Safety instructions

Read and follow these instructions carefully and completely in order to ensure safe and proper use.
The instructions must be made available to all persons who use the instrument.
Keep for future reference.
The device may only be used by qualified electricians in the commercial field.
The respective accident prevention regulations established by the professional associations for electrical systems and equipment must be strictly met at all times.
The testers have been constructed and tested in accordance with the safety regulations for voltage testers and have left the factory in a safe and perfect condition.
To avoid an electric shock, observe the precautions when working with voltages exceeding 120 V (60 V) DC or 50 V (25 V) eff AC. In accordance with DIN VDE these values represent the threshold contact voltages (values in brackets refer to limited ranges, e.
g. in agricultural areas).
The tester must no longer be used if one or more func- tions fail or if no functionality is indicated.
Before using the tester, ensure that the device is in perfect working order. Look out e. g. for broken housing or leaking batteries.
If the safety of the user cannot be guaranteed, the tester must be switched off and secured against unintentional use.
Safety is no longer guaranteed in the following cases, for example:
− obvious damage
− broken housing, cracks in housing
− if the tester can no longer perform the measurements/ tests
− if the tester was stored for too long in unfavorable conditions
− transport stress
− leaking batteries
It is not permitted to use the tester during rain or precipitation.
A correct result display is guaranteed only within a temperature range of 0° … +40°C and a relative humidity of less than 80%.
Never use the tester in explosive environments.
Hold the tester and accessories by the designated grip areas only; indicators must never be covered.
The tester may be used only within the specified measurement ranges and in low-voltage installations of up to 1000 V.
The tester may be used only in the measuring categories it has been designed for.
The tester may not be used to test systems or system components for the absence of voltage.
Testing for the absence of voltage is only permissible with a suitable (2-pole) voltage tester / voltage meas- uring system which fulfils the requirements specified in DIN EN 61243.
The signal of the voltage test does not indicate type and/ or strength of voltage.
The tester must not be used with an open battery compartment.
Operational safety is no longer guaranteed if the tester is modified or altered.
The tester may be opened by an authorized service technician only.
The tester complies with all EMC regulations. Nevertheless, in rare cases it may disturb electric  deviceswith its electrical field or the  tester maybe disturbed by electrical devices.

Application

Please read this important information!
2.1 Intended use / Use for intended purpose
The METRALINE VT SENSE is a contactless voltage tester for alternating voltage testing at insulated wires without requiring direct contact with the test object. The voltage testing detects alternating voltages between 20 VAC and 1000 VAC (2 sensitivities).
The alternating voltage is indicated through a red LED, vibration and buzzing.
In addition, the METRALINE VT SENSE can test for the presence of magnetic fields and perform rotary field testing.
2.2 Use for other than intended purpose
Using the instrument for any purposes other than those described in these instrument operating instructions is contrary to use for intended purpose.
Use for purposes other than those intended may result in unforeseeable damage!
2.3 Liability and guarantee
The warranty provided by Gossen Metrawatt GmbH, and its liability, are governed by the  applicable contractualand mandatory statutory provisions.

Conducting tests

5.1 Preparation of testing
Before and after use, always check that the tester is working correctly (e. g. on a known voltage source).

  • Switch on the tester by pressing the ON/OFF button for a short time.

  • The buzzer, red LED and vibration switch on for short time as a self test.

  • By default, the 50 VAC … 1000 VAC testing range is activated. Press the ON/OFF button briefly for switching to the 20 VAC … 1000 VAC range.
If a voltage source with more than 50 V is in the vicinity of a 20 V voltage source, the tester will detect the stronger source.

  • A blinking red LED indicates readiness.

  • The tester is switched off by pressing ON/OFF for a longer time.

  • The tester automatically powers off after approx. 3 minutes.

5.2 Torch Light

  • Press the torch light button. As long as you hold the torch button, the light is on.

5.3 Voltage testing

  • Move the device slowly along the DUT, e. g. a cable.
  • If the tester detects an alternating voltage in the 20 VAC … 1000 VAC mode, the test tip flashes red, the tester vibrates and the buzzer sounds.
  • If the tester detects an alternating voltage in the 50 VAC … 1000 VAC mode, the test tip lights up in solid red, the tester vibrates and the buzzer sounds.
  • The position of the earth conductor in DUT may influence the testing.

5.4 Magnetic field testing

  • Bring the area of the tester that is marked with the magnetic symbol near the test object. The test tip will light up yellow if a magnetic field is detected.

5.5 Rotary field test (RF)
Entering the rotary field test mode:
Press both buttons for approximately 3 seconds. Once the yellow rotary field LED lights up, the rotary field test is ready for testing.
Auto power-off:
After 3 minutes of inactivity.
Disable the rotary field test mode: Press both buttons for a short time.

Rotary field test:

  1. Enter the rotary field mode.
  2. Make sure that the yellow light is on and that the device does not vibrate.
  3. Touch the first conductor under test until the tester starts to vibrate.
  4. Move the tester away from the first conductor under test, it stops vibrating.
  5. Touch the second conductor under test until the tester starts to vibrate and the rotary field direction is indicated.
  6. Wait until yellow LED is dark and until the tester has stopped vibrating, before starting another test.

Rotary Field Indications:

  • red light: left rotary field (L1-L3, L2-L1 or L3-L2)
  • green light: right rotary field (L1-L2, L2-L3 or L3-L1)
  • blue light: the same phase (L1-L1, L2-L2 or L3-L3)
  • yellow light: ready
  • Red light at test tip and buzzing: Error – time between touching the two conductors under test was too long. Restart the test.

Rotary field test is optimized for CEE plugs.
Wiring can influence rotary field test.

Exchange of batteries

The red LED (without buzzing) indicates that the batteries need replacing.

  • Open the battery compartment by pressing on the square recess on the clip and pull of the battery compartment cover.
  • Replace the batteries according to the polarity indicated on the tester.
  • Put the battery compartment cover back on.

Confirm that the battery compartment cover is properly put back on prior to tests.
Do not throw used batteries into the household trash.
Observe the local regulations for disposal.
