DESCRIPTION
The carbon monoxide alarm is used to detect carbon monoxide in housing. It has
a very sensitive electrochemical sensor that has a long life span and is
operationally reliable, insensitive to interference, and compact in format.
The carbon monoxide alarm sets off an alarm at low concentrations of carbon
monoxide and emits alarms for sensor fault, discharged battery and end of life
span.
ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless, lethal gas that forms as a
result of incomplete combustion. Incomplete combustion is primarily a result
of a shortage of air. The greater the shortage of air, the more the carbon
monoxide. Carbon monoxide binds haemoglobin in the blood and prevents it from
carrying oxygen. A sufficiently high concentration of carbon monoxide results
in death as a result of a shortage of oxygen. For this reason health and
consumer safety organisations in many countries warn of the dangers of carbon
monoxide and have given this a high priority.
Possible sources of carbon monoxide The main sources of carbon monoxide in
housing are kitchen and heating installations, for example gas ovens, hot
water heaters, fireplaces, charcoal grills, gas boilers, and motor powered
electric generators. Vehicle engines in adjacent garages can also result in
concentrations of CO in housing. As long as such equipment is working properly
and is used in the right way and in well ventilated areas, little carbon
monoxide will be produced and will quickly be dispersed without putting safety
at risk. In inadequately ventilated rooms, or if equipment is defective, or
for some other reason prevents full combustion, it is possible for high
concentrations of carbon monoxide to develop. Because of poor ventilation the
carbon monoxide fails to disperse. The accumulation of harmful concentrations
takes place instead.
IMPORTANT:
The carbon monoxide alarm warns of the presence of carbon monoxide so that
persons nearby become aware of the situation and can rectify the problem
and/or evacuate the premises. The carbon monoxide alarm does not prevent the
accumulation of carbon monoxide.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
- Mild symptoms: Mild headache, nausea, vomiting, sensation of weakness.
- Moderate symptoms: Headache, drowsiness, confusion, higher pulse rate.
- Severe symptoms: Convulsions, unconscious, heart and respiratory conditions, brain damage, death.
Small children and older persons can be more vulnerable. Pay attention to sensitive persons, the situation can put them in great danger. Seek medical attention immediately, even in the case of mild symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

INSTALLATION
POSITIONING
Install the carbon monoxide alarm in bedrooms and other rooms in the home.
Carbon monoxide alarms can be installed where leakage of CO is suspected. It
is recommended to install a unit on each floor plan to ensure that an alarm
will be heard from all bedrooms. To avoid false alarms and/or damage to the
carbon monoxide alarm, and also to ensure optimum performance, do not install
carbon monoxide alarms in the following places.
- Enclosed areas, for example in kitchen cupboards or behind curtains.
- Behind shielding objects, for example furniture.
- On or near the floor, or in water channels/floor drains.
- Beside doors or windows.
- Near fans or air conditioning systems.
- Near valves or smoke flues.
- Where the temperature is often less than —10°C or higher than 40°C (unless this is necessary).
- Where soot or dust can block the CO sensor.
- Damp areas.
- In kitchen or where cooking takes place.
To think about during installation
- It is not possible to press the carbon monoxide alarm on the mounting plate unless the batteries are correctly inserted. Do not attempt to force the carbon monoxide alarm in place, this can damage it.
- If the alarm is installed in a garage, avoid placing it near the exhaust on the vehicle. Starting an internal combustion engine produces a burst of CO that you will not normally want to trigger the alarm, because it is so short that it is usually not dangerous.
WARNING! a The alarm should be installed by a professional installer, or exactly in accordance with these instructions, to ensure correct and safe functionality.
INSTALLATION
Install the carbon monoxide alarm where it is easy to test and operate it. For
wall installation the carbon monoxide alarm should be placed at least 1.5
metres above the floor, at least 0.3 metres below the ceiling, and 1.5 metres
from corners, side walls and high furniture.
Utforande Procedure
- Hold the mounting plate against the wall in the required position and mark out the holes with a pen. Drill two holes at the markings with a diameter of 6 mm, and depth of 40 mm.
- Put the plugs in the holes. Screw the mounting plate on the wall.
- Start the carbon monoxide alarm and check functionality according to the instructions in the how to use section. If the test shows that the carbon monoxide alarm is working properly, press the alarm over the mounting plate so that it clicks in place.
USE
INFORMATION DISPLAY AND SWITCHING ON
Information | Status | Function |
---|---|---|
Start indicator | The status lights for voltage, fault and alarm flash at the | |
same time and the buzzer goes on. | Indicates that the carbon monoxide alarm |
has the correct voltage. If a status light does not flash, or the buzzer does
not go on, this indicates a fault.
Normal function| The voltage status light flashes at intervals of up to one
minute.| Shows that the carbon monoxide alarm is working.
