Safety instructions

DANGER
Mortal danger when fitting the aluminium door During fitting, the door or door frame can fall over and kill persons

  • Secure the door and frame against falling over before and during fitting.

  • Smoke-tight door assemblies serve to protect human beings and their natural livelihoods. According to legal and official regulations, you must maintain building systems and their components in such a way that they do not constitute a danger to public safety and order.

  • You must properly test smoke-tight door assemblies before commissioning them. These smoke-tight door assemblies must then be maintained once a year, or after 50,000 closing cycles at the latest.

  • Benefit from the manufacturer’s expertise by concluding a Hörmann service contract for the inspection, maintenance and repair of your systems.

  •  In accordance with VDE guidelines, only authorised personnel may carry out electrical connections. This applies
    e.g. to:

    • Motor locks,
    • Block locks,
    • Electric door strikes,
    • Door closers with hold-open device,
    • Smoke detectors etc.
  • See the Hörmann building project manual for additional detail planning.

Regulations for smoke-tightness

  • Label smoke-tight doors with ID plates (e.g. smoke-tight door in accordance with DIN 18095/EN 14351-1 in combination with EN 16034). You may only carry out alterations within the scope of permitted possibilities (see the associated certificates of approval from building authorities).
  • Equip smoke-tight doors with door closers as closing devices and with locking cylinders. The locking cylinders must always be fitted. Fit a blind cylinder into doors that should not be locked.
  • Doors with profile cylinder preparation without locking cylinders render the test certificate invalid. The locking cylinder can be omitted for doors without profile cylinder preparation

Approved walls and components

The suitability of the smoke-tight door assembly according to this national test certificate for meeting smoke protection requirements has been verified in conjunction with the following walls / components.

When using the smoke-tight door assembly, observe building law regulations.

  1. According to general national technical proof of usability.

Permissible walls

The required break-in resistance can only be obtained if the adjacent walls meet the requirements according to Table 1

Failproof glazing requirements

The technical regulations for the use of anti-fall safeguard glazing (DIN 18008-4, formerly TRAV) must be complied with.
Only the following fitting variants are permissible:

  • Plug-and-screw fitting
  • Screw fixing
  • Fitting by welding fixing distances (see Fig. 6.1c)

Acoustic-rating requirements

The full volume of structural gaps must be filled with mineral wool or PU foam and sealed on both sides with elastic sealing compounds.

Assembly

Remove the transport safety devices before fitting (see Figure 1.3).

Checking fitting situation

Check the scope of delivery based on the delivery note.
Check the nominal sizes in terms of width and height.

  • Is the wall type suited for the fitting of the door?
  • Is the finished level of the floor known (metre line)?
  • Is the floor level and horizontal (e.g. treads, rising floor, etc.)?
  • Is the opening sense correct?
  • Should the door open to the inside or the outside?
  • Do you have to comply with construction regulations, e.g. within the scope of workplace regulations (threshold design)?

Couplings and extension profiles

  • Coupling A (see Figure 2.3)
  • Coupling with E or F statics profile (see Figure 2.4a)
  • Coupling with E or F statics profile and square tube (see Figure 2.4b)

Preparing the frame for fitting

Depending on the type of fitting (e.g. anchor fitting / fitting by welding) attach the fastenings to the predetermined positions on the frame profile. Note the specified types of fitting (see Figure 4 / Figure 6).

Smoke protection

Smoke protection requires all-round even contact pressure of the door leaves to inner and outer door seals, as well as a properly adjusted bottom seal. (For floor connections, see Figure 13).

Fixing points

(see Figure 6)
Backfill the fixing points in a pressure-resistant manner directly below or above the points. Possible materials include UPVC, hard timber, steel or silicate boards.

NOTE:
You must use the fixing points prepared at the factory!
The fixing points indicated in the instructions are universal.
They may deviate from the fixing points prepared at the factory

    • Gypsum plasterboards (e.g. GKF / GKB)

Integrate at least one all-round flexible gap seal, e.g. silicone or acrylic- based between the door set and building structure.

Observe the processing requirements of the manufacturer when sealing the gaps.

Hanging in the door leaves

CAUTION
Do not trap fingers when hanging in the door leaf.

