Description of the sharpener´s control elements

  1. Mains switch (“I” = on, “O” = off)
  2. Grinding wheel
  3. Unlock key (to be able to remove the insert)
  4. Safety switch (prevents the sharpener from being switched on without correctly attached insert)
  5. Power cable
  6. Slots for attaching an insert
  7. Four holes to bolt down the sharpener

Description of the inserts
The three enclosed inserts are suitable for the grinding of different tools.
Insert 1: The insert is used to grind chisels, small or wide ripping chisels or the like. The purpose of the integrated magnet is to hold the tool firmly in place. The small plastic insert can be attached from the side if the tool is very small (so that the magnet can hold the tool tightly). The angle of the grinding of the tool tip can be adjusted laterally (pay attention to the marking).

Installation

  • In order for the sharpener to have a stable stand while performing the grinding work, it is necessary to fasten it on a suitable surface, e.g. on a stable work table (workbench) using 4 screws.
It is also possible to mount the sharpener on a sufficiently large wooden plate and then fasten the wooden plate to the work table (workbench) using screw clamps. The sharpener can be easily dismantled and stored if you don’t need to use it.

  • Position the sharpener so that the grinding disc points to the front, towards you, and then bolt down the sharpener using 4 suitable screws.

Connection

  • Switch off the sharpener, move the mains switch on the top to the “O” position (switched off).
  • Connect the mains plug to an easily accessible standard mains socket. Lay the mains cable so that it does not hinder you in your work. Protect the mains cable from sharp edges.

Attaching/replacing an insert

  • Before you replace an insert, you have to switch off the sharpener. Move the mains switch on the top to the “O” position (switched off).

Important!
Wait until the grinding wheel has come to a complete standstill.

  • Press the unlock key and pull the insert upwards and remove it.
  • Afterwards, attach a different insert to the sharpener. To this end, the insert is attached to both slots on the left and right and pushed down until the hook on the unlock key engages with the opening of the insert.
Check that the insert fits securely. You should no longer be able to pull it upwards and out.

Once the insert has been attached correctly, the safety switch will be activated. Only then can the sharpener be operated.
If the insert is not inserted or not fully inserted, the safety switch will prevents startup of the grinding wheel.
Inserts that are not required can be attached to the left and right on the sharpener.
Should they disturb you during the grinding process, you may store them in a suitable place.

Sharpening chisels/ripping chisels

Important!
Please consult the chapter “Safety Instructions”!

  • Install the respective insert correctly. For this purpose, refer to the chapter “Description of the inserts” and “Attaching/replacing an insert”.CONRAD 2522494 Sharpener - control elements 4
  • Position the tool (e.g. a ripping chisel) so that the magnet (2) retains the tool (3a). For small tools, a small plastic insert (4) can be attached on the side so that the magnet is able to retain the tool (3g).
  • The angle of the blade of the tool is adjustable. Unfasten the locking knob (3), adjust the angle as desired and refasten the locking knob (3b and 3c). Focus on your tool while adjusting the angle.
  • When you switch on the sharpener (switch position “I”), the grinding wheel will starts to rotate. After a few seconds the device will reach the normal number of  evolutions.
  • The tool can be evenly sharpened over the entire width by lateral movement of the slide (3d). The magnet in the slide ensures that the tool can be guided neatly. Move the tool slowly in the direction of the grinding wheel to grind the respective materials off the tip of the tool (3e). Make sure the tip of the tool is sharpened without  emoving too much material (3f).
  • The transparent cover (1) prot ects you from a large part of the metal particles/sparks. Furthermore, it allows the control of the grinding process.
  • If you do not wish to grind another tool, switch the sharpener off (switch position “O”). Wait until the grinding wheel has come to a complete standstill.

Sharpening knives/scissors

Important!
Please consult the chapter “Safety Instructions”!

  • Install the respective insert correctly. For this purpose, observe the chapter “Description of the inserts” and “Attaching/replacing an insert”.CONRAD 2522494 Sharpener - control elements 5

  • The two slots (1) are intended for the sharpening of knives. The long slot (2) is used for the sharpening of scissors.
Sharpening corrugated or serrated knives/scissors is not possible as they will be damaged and become unusable!

  • When you switch on the sharpener (switch position “I”), the grinding wheel will start to rotate.
After a few seconds the device will reach the normal number of revolutions.

  • When sharpening knives, press them only slightly onto the grinding wheel. Do not apply strong pressure or force.
Depending on the blade type, the knife is to be sharpened on the left, on the right or on both sides. Start near the handle piece and pull the blade towards yourself (2a, 2b, 2c).

  • When sharpening scissors, open the scissors, and depending on the design of the scissors, move one or both blades one after another over the grinding wheel.
Do not apply strong pressure or force. Always move the blade over the grinding wheel starting from the joint to the tip (2d, 2e, 2f).

  • If you do not wish to grind another knife or pair of scissors, switch the sharpener off (switch position “O”). Wait until the grinding wheel has come to a complete standstill.

Sharpening drill bits

Important!
Please consult the chapter “Safety Instructions”!

  • Install the respective insert correctly. For this purpose, observe the chapter “Description of the inserts” and “Attaching/replacing an insert”.CONRAD 2522494 Sharpener - control elements 5

  • Remove the drill holder (1) from the insert.

  • Unfasten the locking wheel of the drill holder and insert a spiral drill bit (2) into the opening of the drill holder, as shown in the picture.

  • Fasten the locking wheel slightly so that the drill bit does not jiggle but can still be moved (1a).

  • Move the drill bit so that the tip touches the metal stop in the slot (1b).

  • Verschieben Sie den Bohrer so, dass die Spitze am Metallanschlag im Schacht ansteht (1b).

  • Push the V-insert (3) in the direction of the drill bit and carefully turn the drill bit back and forth until the V-insert can be pushed as far down possible (1c) and the tip of the drill bit still touches the metal stop.

  • Now tighten the locking ring so that the drill bit can no longer move.

  • Pull the V-insert back slightly and remove the drill holder with the fastened drill bit.

  • When you switch on the sharpening device (switch position “I”), the grinding wheel will start to rotate. After a few seconds the device will reach the normal number of revolutions.

  • Insert the drill holder in the grinding bracket of the insert (1e) and lightly hold the drill holder.
Do not press the drill bit onto the grinding surface too strongly, otherwise this will have a negative effect on the grinding result!

  • Move the swivel grinding table of the insert to the left and right (1f, see arrow imprint on the insert).

  • Remove the drill holder from the drill bracket and turn it 180° in order to grind the second drill bit in the same way (1g).
Both sides of the drill bit must be ground evenly (1h), as an incorrectly ground drill bit (1i) will not be able to drill a hole neatly.

  • After grinding and removing the drill bit, the sharpener must be switched off (switch position “O”). Wait until the grinding wheel has come to a complete standstill.

  • If you wish to grind another drill bit, proceed as described above.

Maintenance and Cleaning

  • The product is maintenance-free for you; never dismantle it (except for the tasks necessary for replacing the inserts or grinding as described in these operating instructions).

  • Switch off the product and disconnect it from the mains voltage before cleaning it. Then wait until the grinding wheel has come to a complete standstill.

  • The outside of the product should only be cleaned with a clean, soft, dry cloth.
Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or chemical solutions that could damage the housing (discolouring) or impair operation.

  •  Dust can be easily removed with a brush and a vacuum cleaner, if necessary.
