About these instructions

These instructions are divided into an illustrated section and a text section. The illustrated section can be found after the text section.
Read and follow these instructions carefully. These instructions contain important information on fitting, maintenance and care of your curtain. These instructions are an important document for the construction file. Should you have any questions after having read these instructions, please feel free to contact our customer service.
The term curtain used in these fitting instructions refers to the fire protection and smoke-tight version separately or in combination. If there are any differences, a specific reference is made to the respective version.

These instructions are applicable to the following curtain versions:

• Flex Fire
• Flex Smoke

Keep these instructions in a safe place for later reference.

Warnings used

The general warning symbol indicates a danger that can lead to

injury or death. In the text, the general warning symbol will be used in connection with the caution levels described below. In the illustrated section, additional instructions refer back to the explanation in the text section.

In this document, the term “curtain” refers to the fire protection curtain FlexFire.

General notes

The texts and diagrams in this manual have been created with the greatest care possible. For reasons of clarity, these instructions do not contain all the details for all product versions. This also applies to fitting, operation and maintenance. The texts and diagrams in these instructions are merely intended as examples.
Any guarantee for completeness is excluded and does not justify a complaint. Subject to technical changes.

Purchasing this product requires you to fit, test and maintain the Flex Fire curtain according to manufacturer specifications.

 Safety instructions

Intended use

A curtain with frame, guides etc. prevents fire or smoke from penetrating through wall openings when closed.
The FlexFire curtain was tested for 10,000 cycles in a long-term function test. The curtain is not suitable for opening and closing an opening several times a day. Intended use also includes the following:

• Follow the operating instructions.
• Observe the inspection and maintenance conditions.
• Only operate the curtain if it is technically sound and in perfect working order.
• Only commission the manufacturer or specialist companies for repairs and maintenance on the curtain.
• Comply with the respective national regulations and approvals.
• Only qualified and instructed personnel may perform fitting and maintenance.
• Electrical work may only be carried out by trained specialists.
• Do not make any alterations through attachments and conversions in order to not impair safety.
• Make sure that there is no risk of fire, gas, dust, steam, smoke, fire and explosion during cutting, grinding and welding.
• The fire protection and smoke-tight curtain is a textile curtain. Creasing is unavoidable, not functionally relevant and does not constitute grounds for a complaint.

If there are any holes in the curtain, contact the manufacturer immediately.

Non-intended use

The fire protection and smoke-tight curtain is not suitable for the following areas:

• Outdoor areas
• Wet areas

Neither the manufacturer nor supplier are responsible for damage resulting from non-intended use. The risk is borne solely by the user.

Fitting preparation

Check the following points before fitting:

• Do the opening dimensions of the wall correspond to the curtain data?
• In which building section is the proper fitting of the curtain ensured?
• Are all components present?
• Is the wall type suited for fitting of the curtain?
• Is the finished level of the floor known (metre line)?
• Is the floor level?
• Do other building regulations have to be observed?
• Is a 230 V power supply available to activate the control?

ATTENTION

Function of the brake in the Open position

The brake that holds the curtain in Open position can only function with a 230 V power supply.

▶  Secure the curtain on the barrel against rolling off.

▶  Remove the roll-off safeguard only after the control has been connected.
▶  After connecting the control, confirm the alarm with  . Press the stop button  . You can now remove the safeguard. The curtain remains in Open position. You can now operate the curtain using the Up and Down buttons. For this purpose, attach the magnet for the magnetic contact to the bottom strip.

Fitter qualification

Only commission suitably trained specialists to ensure proper installation of the curtain. In accordance with local official regulations, electric parts may only be connected by licensed specialist companies or specially trained personnel.

Fitting, maintenance and operation

• Only authorised persons may operate the curtain. These persons must read and understand these instructions beforehand.
• Use the supplied fitting parts such as plugs, screws and accessories.
• Use the plugs specified in section 2.7.
• Observe the minimum edge clearance of 50 mm for horizontal and vertical holes. Note the expansion direction of the plugs.
• Do not use a percussion drill for vertically perforated bricks and hollow bricks.
• The curtain consists of a glass filament fabric reinforced with a stainless steel thread. Additionally, the curtain is coated with silicone on both sides.
• At the edges and seams of the curtain, stainless steel threads may protrude.
• The edges of metal parts can be sharp-edged.
• Wear appropriate protective equipment during fitting.
• Parts of the product may be heavy. Please observe the safety regulations for lifting and fitting heavy equipment.
• Use suitable lifting equipment to fit the side guide rail and the curtain or curtain box.
• Secure the parts against falling over before and during fitting.
• Do not make any alterations through attachments and conversions in order to not impair safety.
• During controlled lowering, make sure that neither persons nor objects are located under the curtain.
• Do not place any objects under the curtain.
• Do not touch the moving parts of the curtain during opening and closing.
• Modifications to the curtain may only be made within the scope of the existing approval or certification. Any other modifications may only be made after consultation with the manufacturer.
• Do not modify or circumvent the safety devices.
• Follow all the steps in these instructions.
• Put the curtain out of operation if a dangerous operating condition occurs or if the curtain is damaged. Secure the curtain if necessary. Make sure that the curtain is repaired by a specialist immediately.

