Congratulations on the purchase of your Short Haul, a compact utility bicycle designed for a modern urban lifestyle. The following Guide will help you get started with the Short Haul, while highlighting some of its key features.
Intended Use
- Your Short Haul is designed for individual personal use: riding with both wheels in contact with paved roads or graded and maintained gravel roads. Your Short Haul is not intended for racing, jumps, hops, wheelies, or similar activities which may cause damage to the bicycle and risk injury or death to the rider.
- The warranty will be void if your Short Haul is not used in accordance with the intended usage.
- The warranty is enclosed separately with your Short Haul.
- Only child seats that conform to EN 14344 can be used. Please check with your Tern Dealer and the child seat manufacturer for information concerning compatibility and proper installation.
- Please make sure your Short Haul was purchased and assembled by a Tern authorized dealer. Otherwise, it may invalidate the warranty.
Weight and Loading
To safely use your Short Haul, you must observe the following:
- Maximum gross vehicle weight should not exceed 140 kg (309 lb) Maximum gross vehicle weight is the total weight of the bike, accessories, rider, and cargo.
- Maximum weight of the rider should not exceed 120 kg (265 lb).
- The weight of the Short Haul is 15.5 kg (34 lb)
- The maximum load limit for the Combo Mount is 20 kg (44 lb).
- For accessories, please consult the manual included with each accessory.
- The maximum load limit for the Rear Rack is 50 kg (110 lb).
- The maximum load limit for the kickstand (including bike) is 50 kg (110 lb)
Frist Rider
-
Read all the instruction manuals of the components that are supplied with your Short Haul. If anything is unclear, ask your dealer before riding off.
-
Check the tire pressure and make sure it is within the minimum and maximum values indicated on the sidewalls of the tires.
-
Adjust the saddle height to the preferred position. Make sure the latch is secured tightly.
-
Make sure the chain moves smoothly over the chain pulley, and that the pulley spins freely around its axis.
-
Shift to low gear (largest cassette) and make sure the chain does not rub against the tire.
-
Practice shifting the gears. Remember to never move the shifter while pedaling backwards, or pedal backwards immediately after shifting. This could jam the chain and cause serious damage to the bicycle.
Riding With Cargo
- Cargo should be placed as low as possible and strapped firmly to the bike. Items not securely fastened to the bike may compromise the handling of the bike and endanger others on the road.
- There is a strong relationship between the weight of the rider and the amount of cargo the rider can comfortably balance and ride with. Most riders can comfortably carry 80% of their weight. You should determine if you are comfortable carrying that much weight.
- Practice, practice, practice: Rider size and strength will affect how easily a loaded bicycle can be handled. Always practice in an open, car-free area before carrying a passenger.
Lighting
If you plan to ride at night or when lighting is poor, we recommend equipping
your Short Haul with lights. It will make riding safer for yourself and
others. Excellent front and rear light accessories from Tern are available
from your dealer.
**** The front light beam angle must be adjusted downwards as not to blind
oncoming traffic.
Vertical Parking
- Apply rear brake.
- Pull up on handlebar and walk backwards.
- Make sure all support points touch the ground evenly.
In public areas, hold the bike to prevent it from accidentally falling
over.
Before leaving a vertically parked bike unattended, first strap the bike
to a fixed object to prevent it from falling.
Safe and Happy Riding
Safe Riding
Always wear a cycling helmet that meets the latest certification standards and
is appropriate for the type of riding you do.
Riding With Children
- Check your local regulations: Some countries do not allow the carrying of passengers on the back of a bicycle. Others may require specific accessories to do so legally.
- Make sure that your child always wears an approved bicycle helmet when riding.
- NEVER allow children to climb onto the bicycle by themselves unless an adult is steadying the bike.
- Never park and leave children on the bike unattended. Wriggling kids can upset the balance of the bike and cause it to fall over, causing serious injury.
Proper Equipment Required for Carrying Passengers
- Purpose-Built Rear Seating, Chosen According to the Passenger’s Needs: For Child Seats, use only Child Seats that meet the EN 14344, European Standard for Child’s Seats for Bicycles.
- Foot Supports: The rear passenger’s feet need to lie flat on foot supports during the ride.
- Handholds: Ensure the rear passenger has something to hold during the ride.
- Foot and Leg Protection: Install wheel guards or flat folding panniers folded flat on both sides of the bike.