Request the help of a second person or use an appropriate tool with lever arm for lifting and lowering the door leaf.

Fitting the frame

Fitting must comply with the “Directive for fitting steel frames• by the German industry association for garage doors, doors and frames in Hagen, Germany.

Comply with the implementing regulations of the enclosed instruction for fitting, operation and maintenance of the steel frames.

Note the following:

  • Before opening the packaging, compare the size and finished wall thickness of the frame to the existing wall opening.
  • Check the dimensional accuracy and completeness of the frame prior to fitting.
  • Check whether the frame complies with the planning requirements of the customer. Check the profile design, width and height dimensions, hinge reinforcement etc.
  • Observe the information on the steel frame sticker with regard to the finishing coat.
  • Only fit the sound-absorbing seal after the paint has completely dried.
  • For doors with electric fittings (e.g. electric door strike, latch switching contact), make sure that laying the cables takes place before backfilling.
  • When using block locks and automatic door openers, the electro duct must be concealed. The electro duct is included separately. The required cut-out in the side frame is prepared at the factory.

Floor connections

Retractable bottom seal (see Figure 9/13

  • The retractable bottom seal is fitted at the factory into the door leaf/leaves.
  • Lightly grease the locating profile from the front. Insert the locating profile into the bottom door section from the hinge side. The lift is adjustable. To adjust it, pull the switch latches that protrude from the door leaf on the front side pulled out against the spring pressure away from the door leaf until they can be turned. Turning out increases the lift. Turning in decreases the lift.
  • For smoke protection requirements, adjust the switch latches until the seal is fully flush with the floor when the door is closed. The floor covering must be designed to ensure smoke tightness.
  • When removing the bottom spacer profile, make sure that the retractable bottom seal is evenly in contact with the floor along the entire leaf width.

NOTE:
Door leaves cannot be shortened.

Floor cover partition

Continuous floor coverings must comply at least with class:

  • Cfl-S1 acc. to EN 13501-1
  • B1 acc. to DIN 4102-1.

In case of additional smoke protection requirements, make sure that the levelness and permeability characteristics of the floor covering ensure smoke tightness.

Fittings

Only use accessories (e.g. hinges, locks, closing devices and lever handle sets) in accordance with FSA approval.

Cylinder

You will find the minimum requirements for cylinders in EN 1303.

NOTE:
For doors with burglar protection, observe the table “Minimum requirements for fittings” (section 2.4.2).

Adjusting the fitting

Door leaf adjustment horizontal and vertical, contact pressure setting (see Figure 10).

ECO double locking, adjustment of the mechanical rocker (see Figure 10d)

The mechanical rocker is standard for double-leaf doors with hinged leaf operator. Due to the rocker function, the fixed leaf is always unlocked simultaneously with the opening of the traffic leaf

Lever handles

  • Lever pin 9 mm
  • For doors in escape and rescue routes, ensure that the fitting is approved acc. to DIN EN 179 or DIN EN 1125.

overhead door closer

  • Fitting on the hinge side, standard fitting (see Figure 11a).
  • Fitting on the opposite hinge side , overhead fitting, schematic diagram (see Figure 11b).
  • Fitting instructions of the closer type in the accessory pack.
  • In general, overhead door closers with a certificate of conformity can be fitted. The standards EN 1154 and EN 1155 apply.
  • The selection of the closer is determined by the door leaf weight and the door leaf width.
  • A restrained opening in the overhead door closer is recommended. Only fit the overhead door closer with a suitable mounting plate.
  • The fitting holes for the mounting plates and slide rails are prepared at the factory.
  • The overhead door closer including the mounting plates and slide rails are supplied separately.
  • Observe the “regulations for hold-open devices“ for overhead door closers with locking device (integrated or magnetic).
  • Refer to the included fitting instructions for closer adjustment and maintenance.
  • Set the closer in such a way that the door closes “evenly and smoothly” within 5 ± 2 seconds from a 90º opening angle.

Hörmann HDC 35

Closing force EN size 3-5
Maximum door leaf weight 250 kg
Maximum door leaf width 1250 mm

Hinged door operators

Operator housing

  • To avoid damage during transport, only the mounting plates are fitted at the factory.