Spare parts and accessories

Only original spare parts are tested and approved.

Approved walls, wall thicknesses and fastenings

Before fitting, make sure that there are no gaps > 5 mm between the frame and wall components. Straighten any major unevenness before fitting.

Note :
Close the gaps between the wall-side profiles and uneven wall surfaces. This prevents flames and increased temperatures from impairing the partition.

Fitting in front of the reveal:

• Gaps ≤ 5 mm
  • The gaps must only be sealed with flexible silicone or acrylic for doors with smoke-tight function.

Fitting in the reveal:

• Gaps ≤ 5 mm
  •  Sealing not required
• Gaps > 5 – 15 mm
  • – Backfill with mineral wool of building materials class A1
• Gaps > 15 mm
  • Reducing through structural measures

When fitting the curtain, consider the following types and minimum thicknesses of walls, components and fixing materials.
Observe the country-specific approvals!
The floor in the passage area below the curtain, 150 mm to the left and right of the curtain, shall not be flammable.

Floor condition

The door opening and building floor must be completed before the curtain is fitted.

• If the floor is not level or has gaps, install a stainless steel floor rail (not supplied) on curtains with smoke-tight function.
• Do not exceed the maximum floor clearance of 15 mm for curtains without smoke-tight function. Straighten any major unevenness before fitting.

• Wall fitting

For wall fitting, fit the curtain box directly to the wall.

Information on the features of the curtain

Note that the curtain can meet individual requirements or a combination of fire protection and smoke-tight function.
The ID plate of the curtain is provided with the CE mark on the basis of Regulation (EU) No. 305 / 2011.
The number of the corresponding CE mark or Do number can be found on the
ID plate of the curtain.

The operator is responsible for the perfect condition of the curtain.
On-site changes to the curtain may lead to changes in the performance characteristics. The person carrying out any changes or deviations from these fitting instructions is responsible for said changes or deviations.
The fire protection and smoke-tight curtain is a textile curtain. Creasing is unavoidable, not functionally relevant and does not constitute grounds for a complaint.
If there are any holes in the curtain, contact the manufacturer immediately.
The curtain is not designed for repeated opening and closing. The number of cycles is defined as 3 – 5 cycles / day.
The curtain is intended for indoor use only. The curtain is not suitable for use in wet rooms.
For permissible walls and wall thicknesses, see Table 2.7.
For permissible fixing material, see Table 2.7.
Do not use the fire protection curtain in track-bound conveyor systems.

Fitting

Fixing the door frame

Fastening of the side guide and the curtain box depends on the construction subsurface.

• Only use building authority-approved plugs.

Installing the smoke detector

The fitting of the hold-open device Flex Control is determined by the approval.
Please inquire about any short-notice changes to the fitting conditions if necessary. Observe the country-specific approvals! Put the hold-open device into operation before removing the curtain safeguard after hanging in the curtain barrel.

Operation

Only authorised persons may operate the curtain. These persons must read and understand these instructions beforehand.

• During controlled lowering, make sure that neither persons nor objects are located under the curtain.
• Do not place any objects under the curtain.
• Do not touch the moving parts of the curtain during opening and closing.
• Do not modify or circumvent the safety devices.
• Put the curtain out of operation if a dangerous operating condition occurs or if the curtain is damaged. Secure the curtain if necessary. Make sure that the curtain is repaired by a specialist immediately.
• When open, the curtain barrel is located in a housing made of galvanized sheet steel. The housing is located above the opening to be closed.
• An electromagnetic brake holds the curtain in the Open position. The centrifugal brake is integrated into the operator.
• In the case of fire, the dead weight of the bottom rail triggers closing. The curtain is guided in lateral profiles. The profiles contain 2 magnetic contacts. The magnetic contacts stop the curtain at the curtain’s travel limit thanks to an electromagnetic brake.

