SAFETY NOTES
Please note the following safety notes to avoid malfunctions, damage or physical injury:
- Please read this manual carefully and use the device only according to this manual.
- Dispose of used packaging material carefully or store it out of the reach of children. There is a danger of suffocation!
- Persons with limited physical, sensorial or mental abilities are not allowed to use the device, unless they are supervised and briefed for their safety by a qualified person.
- Danger! The measuring probes may cause injuries due to improper use. Always fold the measuring back in after use.
- If the unit is damaged, do not continue using it but have it repaired by a professional.
- Keep the moisture meter out of the reach of children.
- Do not allow liquids of any kind to enter the unit.
- Do not disassemble the unit and do not try to repair it yourself. The unit does not contain any parts serviceable by yourself.
- This moisture meter is a precision measuring instrument and must be handled with care.
- Do not expose the moisture meter to extreme temperatures and store the unit at normal room temperature.
- Do not disassemble, burn, or short-circuit batteries and do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries. Do not mix rechargeable batteries and non-rechargeable batteries and use only batteries of the same type.
- Remove empty batteries from the unit as soon as possible and replace them with new ones. Leaking batteries can cause damage to the electronic circuits.
- Should the unit become damaged do not use it any further and have it repaired by a professional or contact our customer service. Do not disassemble the unit or try repairing it yourself.
- Batteries do not belong in the household garbage.
- For battery disposal please check with your local council.
OPERATION
Product Features
- The moisture meter uses the resistance measuring procedure. The unit can measure the moisture content of wood and building materials. Now you can quickly and conveniently check the moisture content of lumber, firewood, laminates, and rafters, beams, freshly cut wood, veneer, panels, screed, gypsum, plaster and even the moisture content of flower soil.
- With the temperature probe you can also measure the room temperature in°C or °F. With the external probe you can conveniently measure the temperature of surfaces, e.g. heating ducts, radiators, motors etc. With the “HOLD” button the measured value can be frozen on the display.
- The instrument can be calibrated easily (in the moisture measuring mode), which guarantees sustained precise values.
Battery Change
- To activate the unit before the first use or change the batteries, slide the battery compartment cover (8) down in the direction of the arrow.
- Insert two batteries LR03 (AAA) 1.5 V into the battery compartment or replace the present, drained batteries. Observe correct polarity (see the symbols in the battery compartment).
- It is necessary to replace the battery if the battery symbol appears on top of the display and the temperature display (4) flashes.
- Close the battery compartment by pushing the battery compartment cover upwards until it snaps in place with an audible click.
Operation
- Before use the moisture meter can be calibrated. Set the slide switch (9) to “CAL”. Now turn the calibrating wheel (10) until “60 %” is displayed in the upper display. Now the unit is calibrated and ready for use. For best results, this procedure should be conducted whenever possible before taking a measurement.
- After calibration, slide the slide (9) to the “TEST” Function. In a while “00%” will be displayed.
Measuring Moisture
- Unfold the measuring arm (2) in the direction of the arrow.
- Now you can fold it to whatever position is required. There are six locking stops (every 45°).
- Now press the probes 3 – 4 mm deep into the material you intend to measure and read the moisture content (0 – 60%) from the display. Attention: Do not force the probes into the material, the instrument may be damaged. Press the probes into the wood across the direction of the fibers.
- To freeze the value in the display, press “HOLD” (6) while taking a measurement. A padlock symbol is displayed as confirmation.
- Now the probes can be withdrawn from the measured object and the value can be noted.
- To continue taking measurements, press “HOLD” again and the padlock symbol in the display disappears.
- After finishing work, fold down the measuring arm to avoid injury by the sharp probes.
Evaluation of the Measured Moisture Values
-
Moisture values between 0 – 60 % are displayed.
When pressing the probes into the material (e. g. wood), measure in different areas in the material, in which the moisture is not distributed evenly. This way, you get an idea of the moisture content of the entire material. Individual values are hints only. -
Absolutely dry wood (kiln dried) is able to resist electric current much more than damp wood. With this universal law you can indirectly determine the wood moisture content. Please note that these parameters may influence the measurement: type of wood, temperature, bulk density and the moisture distribution.
-
When measuring the moisture content in flower soil, insert the measuring arm about 1 cm deep into the soil in several spots. This gives you a good general idea of the general moisture content of the soil in the pot. Notice: The measured value may differ considerably depending on how much the measured soil is compacted. The highest moisture content is in the centre of the pot. Compare the value with your own impression to determine how wet the soil should be for a specific plant. Now you can use the values to determine the correct moisture content in the future without getting your fingers dirty.
-
A value of 60 % is displayed when the measured material is metal or another material with good electrical continuity. When the probes are immersed in water, a value under 60 % is displayed because only few minerals are solved in the water. Attention: Only the metal probe should be inserted into water, never immerse the whole unit!
-
After each use, clean the probes with a soft cloth.
Hints
- Do not mistake the wood moisture with the water content or equate these values; you have to convert the value. Wood moisture refers to kiln dried weight,
- i. e. absolutely dry wood and the water content refers to the proportion of water amount and damp weight of wood (bulk density of damp wood).
Conversion Table of Water Content and Wood Moisture
Wood Moisture
in %
| 5| 10| 15| 20| 25| 30| 35| 40| 45| 50| 55| 60
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
Relative Wood
Humidity in %
| 5| 11| 18| 25| 33| 43| 54| 67| 82| 100| 122| 150
Freshly cut wood has wood moisture of >50%. This equates to >100 % of relative
wood humidity.
General Values regarding Wood Moisture Balance
Descriptions for wood moisture and their moisture range
Description| Wood Moisture in %
Freshly Cut Wood / Wet| 50 to 150
Saturated Wood| 28 to 32
Half Dry Wood| 20 to 30
Air Dry Wood| 15 to 20
Kiln Dried Wood| < 15
Measuring Temperature
- The unit is set to measuring temperatures by setting the slide switch (9) to “TEST” or “CAL”.
- On the bottom display, the current temperature is displayed. The value is updated every 5 seconds.
- To measure the ambient temperature, avoid touching the temperature measuring probe (7).
- You can use the probe (7) to measure the temperature on a surface (e. g. a component, motor, heating element, radiator, etc.). Hold the probe against the surface of the object you intend to measure. The temperature range is between – 20°C and +70°C (-4°F – 158°F).
- After changing the location, wait for 5 – 10 minutes before taking measurements in order to allow the unit to acclimate.
- With the “°C/°F” button (5) the unit can be switched from Centigrade to
- Fahrenheit and back. The selected system is indicated in the display.
Cleaning
- Only use a damp cloth to clean the device. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives that could damage the surfaces. Do not immerse the device in liquids of any kind.
