Remove the outer fairing and windshield as follows
-
Place protective material on top of front fender to protect the paint from scratches or other damage.
-
Standing at the front of the motorcycle, loosen the three T27 TORX screws (Numbers 1, 2 & 3 in the image to the right) just below the windshield.
-
Raise and remove the windshield from between the inner and outer fairings.
-
Moving to the inner fairing side, remove the two T27 TORX screws outboard of the speakers (Numbers 4 &5 in the image to the right) on the left and right sides.
-
Turn the handlebar to the right and remove the T-27 TORX screw (Number 6 in the image to the right) by reaching in below the left side of the fair ing cap.
-
Turn the handlebar to the left and remove the T-27 TORX screw (Number 7 in the image to the right) below right side of the fairing cap.
CAUTION: On FLHX models, be sure to hold the out- er fairing in position as the last screw is removed. Without auxiliary lamps to hold it in position, the outer fairing will drop, possibly resulting in fairing or fender damage. -
Returning to the front of the motorcycle, remove the three screws below the windshield.
-
Tilting the outer fairing forward, remove the headlamp connector at the back of the headlamp assembly.
-
Lift the outer fairing off the motorcycle.
Remove the outer fairing and windshield as follows:
NOTE: Windshield may be left in place during outer fairing removal.

- Remove the top left and right screws just outboard of the fuel and volt gauges, respectively (previously loosened in step #3).
- Raise the outer fairing slightly and then rest on the protective fender pad.
- Squeeze two external tabs to disconnect the headlamp jumper harness connector.
- To avoid possible wire damage, disconnect the front turn signal lamp connectors and move to the bench area.
Radio Removal
Remove the radio from the dash cavity as follows:
- Disconnect and remove the CB module (Number 4 in image C, if equipped) from the factory radio. To do this disconnect the CB antenna and the 12-pin connector from the CB module. Once the connectors have been removed, remove the screw to separate the CB module from the radio.
- Disconnect the radio connectors behind the radio (See image C to the right). Not all motorcycles will be equipped with connector # 2.
- Using a long shank ball end socket, remove four 6mm hex bolt screws (two on the right, two on the left) to release radio or storage (FLHT) from the left and right radio support brackets. Use oblong holes in fairing brackets to access screws. (See image D to the right for reference
- Pull the radio or storage box (FLHT) forward (towards the front) to remove from the opening in the inner fairing.
