- Remove hitch wiring plug from factory bumper by depressing spring tabs on plug. Spread tabs approximately ½” and push wiring plug into Thuren bumper. Tabs may need spread more or less to snap into place. Use small screwdriver if necessary to pop tab into place from backside of bumper.
- Some trucks have locating nipples that protrude straight back from the factory bumper brackets that index into the factory bumper. If your truck has these, drive the studs out or cut/grind the nipples off flush with the bumper bracket surface.
Wire Prep
- Cut off Left Hand/drivers side license bulb holder near the socket and strip the wires.
warning
Leave passenger side bulb in the socket, tuck socket up somewhere near spare
tire and secure with zip ties.
Bulb needs to be left operational or truck will likely have a bulb out message
on dash.
Installing Bumper
- Set Thuren bumper onto hitch tube.
- It is intended with this bumper you will trim the fender bottoms off for more off-road clearance. You don’t have to do this, but it will be odd looking if you don’t. The bumper should be sitting by itself in place right now and now is a good time to mark your cut line with masking tape on the fender. Generally, any angle will look great, just shoot for a line right below the bumper down to the fender opening right below any support brackets.
warning
The 2019+ trucks have a factory tailgate drop damper shock mounted inside
the lower bed corner, that protrudes lower than the bumper. Look underneath
inside the corner and you can see the Ball Socket and bracket. DO NOT CUT
ABOVE THIS AREA OR YOU WILL CUT YOUR DAMPER IN HALF!
- Remove bumper, add a few layers of masking tape to protect your paint, and with either a cut off wheel, body saw, or Sawzall with a VERY fine tooth blade, make your cuts.
- Secure inner bumper bracket flanges using the (4) 8mm x 24mm flange head bolts, secure but don’t fully tighten hardware. (some trucks do not have these flanges. if yours is one of them, proceed to next step.
- Use (4) 1/2” x 1.25” flange head bolts with flange nuts to secure outer bumper bracket flange to bumper, secure but don’t fully tighten hardware.
- Drop ⅝” x 1.5” flange head bolts down through bumper and through factory hitch assembly, thread bolts through flag nuts inside bumper.
warning
Check bumper alignment left to right and up and down. There should be
roughly 1 ⅜”- 1 9/16” gap between the bumper and bottom of tailgate with the
gate up.
- If bumper alignment is good, proceed to tighten hardware starting with 1/2” outer bracket flange bolts first, 8mm second and ⅝” bolts last
Torque Specifications
- Torque 1/2” hardware to 100 ft lbs, 8mm hardware to 40 ft lbs and ⅝” hardware to 150 ft lbs.
- Install blanking plugs into open holes the ⅝” bolts dropped through on bumper.