  • The fitting holes including steel reinforcement plates for the closer arm are prepared at the factory.

  • The operator housing with closer arm and the required fitting screws is included separately.

  • See the enclosed fitting instructions for fitting and adjustments.

  • During planning, observe the requirements of the statutory accident insurances and workplace directives.
Observe the hospital ordinances, the department store ordinances, etc. Based on these ordinances, safety equipment such as safety sensor strips and control sensors may be required.

  • After the ready-for-use fitting at the application site, you must verify the error-free functioning and proper installation of a hold-open device (hinged leaf operator) by conducting an acceptance test (7.8 Hold-open devices).

Hörmann hinged door operators for single- and doubleleaf doors

| Maximum door leaf width| Maximum door leaf weight
---|---|---
HDO 200| 1,400 mm| 230 kg

Regulations for hold-open devices according to the directives of the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik.

  • After the ready-for-use fitting at the application site, the error-free functioning and proper installation of a holdopen device must be verified by an acceptance test. The manufacturers of release and hold-open devices must inform users of this test.
  • The test must be initiated by the operator.
  • Only manufacturer specialists, authorised specialists or a test body may perform acceptance testing.

The acceptance test must contain the following points at least:

  • The fitted equipment of the hold-open device must match the equipment stated in the approval document.
  • The marking of the hold-open device must match the marking in the approval document.
  • Check the interaction of all equipment based on the approval document. This equipment must be activated by simulating the fire parameters serving as the basis for the functional principle of the detectors. It must also be triggered manually.
  • Check whether the hold-open device closes automatically in case of malfunction, e.g. by removing a detector or in the event of a power failure.
  • After a successful acceptance test, the operator must attach a plate in the direct vicinity of the door. Attach the plate measuring 105 × 52 mm to the wall permanently.
The manufacturer of the hold-open device provides this plate

Hold-open devices

  • Accepted by: company logo as well as month and year of the acceptance.
  • Issue the operator a certificate verifying the success of the acceptance test. The operator is obligated to keep this certificate on file.

Periodic monitoring

  • The operator must keep the hold-open device functional at all times and check it for proper function at least once per month.
  • Unless a shorter period is specified in the approval document, the operator must maintain the system at least once per year. The operator must also test the proper and error-free interaction of all equipment.
  • Only specialists or a specifically trained person may perform these tests and maintenance.
  • Record the scope, result and date of the periodic monitoring. The operator must archive these records (log book, maintenance manual for hold-open devices).

Electric door strikes

A / RS 150, A / RS 250 / ES 50

Standard| A 5002-B| 10.2 – 13.8 V AC/DC 12 – 24 V AC/DC

20.4 – 27.6 V AC/DC 24 – 48 V AC/DC

With signalling contact| A 5003-B

  • Electric door strikes are fitted at the factory. The door leaf contact pressure is adjustable for all models listed above.
To adjust it, loosen the two screws on the door opener and move the bracket.

  • Lower contact pressure can have a negative impact on smoke-tightness.

  • Do not operate electric door strikes with permanent release.

  • The electric door strikes are based on the working current principle. A separate power supply of the electric door strike may be required.

  • Movable components (e.g. doors) may deform due to climate fluctuations or other factors. This inevitably leads to a pre-load or pre-tensioning of the door strike that keeps the door closed.

  • For the version with a DC door strike, this pre-load or pre-tensioning cannot be bridged.

  • The power consumption is higher for the 1-phase current version, however, the pre-load or pre-tension is bridged.

Escape door openers, block locks, motor locks, bolt locks

  • It is recommended to position these locks above the main lock (e.g. at 1500 mm from FFL).
  • Suitability for fitting / use is verified at the factory.
  • Retrofitting on fitted doors often cannot be implemented or only carried out by trained factory fitters.
  • Therefore, include the installation of special locks in your planning phase considerations already.

Note the following:

  • Any electric locking of a door on a rescue route requires an exemption from opposing regulations for each individual case.
  • Prior to commissioning such a system, it must be tested by a specialist.
  • Make sure the electric locking was fitted properly and is functional.
  • A specialist must ensure the operational safety of the system once per year by carrying out testing.