Warning for discharged battery| The fault status light flashes and audio
prompts are given at intervals of up to one minute. The display shows the
battery symbol D.| Indicates that the battery must be replaced.
Fault warning| The fault status light flashes and audio prompts are given
twice at intervals of up to one minute. The display shows Err when a fault
warning is given.| Indicates that there is a fault on sensor or circuits. The
fault status light flashes at intervals of up to one minute until the fault is
rectified.
Warning for end of life span| The fault status light flashes and audio prompts
are given three times at intervals of up to one minute. The display shows End
when a warning for end of life span is given.| Indicates that the carbon
monoxide alarm has reached the end of its useful life.
Alarm| The alarm status light flashes and audio prompts are given five times.
This is repeated three times at 10-second intervals.| Indicates that a
dangerous CO concentration has
been detected. The alarm switches off automatically
after six minutes when the concentration of CO drops.
Silencing of alarm| When an alarm has tripped, press the TEST button to switch
off the alarm. The alarm is still enabled and the alarm status light flashes,
but the buzzer does not make a noise. The alarm remains silent for up to 10
minutes. Press the TEST button again when the alarm goes off
to reactivate the buzzer.| Alarm status without buzzer. Only if the
concentration of CO is less than 250 ppm.
Warning for low CO concentration| The alarm status light flashes and audio
prompts are given five times at shorter intervals. The interval is no more
than five and at least three minutes.| If the concentration of CO is higher
than 30 ppm for
more than 60 minutes, or if the concentration is higher than 40 ppm for more
than 40 minutes.
If the warning for CO concentration does not
stop before the value is less than 25 ppm.
Warning for low CO concentration differs from alarm.
Test| Press the TEST button. The status lights for voltage, fault and alarm
flash at the same time once. An alarm cycle is carried out if the product is
not working properly. A fault warning is given if there is a malfunction.| For
manual test.
WARNI N G! Warning for low CO concentration A low concentration of CO often occurs on a daily basis. For 5gxample cigarette smoke, candles and gas burners can produce low concentrations of CO. Even if this is not normally dangerous, prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO can be harmful for sensitive groups, such as children, older and ill persons, and in the event of pregnancy. The warning is intended to help such persons to avoid prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO. This does not mean that the situation is dangerous.
Different sound for low CO concentration and alarm
Difference | Warning for low CO concentration | Alarm |
---|---|---|
1 | The alarm status light flashes and audio prompts are given four times at | |
longer intervals. | The alarm status light flashes and audio prompts are given |
five times at shorter intervals.
2| Warning for low CO concentration is given at three to five minute
intervals.| Alarm isgiven three times every 10 seconds.
IMPORTANT:
A warning for low concentration of CO has tripped if 4 audio prompts with
longer intervals are given at three to five minute intervals instead of
continuous alarm signals. Low concentration of CO is not dangerous. The alarm
has tripped if audio prompts are given continuously. This means that the
situation is very dangerous. Evacuate the premises immediately.
Start
- Press the red battery compartment catch and insert three M batteries (LR6) with the correct polarity. (The carbon monoxide alarm starts when the batteries are inserted).
- The buzzer and status lights are working properly if the start indicator is as described in the above section.
NOTE:
- The alarm switches to normal functionality within 20 to 30 seconds after starting.
- The carbon monoxide alarm must be started in clean air without carbon monoxide, otherwise an alarm will be triggered immediately.
Test
Test the alarm at least once a week to check that the sensor, buzzer and
status lights are working properly.
- Press the TEST button. During a test the display shows —.
- The status lights for voltage, fault and alarm flash at the same time once. An alarm cycle is carried out if the product is working properly. A fault warning is given if there is a malfunction.
- Wait at least five seconds before carrying out a new test.
Silencing of alarm
Less than 200 ppm
When an alarm has tripped and the concentration of CO is less than 200 ppm,
press the TEST button to switch off the alarm The alarm is still enabled and
the alarm status light flashes, but the buzzer does not make a noise. The
alarm remains silent for up to 10 minutes. The period of silence is shorter
the higher the concentration of CO. The alarm buzzer is reactivated at the end
of the period. The alarm can be switched off by pressing the TEST button from
one to three seconds. The alarm switches off automatically if the
concentration of CO drops.
Higher then 200 ppm
When an alarm has tripped, press the TEST button for three to five seconds
until the alarm status light flashes without the buzzer making a noise to
switch off the alarm. If the buzzer does not go off when the TEST button is
pressed the concentration of CO can be higher than 200 ppm. If so it will not
be possible to switch off the alarm. When the alarm has gone off, press the
TEST button to reactivate the buzzer.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure that the situation is not dangerous before switching off the alarm.