Checking and maintenance

In case of malfunctions or damage to the curtain during operation, commission a specialist company to inspect or repair the curtain immediately.
The owner of the curtain or a person authorised by the owner is responsible for proper maintenance of the curtain.
Expert maintenance must be performed and documented periodically to ensure proper function of the curtain.

Checks by the operator performed at least once a month:

• General visual inspection of the curtain and frame for damage
• Checking that no equipment has been added or removed that may affect the operation of the curtain
• Checking the following components:
  • Self-closing mechanism
  • Hold-open device
  • Function of the fire alarm system (smoke detector)
• Checking the seals (with the smoke-tight version) for wear and correct position
• Exchanging damaged seals
• Checking the closing speed; permissible speed range: 0.08 m/s to 0.2 m/s

Checks by a specialist company at least once a year:

• Fixings:

  • Checking the connection of the side guides and curtain box to the wall subsurface
  • Checking that all fitting screws are tight.

• Door travel properties:

  • Checking for perfect door travel
  • Checking for unusual noise during opening and closing

• Curtain and seals:
  Checking for damage, such as wear, creasing, wire tearing and chafing

• Information signs and ID plates : Checking for legibility

Cleaning and care

Galvanized surfaces

ATTENTION

Metal cleaning tools

Metal cleaning tools may damage the surface, resulting in corrosion.

▶  Never use sponges containing metal, steel wool or steel brushes.

• Clean galvanized surfaces with clear water.
• If necessary, clean off tough-to-remove dirt by adding a small amount of a neutral cleaning agent to the water.

When using mildly acidic, neutral or alkaline degreasing agents, immediately clean the surface with water. The residue-free removal of the degreasing agent prevents chemical damage to the zinc surface.

Removal of white rust from galvanized surfaces

White rust can be removed residue-free by using hard nylon brushes. Wire brushes are not suitable! Dark stains or hues may remain after brushing. These changes gradually adjust to the environment. If necessary, use temporary corrosion protection against recurring white rust formation. Acid-free oils, greases or waxes are suitable for this purpose. Remove small amounts of white rust with Bona wax or acid-free oil (bone oil or sewing machine oil). Use a soft cloth for this.

On-site painting

The surface of the curtain box and frame consists of a primer powder-coating
based on epoxy resin and polyester.

1. Thoroughly clean the surfaces.

2. For the finish, use the following coating:

3. Primer coating with 2-component epoxy etch primer and final coating with suitable commercially available construction paint

4. Primer and final coating with 2-component PUR paint
   Do not use dark paints in direct sunlight. Please observe the BFS information sheet no. 24. Follow the directions of the paint manufacturer! Prepare a sample surface.
   In order to avoid corrosion damage, you must arrange for the final treatment to be carried out within 3 months after fitting.

5. Reattach the seal(s) after the paint has dried.

Powder-coated surfaces

The proper care of coated surfaces requires cleaning in accordance with RAL-GZ 632 or SZFF 61.01 at least once a year. In case of a stronger environmental pollution more frequent cleaning is necessary.

• Only use clean, cold or lukewarm water for cleaning. Only use soft, lint-free towels, cloths or cotton wool for industrial purposes. If necessary, clean off tough-to-remove dirt by adding a small amount of a neutral cleaning agent to the water.

Non-rusting surfaces

ATTENTION

Metal cleaning tools

Cleaning tools containing metal release rusting foreign iron particles onto the stainless steel surface, resulting in corrosion.

• Never use sponges containing metal, steel wool or steel brushes.

Unsuitable cleaning agents

Unsuitable cleaning agents may corrode and damage the stainless steel sur- face.

• Do not use products containing chloride, particularly hydrochloric acid. Do not use bleach or silver polish.

• Clean non-rusting surfaces with a damp towel or shammy.

• For heavier dirt, only use a common (non-ferrous) sponge.

• Remove fingerprints, as well as oily and greasy contamination, with a special cleaning agent, e.g. NIRO-Brillant.

Dismantling and disposal

Dismantling

Standard disassembly procedure:

1. Fully open the curtain. Remove the cladding.
2. Secure the curtain on the barrel against rolling off. Disassemble the curtain barrel using suitable lifting equipment.
3. Disconnect electrical components from the power supply. Disassemble the electrical components.
4. Disassemble the side guide rails.
5. Disassemble the curtain box.

Disposal

Disassemble the curtain into individual parts for proper disposal after dismantling. Dispose of the parts in accordance with local official regulations.