Aluminium profiles care

Cleaning

  1. Clean anodised or powder-coated aluminium profiles with a mild cleaning agent at defined intervals. The cleaning agent must be free of:
    a. benzine and benzol,
    b. diluted hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, or citric acid,
    c. abrasive particles.

  2. Aggressive, caustic and grinding substances such as acids, scouring agents or benzol can damage the highquality anodisation or the powder coating!

Approved modifications to smoketight doors

You may only make modifications to smoke-tight doors after consultation with the manufacturer

Painting steel frames

Factory-applied primer ensures optimum steel frame protection. This priming is an excellent base for further treatment.

  1. Priming must be evenly sanded with non-woven web or with fine grained sand paper without fully abrading the coating.
  2. Remove any abrasive dust. Mend damaged areas potentially incurred during transportation or fitting using a zinc etch primer.
  3. For intermediate coats / finishing coats, use standard coating substances.
  4. The manufacturer guarantees faultless adhesion with the use of standard coating substances and professional application.
  5. Only use synthetic resin paints without aggressive solvents.
    Never use nitro-based paints

ATTENTION
Damage to the priming and sound-absorbing seal
Aggressive solvents or harsh paint materials can damage the priming and / or the sound-absorbing seal.

maintenance

  • To ensure the error-free functioning of the smoke-tight door, the following inspection and maintenance activities must be carried out at least once per year.
  • If the door is used very frequently, you will have to maintain it at least three times a year. Adapt the maintenance intervals to use.

General condition

Visual inspection of the door leaves and door frame for mechanical damage and surface damage

Locks

  • Check whether the fitting screws are tight. Grease the back of the lock latch with Vaseline. Inspect the lock function and latch play. The sealing is no longer guaranteed if the play is too extensive.
  • To correct this, check the condition of the catch and seal. Replace the seal if required.
  • Check the closing adjustment of the door closers.

Profile cylinders

Spray special care products into the profile cylinder lock channel. These care products are available from specialised retailers.

ATTENTION
Oil or graphite on the profile cylinder
Oil or graphite can impair the locking function of the profile cylinder.
Never use oil or graphite for the profile cylinder.

Aluminium screw-on door hinges or steel screw-on guide rollers

Check the door hinge fixings. If necessary, tighten the fitting screws. The door hinges can be adjusted two-way and three-way according to point 7, (see Figure 10) and are maintenance-free.

ATTENTION
Lubricating the door hinges
Lubrication of the door hinges leads to wear of the bearings.
Never lubricate the door hinges.

Closing devices

  1. Check the fastenings to the door leaf and door frame.
  2. Grease all movable parts (e.g. the linkage of overhead door closers.
  3. Comply with the legal control, monitoring and maintenance procedures for door closers with special functions (e.g. locking devices).
  4.  Check and correct the settings according to the enclosed fitting instructions.

Air gaps

  1. A /RS 150
    – Check the edge recess between the frame and leaf (top and side 5 mm ± 1 mm). Check the air gap between the leaf bottom section and finished floor level (11 mm + 1 / – 2).

  2. A /RS 250
    – Check the edge recess in the lock cover area. (5 mm ± 1).

In case of deviations, adjust the door hinges (see point 7, Figure 10).

Seals

Check for damage and wear.

  1. Replace defective seals.
  2. Check the contact of the seals on the door leaf.
  3. If required, adjust the door leaf contact pressure by turning the door hinge bearing bushes.
  4. Smoke protection requires all-round even contact pressure of the door leaves to inner and outer door seals. Smoke protection requires all-round even contact pressure of the threshold gasket to the threshold.
  5. Checking the function of the retractable bottom seal
    – Due to the smoke protection requirements, when the door is closed, the retractable bottom seal must be in contact to the floor across the entire leaf width. If necessary, readjust the retractable bottom seal (floor connections section).

Dismantling and disposal

When dismantling the system, observe the applicable occupational safety rules and regulations.
Have a specialist dismantle the smoke-tight door in the reverse order of these instructions and dispose of it properly.

Spare parts

Only original spare parts are tested and approved.
