cause an explosion if exposed to an ignition source.
  • Do not subject batteries to an adverse conditions such as extreme temperature, deep cycling and excessive overcharge/over-discharge.
  • If find any noise, excessive temperature or leakage from a battery, please stop its use.
  • When the battery is hot, please do not touch it and handle it, until it has cooled down.

  • The battery must be prevented from touching the motorized product’s apron.
  • Never drop, knock or puncture the battery or immerse it in liquid.
  • Do not dispose of the battery by burning it. Risk of explosion
Before installation or commissioning, charge the battery fully using the external NIMH BATTERY CHARGER (not supplied).

INSTALLING THE BATTERY

Attention

  • The three components – solar panel, battery, and drive – must be installed on the same side of the motorized product.
  • The battery must be protected from rain (IPX4).

The shape of the battery has been specially designed for installation in a corner for greater discretion. The battery can be installed behind a runner (A), at the rear (B) or under the housing of the motorized product, under the window frame, or in the corner of an interior wall (C): choose according to the configuration and type of motorized
product. sOmfy RS100 9.6V NIMH Battery Stick-fig-1When installing on the rear of the housing (B), Somfy recommends using pop rivets to be riveted via the interior of the housing.

Make an opening on the rear of the housing in order to feed the battery cable inside:

  • Cut a half-oblong 10 mm in diameter and 15 mm long from the edge of the housing, as per the diagram.

Screw mounting

Somfy recommends screw-mounting the battery to ensure a secure hold over time and to facilitate after-sales operations.

  1. Remove the plastic covers from each end of the battery:
  2. Disconnect the cable from the battery connector to avoid damaging the cable during installation.
  3. Select the direction in which the battery is positioned according to the configuration ofyour installation and identify the position of the holes as per the corresponding diagram.
  4. Drill the battery fastening holes in the locations indicated.
    • Do not drill through the battery supports.
  5. Secure the battery using the steel pop rivets or screws with Ø 5 mm in the holes drilled.
    • When installing on the rear of the housing, Somfy recommends using pop rivets to be riveted via the interior of the housing.
    • Do not use countersunk screws.
  6. Reconnect the cable to the battery connector.
  7. Reposition the covers at each end of the battery and press until they clip into place.
    • Check that the cable grommet and the sealing pellet are correctly positioned under the covers.sOmfy RS100 9.6V NIMH Battery Stick-fig-4

Adhesive-mounting

  • Somfy does not recommend adhesive-mounting the battery, especially on non-smooth and porous surfaces such as plastering, concrete or wood.
  • The ambient temperature when applying the adhesive must be between 20°C and 38°C.
  • Clean the chosen installation points well using a degreasing agent and wipe the adhesive surface.
  1. Select one of the two flat surfaces on which to stick the adhesive in accordance with the configuration of your installation.
  2. Remove the protective paper from the adhesive and stick it to the flat surface of the battery selected.
  3. Remove the other protective paper from the adhesive and press the battery onto the cleaned surface using even force.

WIRING

Warning
Never cause a short circuit across the battery terminals. Risk of burns and explosion.

Attention

  • Do not cut or modify the cable.
  • The connections with the drive must be inside the housing of the motorized product.
  • A cable crossing a metallic wall must be protected and insulated by means of the cable grommet supplied on the cable.
  • Attach cables to prevent any contact with moving parts.
  • Somfy recommends placing the connectors between the end piece and flange and fixing the cables inside the housing of the motorized product.
Wire the 2-pin connector of the battery (A) to the 2-pin connector of the drive (B).

COMMISSIONING

  • Before commissioning, charge the battery fully using the external NIMH BATTERY CHARGER available in the Somfy catalog.

  • Once the battery is charged, disconnect the charger to be able to use the drive.
    Warning

  • Any use of another battery charger is prohibited.

  • Do not exceed the maximum charging time of 3.5 hours.

  • Do not disconnect the battery when commissioning.

  1. Connect the external battery charger power cable to a mains socket. The green indicator light flashes.
  2. Disconnect the solar panel connector (C) from the drive connector (D).
  3. Connect the external battery charger connector (E) to the drive connector (D). The indicator light on the charger turns solid yellow while the battery is being charged.
  4. Wait until the LED turns green: the battery charging phase is complete.
  5. Disconnect the charger from the main socket.
  6. Disconnect the external battery charger connector (E) from the drive connector (D).
  7. Connect the solar panel connector (C) to the drive connector (D).

BATTERY CHARGING

After installing and commissioning the RS100 SOLAR io kit (drive, Somfy battery, Somfy solar panel), the battery charges with electrical energy via the solar panel.
The electrical energy transmitted by the solar panel is stored by the battery to supply the drive.

NOTE: It is possible to check the battery’s actual charge level via the TaHoma application. To do this, beforehand, an order to raise the motorized product is necessary to update this level.

PROTECTING THE BATTERY AGAINST EXCESSIVE DISCHARGE.

Normal voltage
The drive works normally.

Response to low battery
When the Up, or Down button is pressed, the drive checks the battery voltage:
if it is low (or the shutter is very heavy), the drive can reduce its speed to preserve the battery life, but if the voltage is too low, please refer to the following paragraph.

Response to insufficient battery
When the Up, my or Down button is pressed, the drive does not execute the command but makes a short up-and-down movement.

Response to the drained battery (less than 6.8 V for 9.6 V batteries, and less than 11.9 V for 16.8 V batteries)
When the Up, my or Down button is pressed, the drive no longer reacts to the command.

Thanks to the solar panel, the battery voltage will increase to 9.6 V or 16.8 V again, depending on the version used, and the drive will resume normal operation. There is nevertheless an alternative solution to recharge the battery using the NIMH BATTERY CHARGER available in the Somfy catalog.

MAINTENANCE

Attention

  • Any use of another battery charger is prohibited.
  • Never leave the battery discharged.

The life of the battery is about 8 years.
If the motorized product behaves abnormally as described in the previous section and the drive does not return to normal operation after a sunny period, there has probably been a major discharge from the battery. In this case, the battery needs to be charged using the Somfy-compatible external battery charger by a drive and home automation professional.

  • If this occurs on a regular basis, the battery must be replaced or the orientation of the solar panel must be changed by a drive and home automation professional.
