3.2 Intended use®

  1. The Dräger Alcoates 4000 alcohol measuring instrument is used to measure  the concentration of alcohol in human breath. The measurement is used to determine the intoxication of people. No therapeutic measures may be introduced on the basis of the measurement.

Use

WARNING
Small parts of the instrument can come off and be swallowed.
► The instrument is not intended for children under the age of 3.
4.1 Prerequisites for use
The instrument is supplied having been calibrated in the factory. If the calibration date is more than 12 months ago, then the instrument should be calibrated, e.g. by DrägerService.

  • After the last alcohol consumption, please wait for approx. 15 minutes.
  • The wait time cannot be shortened by rinsing the mouth with water or a nonalcoholic drink.
  • Residual mouth alcohol or aromatic drinks (e.g. fruit juice), alcoholic mouth sprays and medicines can falsify the measurement.
  • Burping and vomiting can falsify the measurement result.

4.1.1 Prior to sampling

  • The test person should breathe regularly and calmly before sampling.
  • The test person must be capable of providing the minimum breath volume required for sampling.

4.1.2 Preparation for use

  1. Make sure that the batteries are charged and inserted.
  2.  Make sure that a clean mouthpiece has been fitted.

4.1.3 Switching instrument on and off
Switching on the instrument:

  1. Press the button and hold for approx. 1 second.
  2.  Wait until it shows it is ready to make a measurement.

Switch off the instrument:

  1. Press the button and hold for approx. 3 seconds.

The instrument will switch itself off 2 minutes after last being operated.
Switching off the instrument does not shorten the wait time for being ready to measure.
|4.2 Initial start-up
4.2.1 Standard wizard
When the instrument is switched on for the first time, the setup assistant is opened. This step is omitted for preconfigured instruments.
The following settings are made using the setup assistant:

  • Language
  • Date format
  •  Date
  • Time format
  • Time
  • Measurement unit

All settings can be retrospectively changed using the menu.
4.2.2 Country wizard
When the instrument is switched on for the first time, a country list opens. After selecting the required country, the country-specific settings are pre- configured.
Selecting language or measurement unit manually, for example, is then no longer necessary. All settings can be retrospectively changed using the menu.
NOTICE
Loss of default settings If changing the battery takes more than 5 minutes, then the date and time need to be reset. It is only possible to make a measurement with the time set.
4.3 Taking a breath sample
Use a new mouthpiece for every test person.
Do not apply a high concentration of alcohol to the sensor, e.g. by rinsing the mouth with high proof alcohol shortly before making the measurement. This reduces the life span of the sensor.

  1. Place new mouthpiece (order no. 83 25 250) on the mouthpiece receptacle (see page 2).
  2.  Press and hold the button for approx. 1 second until the startup screen appears.
  3.  Approx. 4 seconds later READY is displayed. The instrument is ready to perform a measurement.
  4.  Blow evenly and without interruption into the mouthpiece. When doing so, do not block the outlet opening of the mouthpiece with a hand.

While doing so, a continuous tone will sound. After a few seconds (depending on the instrument temperature and on the concentration measured), the measurement result is displayed.
Performing another measurement

  • To prepare for a new measurement, briefly press the button.
After the recovery time of the sensor (see “Technical Data” on Page 24), READY will be displayed.

4.4 Removing mouthpiece

  1. Pull the mouthpiece up and off the mouthpiece receptacle.
  2. Dispose of the mouthpiece in compliance with local regulations.

4.5 Menu control
Display the menu:

  1. Briefly press the button. The menu display is shown. If the button is not pressed for 3 seconds, it returns to being ready to measure.
  2. Briefly press the button again (within 3 seconds). The menu is displayed. The menu is left automatically after 30 seconds without pressing the button.

Navigating in the menu:

  • Briefly press the button.
Once the last entry is reached, then the next time the button is pressed, it jumps to the top again.
Confirm the selected feature or input:

  • Hold the button pressed. Leave the menu:

  • Select the Back menu item in sub-menus.

  •  Select the Measuring menu item in the main menu.

Change values:

  1. Briefly press the button until the required setting is reached. Press and hold the button to confirm the setting.

Troubleshooting

If the instrument malfunctions, an error message will appear. The number that appears under the message is for service purposes. If the malfunction does not disappear after switching the instrument on and off several times, then please contact Dräger Service or the distributor.

Malfunction/Error Cause Remedy
Instrument will not switch on. Battery flat. Change battery.
Volume too small / sample invalid. Test person is not blowing strongly enough
or with interruptions. Blow with more force and without interruption into the

mouthpiece.
Instrument outside the temperature range| Instrument is too warm or too cold.| Allow instrument to cool down or warm up.
↑ ↑ ↑ (over range)| Measuring range has been exceeded. Residual alcohol in the mouth can distort the measurement.| At least 15 minutes wait time must have passed since alcohol was last consumed through the mouth. (See Page 19).
Volume too small| Breath sample volume too small.| To repeat, press button. Repeat breath sample.
Volume too large| Measuring range exceeded.| Repeat breath sample.
Sample disruption| Irregular breathing out, abrupt ending or breathing in| Repeat breath sample.
Error number| Instrument error| Switch the instrument off and on again. If the error remains, contact Dräger Service or the distributor.

Maintenance

Have instrument calibrated once a year as the measurement uncertainty increases over time due to drift effects. Only have calibration and maintenance carried out by authorised persons, e.g. DrägerService.
6.1 Changing battery

  1. Switch off instrument.
  2.  Push the battery cover off.
  3.  Replace the battery (battery type: 3 V CR123A; order no.: 83 21 390). Ensure that the polarity is correct when doing so.
  4.  Push the battery cover back on.
  5. . Check whether the time has been set correctly.

If changing the battery takes more than 5 minutes, then the time needs to be reset. It is only possible to make a measurement with the time set.
6.2 Cleaning
The instrument should be cleaned with a cleaning agent based on ethanol. Cleaning the instrument:

  1. Wipe the instrument using a disposable cloth and the cleaning agent. Do not apply the cleaning agent directly onto the instrument. Make sure that no liquid enters the gas inlet.
  2. After cleaning, leave the instrument unpacked at room temperature (20-25 °C) for at least 24 hours.
  3.  Then use a breath alcohol test without alcohol to ensure that there is no residual ethanol inside the instrument and that the result “0.00” is displayed.

Disposal

This product must not be disposed of as household waste. It is therefore marked with the adjacent symbol. You can return this product to Dräger free of charge. For information please contact the national marketing organizations or Dräger.
Batteries must not be disposed of as household waste. They are therefore marked with the adjacent symbol. Dispose of batteries and rechargeable batteries at battery collection centers as specified by the applicable regulations.
