Respond to the questions below.

Scenario:

  • Tyson is working for a major weed-spraying contractor. He recently completed his ChemCert training in chemical use.
  • Tyson is leading a work crew spraying a noxious weed along a roadside. He has read the label on the chemical container. It states that the chemical is suitable for using on the specific weeds involved. Tyson notes the mixing and application rates. He notices that the label instructs that the chemical is likely to vaporise under certain weather conditions (when temperatures are over 40 degrees). He knows from his training that vaporization is a danger from that work practice and can be both a major safety risk and an environmental hazard. When the chemical turns from liquid to vapour it can become unstable and dissipate.
  • There have been reports of chemicals causing off-target damage some distance away after being blown by the wind or coming down in fog. No one in the crew knows the exact temperature but all agree that it is hot. They decide, however, to spray.
  • The next week they read in the paper that at a vineyard a kilometer from where they were spraying all the vines have died and there is a strong link by odour to the chemical used on the day. The award-winning vineyard crop was worth several million dollars and an inquiry into the records of registered chemicals used on that day and who used them, is under way.

a) Where did Tyson go wrong?
b) What are the likely long-term impacts of his mistake?
c) What should Tyson have done differently?