Fault warnings
Warning for sensor fault
In the event of a fault on a sensor or circuit a fault warning is given within
three minutes. A fault warning is given with an interval of up to one minute
until the fault is rectified. A fault warning can be triggered by a circuit
break or short circuit in the sensor, or by an electronic fault. Volatile gas,
such as ethanol, can affect the sensor and cause temporary faults. Replace the
carbon monoxide alarm if this occurs. Switch off the damaged alarm and leave
it in clean air for 24 hours to reset it to normal functionality. If the alarm
does not work properly after 24 hours this means the damage is permanent Stop
using the carbon monoxide alarm. Do not attempt to repair the carbon monoxide
alarm yourself. Any repairs must be carried out by an authorised service
centre.
WARNING!
Do not use the carbon monoxide alarm if it is damaged or not working
properly. Do not attempt to repair the product yourself. Any repairs must be
carried out by an authorised service centre.
Warning for discharged battery
When the carbon monoxide alarm is working properly the battery charging level
is checked every minute. If the voltage is less than 3.6 V a warning is given
for discharged battery and the battery symbol D is shown on the display. When
an warning for discharged battery is given the batteries can run the product
for about one month, or set off an alarm for several minutes. Replace the
batteries as soon as possible.
WARNING!
Replace the batteries immediately when an audio prompt is given every minute,
or when the battery symbol D shown on the display. Otherwise the carbon
monoxide alarm will not work properly, which can be dangerous.
Available life span and warning for end of life span
Available life span
The carbon monoxide alarm has a life span of 10 years. The countdown starts
when the carbon monoxide alarm is started and after 10 years a warning is
given for end of life span. Replace the alarm when this warning is given.
Warning for end of life span
A warning for end of life span is given with an interval of up to one minute.
The countdown can be interfered if the alarm is switched off frequently. Avoid
switching off the alarm unnecessarily. Check at regular intervals that the
alarm is not too old.
IMPORTANT:
If three rapid audio prompts are given at regular intervals the carbon
monoxide alarm has reached the end of its available life span. Replace the
carbon monoxide alarm immediately.
OTHER GAS CAN AFFECT THE PRODUCT
The following gases can cause a false alarm or damage the carbon monoxide
alarm. Methane, propane, isobutane, ethylene, ethanol, alcohol, isopropanol,
benzene, toluene, ethyl acetate, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide and sulphur
dioxide. Most aerosol sprays, alcohols, paint, thinner, solvents, binders,
hair sprays, aftershave, perfumes, exhaust fumes (cold start) and some
detergents. If the carbon monoxide alarm is exposed to these it can emit a
false alarm and/or be permanently damaged. If there is a smell of gas when the
alarm is triggered it could be a false alarm, because CO is odourless. Put the
carbon monoxide alarm in clean air. If the alarm remains after 30 minutes the
carbon monoxide alarm is contaminated. Switch off the carbon monoxide alarm
and put it in clean air. If the carbon monoxide alarm is not reset to normal
functionality after 24 hours the sensor is :damaged. Stop using the carbon
monoxide alarm.
IF AN ALARM IS TRIGGERED
Take the following steps if an alarm is triggered
- Stop using any combustion units and check that they are extinguished and/or switched off. Quickly open windows and doors, Start ventilation and exhaust air systems.
- Make sure that everyone leaves the premises immediately into the fresh air. Contact emergency service personnel. Do not go into the room before the alarm has stopped and remains deactivated.
- Make sure that everyone showing signs of symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning receives medical attention.
- If an alarm is triggered again within 24 hours take the above steps and allow qualified personnel to investigate the reason for the accumulation of carbon monoxide. If the investigation identifies problems, stop using the equipment concerned immediately. Have qualified personnel check and if necessary repair the equipment. WARNING! Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that result in death. If an alarm is triggered there is carbon monoxide, which can result in death.
MAINTENANCE
Keep the carbon monoxide alarm clean to avoid malfunction and the risk of damage. Clean and test the carbon monoxide alarm every month in accordance with the following instructions.
- Vacuum clean the carbon monoxide alarm to remove dust.
- Wipe the surface of the carbon monoxide alarm with a damp cloth.
- Press the TEST button to test the functionality of the carbon monoxide alarm.
NOTE: Do not use alcohol, petrol, solvent or other strong detergents — they can damage the carbon monoxide alarm.
MAINTENANCE TIPS
- Do not use aerosol sprays, such as perfume, hair spray, insecticide, spray paint near the carbon monoxide alarm.
- Do not paint near the carbon monoxide alarm. If the wall or floor needs painting, remove the carbon monoxide alarm and put it in a sealed plastic bag before painting. Refit the alarm only when all the smell of paint has disappeared.
- Do not block the air openings on the carbon monoxide alarm with stickers.
- If the carbon monoxide alarm drops on the floor, check whether the batteries have fallen out or come loose. If the batteries are intact and in place, or can be put back correctly, test the carbon monoxide alarm with the TEST button.
