Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work to connect an external USB hard drive to a router which doesn't have a USB port?

If you want to connect your hard drive directly to a router, you need something called NAS (Network Attached Storage), it's some specialized hard drive and costs more. Otherwise, you'll have to connect the USB drive to a computer.

Does this adapter support PXE boot?

We use the USB31000SPTB to PXE boot with surface pro 3 machines all the time. There is a strong chance this will work also.

Is this for when you don't have wifi? you plug one end of the cable to your modem and the other end to your pc? or is it replacing the wi-fi?

It is for when you want to connect to your network via a hard-wired ethernet cable instead of via wifi (whether or not you have wifi). You plug the USB connector into one of the USB ports on your computer, and you plug an ethernet cable that is connected to your network into the the other end of the StarTech connector.

Does this work with pad?

No, the US1GC30B does not work in Android or iOS. It's supported in Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Server 2003, 2008 R2, 2012, 2016, 2019, macOS 10.7 to 10.14, and LTS versions of Linux Kernels 2.6.25 to 4.11.x.

will this product work on linux or RHEL6.0 and windows7?

The product is based on hardware. I am not aware that any software is involved m, meaning that it should work with any operating system.

Does this device also power up the phone?

No, the US1GC30A is a USB to Ethernet adapter and will not be able to power a phone. The US1GC30A is currently supported for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Windows Server 2003, 2008 R2, 2012, 2016, 2019, Mac OS X 10.7 to 10.15,, Linux Kernel 2.6.25 to 4.11.x LTS versions only, and Chrome OS.

Will this work with Lenovo Miix 700?

As long as your Lenovo Mix 700 has a USB port it will work, just make sure you use the CD it comes with to install the correct drivers. If the Lenovo mix700 does not take CDs you can download the drives from the StarTech web site.

Does this work with a usb hard drive?

Will it work if i put it in a usb hub?

I have had mixed results. In the end I purchased a powered USB hub with ethernet connectivity from StarTech that I have been pleased with. Keep in mind that every device requires power. The straight USB to Ethernet shouldn't draw too much so by itself it might be OK. Is the USB hub powered? What else is using the hub HDDs can require a lot of power, especially if they don't have their own power source.

Can connect this to my smart tv usb and have wired internet?

No, USB31000S wouldn't work connected to a TV over USB. USB31000S requires drivers to operate, and there isn't a TV-compatible driver available.
