Introduction
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain and care for
containerised nursery plants, including preparing for work, maintaining the
nursery environment and plants, and completing plant maintenance operations.
This unit applies to individuals who care for nursery plants under general
supervision with limited autonomy or accountability.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at
the time of publication.

Assessment Task 1: Written Assessment

Answer all questions in the space provided.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Workplace requirements applicable to health and safety in the workplace for nursery plant care
- Principles and practices of nursery plant care, including:
a. Basic plant knowledge as it applies to maintaining nursery plants
b. Common problems that may occur with containerised plants in a growing environment
c. Hygiene and quality control when tending nursery plants
Benchmark
You must get all questions 100% correct and all documentation requested in
this assessment is submitted to gain a satisfactory in this task.

Assessment Task 2: Preparing for Work
Student Instructions for this task:
For the purpose of this assessment, the supervisor is your assessor. The
Assessor is to clarify items the student is unsure about prior to commencing.
Student is to complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for assessment
by the due date.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Confirm care activities to be undertaken with supervisor
- Recognise potential hazards and risks and implement safe working practices to minimise risks to self and others
- Select appropriate tools and equipment for the task
- Select, fit and use personal protective equipment and clothing applicable to the task
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and you must answer all questions in full.
You must demonstrate that you are able to prepare for work in a retail nursery
setting.
All criteria listed in the Assessor’s Checklist must be met to the industry
standards specified in this unit.

Scenario
You are currently employed as a nursery worker at Trees in Newcastle, a retail
plant nursery. You have just been given work tasks from your supervisor to
maintain three (3) nursery plants.
The Nursery has their own “Nursery Operations and Practice” Booklet located in
your Resources Folder which is their Work Instructions and Procedures for the
Nursery.

You will be observed wearing and using PPE for the activities you must

Assessment Task 3: Maintain Nursery Plants
Student Instructions
This task cannot be completed until you have completed and submitted
Assessment Task 2: Prepare for Work.
Now that you have prepared for your work activities, you must now perform
them.
The Assessor is to clarify items the student is unsure about prior to
commencing. Student is to complete all tasks as stated and submit all work for
assessment by the due date.
You are required to identify the diseases in three nursery plants.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Follow hygiene practices to minimise risk of contamination
- Prepare and apply fertiliser according to work instructions
- Identify weeds and remove from pots as directed
- Block and space plants according to space requirements and instructions
- Prune plants using the required tools and safe work practices and according to instructions
- Stake and tie plants using the required materials and according to instructions
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and you must answer all questions in full.
You must demonstrate that you are able to maintain nursery plants.

Assessment Task 4: Complete Nursery Plant Maintenance Operations
Student Instructions
To ensure good nursery hygiene you are required to follow workplace procedures
to avoid contamination and to keep the workplace neat and tidy. You will
demonstrate the following skills to your Assessor over a period of time.
Complete all aspects of the Care Activity Plan for each of the three plants.
You will be required to have a good understanding of the following areas:
- Remove and dispose of any plant or other waste
- Clean tools and equipment
- Disinfect tools and equipment
- Maintain and store tools and equipment
- Identify and report unserviceable tools and equipment
- Record and report nursery plant care and maintenance
Benchmark
Using the Assessment Matrix below you are to achieve at least a rating of 4 to
be deemed satisfactory in this task. You must complete all activities in full
and you must answer all questions in full. You must demonstrate that you are
able to complete the plant maintenance operations and meet the criteria in the
Assessor’s Checklist through demonstration of these activities.
